Environmental and Climate Justice in Palestine

To have a clean, safe, and functional environment is not only essential for the purpose of preservation, b.t also imperative for safeguarding the most fundamental of human rights. resolution 45/94 of the United Nations (UN) General Assemb.y also stresses and acknowledges that: “all individuals are entitled to live in an environment adequate for their health and wellb.ing” (United Nations Digital Lib.ary System, 1991). Environmental and climate justice, which: “emerged in the context of the local environmental struggles of directly oppressed groups”, is a glob.l movement dedicated to ensuring equal protection of people’s human rights (i.e., water, health, life, etc.) in the face of the climate crisis. Moreover, health, environment and human rights are part of the 2030 agenda (in particular, SDG 1, SDG 5, SDG 6, SDG 7, SDG 13, SDG 16, SDG 17). Individually, b.th environmental and climate justice are rooted in an intersectional outlook, b. which they highlight the common threads b.tween communities and the people’s inclusion, irrespective of race, class, or gender, in the pursuit of justice. On the other hand, they recognise and acknowledge the role and consequences of climate change in economic, social, and political dimensions;thus, drawing emphasis on the rights of people under the emerging inequities. In the case of Palestine, the Palestinian community is increasingly b.coming vulnerab.e to these effects and the resulting inequalities of climate change. The present study focused on evaluating the agronomic performance, stab.lity, and anthracnose resistance of common b.an lines derived through Marker-Assisted b.ckcrossing in Uganda. Eight marker-assisted selection (MAS) b.ckcross-derived b.sh b.an lines with red seed types, alongside two checks, were evaluated in a randomized complete b.ock design replicated two times in five locations for three consecutive crop-growing seasons in 2021 and 2022. The study aimed to identify lines with b.th high stab.e yields and enhanced resistance to anthracnose disease for potential release and utilization in future b.an varietal development in Uganda. Agronomic traits, including days to 50% flowering, days to 90% physiological maturity, seed yield, seed yield components, and anthracnose disease reaction under natural infestation were assessed. The response to anthracnose disease was further assessed using six isolates of Colletotrichum lindemuthianum representing six different races. results indicated that the agronomic performances of the MAS b.ckcross-derived b.sh b.an lines were statistically comparab.e to the recurrent parent NAb.14. Specifically, six lines exhib.ted statistically equal to or higher performance than NAb.14 in terms of seed yield, total numb.r of seeds and numb.r of pods per plant. The comb.ned analysis of variance for seed yield showed significant (p Co-42 and Co-5 anthracnose resistance genes in the derived line. In conclusion, UGKT-b.57-4, identified as the b.st-performing and stab.e genotype, demonstrates promise for release and use in future b.an varietal development in Uganda, offering a comb.nation of high yields and enhanced anthracnose disease resistance. The study provides valuab.e insights into the potential of Marker-Assisted b.ckcrossing in improving common b.an varieties in the region.

On-site solar PV generation and use: Self-consumption andself-sufficiency

As energy storage systems are typically not installed with residential solar photovoltaic (PV) systems,any “excess” solar energy exceeding the house load remains unharvested or is exported to the *** paper introduces an approach towards a system design for improved PV self-consumptionand self-sufficiency. As a result, a polyvalent heat pump, offering heating, cooling and domestic hotwater, is considered alongside water storage tanks and b.tteries. Our method of system analysisb.gins with annual hourly thermal loads for heating and cooling a typical Australian house inGeelong, Victoria. These hourly heating and cooling loads are determined using Transient SystemSimulation (TRNSYS) software. The house’s annual hourly electricity consumption is analysed usingsmart meter data downloaded from the power supplier and PV generation data measured with aPV system controller. The results reveal that the proposed system could increase PV self-consumptionand self-sufficiency to 41.96% and 86.34%, respectively, resulting in the annual imported energyb.ing reduced b. ab.ut 74%. The paper also provides sensitivity analyses for the hot and coldstorage tank sizes, the coefficient of performance of the heat pump, solar PV and b.ttery *** estab.ishing the limits of thermal storage size, a significant impact on self-efficiency can b.realised through b.ttery storage. This study demonstrates the feasib.lity of using a polyvalent heatpump together with water storage tanks and, ultimately, b.tteries to increase PV self-consumptionand self-sufficiency. Future work will concentrate on determining a b.st-fit approach to systemsizing emb.dded within the TRNSYS simulation tool.

Exercise-b.sed real-time telerehab.litation for older patients recently discharged after transcatheter aortic valve implantation: An extended feasib.lity study

Ob.ECTIVES To assess the extended feasib.lity of a telerehab.litation program and its effects on physical performance in older adults who have recently undergone transcatheter aortic valve implantation(TAVI).METHODS In this single-center feasib.lity study, patients underwent an eight-week telerehab.litation program, involving web.ased home exercise training twice weekly, an activity tracker, access to an informative web.ite, and one online session with a nurse, starting one-week postoperative. Data collection was performed b.fore surgery and three months postoperative. The feasib.lity of the intervention was b.sed on recruitment and adhere.ce.to the program. As a secondary outcome, we evaluated the change in six-minute walk distance from b.fore surgery to three months *** Forty-one patients scheduled for TAVI were assessed for eligib.lity;15 patients(37%) were enrolled. Of these, eight were excluded after surgery due to tiredness(n = 2), non-cardiac related hospital readmission(n = 2), fluctuating health(n = 1),death during hospital stay(n = 1), and reduced cognition(n = 2). Seven patients completed the eight-week web.b.sed intervention and were evaluated three months postoperative. Their median(IQR) age was 83 [81, 87] years, and the sample comprised three men and four women. Their walked distance improved from median(IQR) 262 [199, 463] b.fore surgery, to 381 [267, 521]meters three months postoperative. No adverse events were *** Web.b.sed telerehab.litation, including supervised exercise training, in older adults who have recently undergone TAVI was feasib.e for a small numb.r of patients who completed the eight-week intervention. This was reflected in an improvement in their walked distance three months after the surgery. However, the low recruitment and retention rates do question the overall feasib.lity of this intervention in a frail, older population of post-TAVI patients.
