Avian magnetoreception is the capacity for avians to sense the direction of the Earth's magnetic field. Discovered more than forty years ago, it has attracted intensive studies over the years. One promising model for describing this capacity in avians is the widely used reference-and-probe model where radical pairs within the eyes of bird combines to form singlet and triplet quantum *** yield depends on the angle between the Earth's magnetic field and the molecules' axis, hence the relative value of yield of the singlet state or triplet state enables avians to sense the direction. Here we report the experimental demonstration of avian magnetoreception in a nuclear magnetic resonance quantum information processor. It is shown clearly from the experiment that the yield of the singlet state attains maximum when it is normal to the Earth's magnetic field, and the experimental results agree with theory very well.

In order to understand the management of regional vegetation,numerical classification and ordination are widely used to investigate community distribution and vegetation *** particular,two-way indicator-species analysis programs(TWINSPAN)classifies plots and species into different ***-trended correspondence analysis(DCA)and canonical correspondence analysis(CCA)reflects the relationship between community and site *** with Larix olgensis *** is a suitable restoration strategy on post-agricultural fields in the Lesser Khingan *** results of this study show how these plantations develop over time to establish a reliable pathway model by measuring and clarifying the succession ***-eight *** plantations along a 48-year chronosequence of afforestation were investigated with a quadrat sampling *** composition,community structure attributes of diversity,and site conditions were *** were classified by TWINSPAN into five successional stages:immature,juvenile,mid-aged,nearmature and *** were validated by DCA and CCA *** conditions such as soil and litter thickness,soil organic matter,soil density,and pH were *** stages varied in community composition and species population,accompanied by time from afforestation and a gradient of site *** gradient showed changes in vegetation occurrence and diversity coinciding with changes in soil *** study showed that *** plantations had marked predominance in growth and were associated with improved soil fertility and the formation of a stable plant community.

Potato virus Y(PVY)is a non-persistent virus that is transmitted by many aphid species and causes significant damage to potato *** constructed a spatially-explicit model simulating PVY spread in a potato field and used it to investigate possible effects of transmission efficiency,initial inoculum levels,vector behavior,vector abundance,and timing of peak vector activity on PVY incidence at the end of a simulated growing *** PVY incidence in planted seed resulted in lower virus infection at the end of the ***,when populations of efficient PVY vectors were high,significant PVY spread occurred even when initial virus inoculum was ***-colonizing aphids were more important for PVY spread compared to colonizing aphids,particularly at high *** early-season peak in the numbers of noncolonizing aphids resulted in the highest number of infected plants in the end of the season,while mid-and late-season peaks caused relatively little virus *** results highlight the importance of integrating different techniques to prevent the number of PVY-infected plants from exceeding economically acceptable levels instead of trying to control aphids within potato *** management plans should be implemented very early in a growing season.

Microbial communities inhabiting river ecosystems play crucial roles in global biogeochemical cycling and pollution *** variations in local microbial assemblages are important for detailed understanding of community assembly and developing robust biodiversity sampling ***,we intensely analyzed twenty water samples collected from a one-meter spaced transect from the near-shore to the near-center in the Meramec River in eastern Missouri,USA and examined the microbial community composition with 16S rRNA gene amplicon *** microbiomes across the transect exhibited extremely high similarity,with Pearson’s correlation coefficients above 0.9 for all pairwise community composition ***,despite the high similarity,PERMANOVA revealed significant spatial differences between near-shore and nearcenter communities(p=0.001).Sloan’s neutral model simulations revealed that within-transect community composition variation was largely explained by demographic stochasticity(R^(2)=0.89).Despite being primarily explained by neutral processes,LefSe analyses also revealed taxa from ten families of which relative abundances differed directionally from the bank to the river center,indicating an additional role of environmental ***,the local variations within a river transect can have profound impacts on the documentation of alpha ***-accumulation curves indicated that even twenty samples did not fully saturate the sampling effort at the genus level,yet four,six and seven samples were able to capture 80%of the phylum-level,family-level,and genus-level diversity,*** study for the first time reveals hyperlocal variations in riverine microbiomes and their assembly mechanisms,demanding attention to more robust sampling strategies for documenting microbial diversity in riverine systems.

A mathematical model for the catalytic autothermal reforming(ATR)reaction of synthetic crude glycerol to hydrogen in a fixed bed tubular reactor(FBTR)and over an in-house developed metal oxide catalyst is presented in this *** heterogeneous model equations account for a two-phase system of solid catalyst and bulk feed ***,the ATR of crude glycerol reaction scheme and intrinsic kinetic rate model over an active,selective,and stable nickel-based catalyst were integrated in the developed ***,the model was validated using experimental data generated in our labs for the ATR of synthetic crude *** modelling results adequately described the detailed gas product composition and distribution,temperature profiles,and conversion propagation in the axial direction of the fixed bed reactor over a wide range of reaction temperature(773–923 K)and mass-time(12.71–158.23 g cat·min·(mol C)^(-1)).The crude glycerol conversion predicted with the model showing a close resemblance to those obtained experimentally with an average absolute deviation(AAD)of less than 8%.The maximum crude glycerol conversion and hydrogen yield were found to be 92%and 3 mol hydrogen/mol crude glycerol,***,the gas product concentration profile in the reactor was adequately described(90%)accuracy with a hydrogen concentration of 39%(volume).

BACKGROUND: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been reported to induce liver injury. Patterns of the injury usually range from mild elevations of liver enzymes to sometimes severe fulminant hepatic failure. Likewise, naproxen is a propionic acid derivative NSAID that was introduced in 1980 and has been available as an over-the- counter medication since 1994, but has rarely been reported to cause liver injury. METHODS: We treated a 30-year-old woman with jaundice and intractable pruritus that developed shortly after taking naproxen. We reviewed the medical history and liver histopathology of the patient as well as all previously published case reports of naproxen-associated liver toxicity in the English language literature. RESULTS: The liver biochemical profile of the patient revealed a mixed cholestasis and hepatitis pattern. Consecutive liver biopsies demonstrated focal lobular inflammation, hepatocyte drop-out, and a progressive loss of the small interlobular bile ducts (ductopenia). The biopsy performed two years after onset of the disease showed partial recovery of a small number of bile ducts; however, 10 years passed before the biochemical profile returned to near normal. CONCLUSIONS: Naproxen-associated liver toxicity remains a rare entity, but should be considered in any patient presenting with cholestasis shortly after its use. Liver injury is most commonly seen in a mixed pattern characterized by cholestasis and hepatitis. The resulting liver damage may take years to resolve.

Studies across medical disciplines have shown gaps in the care recommended in evidence based guidelines and the care actually delivered. Quality improvement projects using systematic audit and feedback interventions such as quality measures, will become increasingly important tools to address these gaps in care. These gaps are also apparent in the care of patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Multiple organizations, including the American Gastroenterology Association and the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, have developed programs designed to implement quality measures to improve the care of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients. Early results show promise of improving quality, but numerous barriers remain. Gastroenterologists need to be aware of these processes to provide the highest care possible to patients with IBD. We review the existing literature on approaches to quality improvement and their potential application and barriers when applied to IBD care.
