Baird’s tapir(Tapirus bairdii)is currently endangered throughout its neotropical range with an expected popula--lished in Valle del Silencio within Parque Internacional La Amistad(PILA).Seventy-seven tapir pictures of 15 individuals comprising 25 capture-recapture events were analyzed using mark-recapture *** 100%minimum convex polygon of the sampled area was 5.7 km2 and the effective sampled area using half mean max-imum distances moved by tapirs was 7.16 *** estimated a tapir density of 2.93 individuals/km2 which rep-resents the highest density reported for this *** valleys can represent unique and important habitats for large mammal ***,the extent of isolation of this population,potentially constrained by steep slopes of the cordillera,remains *** genetic and movement studies are required to un-derstand meta-population dynamics and connectivity between lowland and highland areas for Baird’s tapir con-servation in Costa Rica.

Is Repetition of the Contralateral Mammogram of Patients Referred for Unilateral Findings from the Dutch Breast Cancer Screening Necessary?

Objective: To determine the benefit of contralateral mammogram repetition in patients referred from the Dutch breast cancer screening program for unilateral findings. Material and Methods: 395 patients were referred from screening to our institution for unilateral findings between October 2009 and August 2011. In all patients a bilateral mammogram was repeated and analyzed by experienced breast radiologists. Anonymised data concerning the date of registration of the screening mammogram, the referred side (left/right or bilateral), age, screening’s BI-RADS classification, breast density, biopsy results and follow-up were collected. Results: Of the 395 patients referred for a suspicious unilateral finding, a malignancy on the referred breast was confirmed in 144 patients. In addition, a malignancy in the contralateral breast was diagnosed in six patients (1.5%). One of these six contralateral malignancies was occult on screening mammogram, but depicted on institutional mammogram only. The remaining five cases were detected in a blinded retrospective analysis by an experienced radiologist and were considered overlooked by the screening radiologists. During follow-up (mean 27.8 months), no contralateral malignancies were detected. Conclusion: Repetition of the two-view mammogram of the contralateral side in patients referred with a unilateral suspicious finding seems unnecessary.

Laparoscopic hepatectomy reduces postoperative complications and hospital stay in overweight and obese patients

BACKGROUND Laparoscopic liver surgery is currently considered the standard of care for various liver ***,studies focusing on perioperative outcome after laparoscopic hepatectomy(LH)in overweight patients are still sparse and its benefit compared to open hepatectomy(OH)is a matter of *** To analyze postoperative outcomes in overweight[body mass index(BMI)over 25 kg/m²]and obese(BMI over 30 kg/m²)patients undergoing LH and compare postoperative outcome with patients undergoing *** Perioperative data of 68 overweight(BMI over 25 kg/m²)including a subcohort of obese(BMI over 30 kg/m²)patients(n=27)who underwent LH at our institution between 2015 and 2019 were retrospectively analyzed regarding surgical outcome and compared to an equal number of patients undergoing *** The mean BMI was 29.8±4.9 kg/m2 in the LH group and 29.7±3.6 kg/m2 in the OH group with major resections performed in 20.6%(LH)and 26.5%(OH)of cases,*** time(194±88 min vs 275±131 min;P<0.001)as well as intensive care(0.8±0.7 d vs 1.1±0.8 d;P=0.031)and hospital stay(7.3±3.6 d vs 15.7±13.5 d;P<0.001)were significant shorter in the LH ***,overall complications(20.6%vs 45.6%;P=0.005)and major complications(1.5%vs 14.7%,P=0.002)were observed less frequently after *** additional investigation analyzing the subgroup of obese patients who underwent LH(n=27)and OH(n=29)showed a shorter operative time(194±81 min vs 260±137 min;P=0.009)and a reduced length of hospitalization(7.7±4.3 d vs 17.2±17 d;P<0.001)but no difference in postoperative complications or overall *** LH is safe and cost-effective in overweight and obese ***,LH is significantly associated with fewer postoperative complications and reduced hospital stay compared to OH in these patients.
