Weak Forearcs are a Key Feature of Earth-like Subduction

The basic morphology of oceanic subduction zones has been known since the birth of plate tectonics. Why the Earth has 0km-deep trenches and characteristic island-arc relief remains a persistent enigma. Here we use a suite of 2-D numerical models to explore several potential factors that shape subduction zone bathymetry and gravity.

During the last 50 Ma, the East Asian continent has been a zone of massive continental collision and lithospheric deformation. While the consequences of this for Asian surface and lithospheric deformation have been intensively studied over the past 4 decades, the relationships between lithospheric deformation and underlying asthenospheric flow have been more difficult to constrain.

Objectives:To detail the US multi-institutional experience with the Occlutech©(Occlutech International AB,Helsingborg,Sweden)atrial flow regulator(AFR)in children and adults with acquired or congenital heart ***:The creation of a long-term atrial communication is desirable in several cardiovascular disease phenotypes,most notably pulmonary arterial hypertension,disorders of increased left ventricular filling and increased cavopulmonary pressures in patients with a Fontan type ***:patients were identified for inclusion from the AFR device manufacturer *** was collected using a RedCap database following IRB approval.8 weeks of follow up data was sought for each patient based on available *** was analyzed and summarized using ***:We report the experience of 6 US centers in the implantation of AFR devices in 15 patients,across a wide age range,with different disease phenotypes and a variety of *** was technically successful in all patients and improvement was noted in both clinical and hemodynamic *** were no immediate or intermediate term complications reported.3 patients died remote from *** deaths were not felt to be related to the AFR device or related procedural ***:Compassionate use of the AFR device in children and adults with congenital&acquired heart disease is technically feasible and produces beneficial short term hemodynamic and symptomatic *** uptake of this technique and treatment at specialist centers has the potential to provide significant benefits to a variety of complex patients with currently limited treatment options and indeterminate prognosis.

Objective:There are few studies evaluating the impact of Aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease(AERD)treatment on otologic *** aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of endoscopic sinus surgery(ESS)and aspirin desensitization(AD)on otologic symptoms in subjects with ***:Retrospective chart review of adult patients diagnosed with AERD at our tertiary Care Academic Medical Center-Otorhinolaryngology *** of adult patients diagnosed with AERD who underwent ESS and ASA desensitization at our institution’s AERD Center from 2016 to 2019 were ***-Nasal Outcomes Test 22-item survey(SNOT-22)scores were evaluated for patients at various time points including:pre-surgery,post-surgery/pre-aspirin desensitization,and various times post-desensitization up to>12 *** the SNOT-22,otologic-specific subdomain scores were evaluated at similar time *** on immunomodulatory medications other than corticosteroids were excluded from ***:SNOT-22 scores were analyzed for 121 *** was a significant improvement in overall SNOT scores from pre-surgery(44.62)to post surgery/pre-desensitization(23.34)(ppecific scores also improved after surgery prior to desensitization(3.19-2.04)(p=0.005).Following AD,the improvement in the overall SNOT-22 continued to improve for up to 12 months(ppecific SNOT-22 scores remained stable after surgery and ASA ***:ESS and AD reduce otologic-specific SNOT-22 scores and parallel trends in overall SNOT-22 *** effect of treatment is durable over the course of 12 *** work should aim to correlate otologic SNOT-22 scores with objective otologic data.
