Tree diversity and nectar composition affect arthropod visitors on extrafloral nectaries in a diversity experiment

Aims Plants with extrafloral nectaries(EFNs)are common in tropical and subtropical habitats and,despite many other arthropods also forage for EFN,most studies solely focused on the defense mutualisms between EFN plants and *** study aims at a quantitative assessment of the entire arthropod community that visits EFN trees to compare visitor communities between different tree species to disentangle the mechanisms that may drive EFN visitor community *** also test for tree diversity effects on EFN visitors,as it is unknown if local tree species richness relates to the abundance and species richness of arthropods foraging for *** We sampled EFN-visiting arthropods in the experimental tree species richness gradient of the BEF-China Experiment,the currently largest forest diversity experiment in the world,and tested if tree species richness affects EFN visitors and if visitor community composition differs between EFN tree *** a second step,we analyzed the EFN of Ailanthus altissima and Triadica cochinchinensis,the two EFN tree species with highest visitor abundance,for sugars and amino acids(AA)to test if tree species-specific differences in nectar chemistry translate to differing visitor ***,we conducted a choice experiment using different artificial nectar solutions to test if nectar quality affects foraging decisions of ants,the most frequent EFN visitors in our study *** Findings EFN trees in young successional forests in subtropical South-East China are visited by a diverse assemblage of arthropods including ants,beetles,flies,and *** ants accounted for about 75%of all individuals,non-ant visitors were by far more species *** abundance and species richness declined with increasing tree species richness,suggesting a resource dilution effect,because plots with more tree species had proportionally less EFN tree individuals and thus lower nectar *** altissima and ***

Assessment of oxidative stress in chronic pancreatitis patients

AIM: To assess the levels of antioxidant capacity and oxidative damage in blood of chronic pancreatitis (CP) patients in comparison with those in healthy control sub- jects, by using several different analytical techniques. METHODS: Thirty-five CP patients and 35 healthy con- trol subjects were investigated prospectively with re- spect to plasma levels of thiols, ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP, i.e. antioxidant capacity), levels of protein carbonyls and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS). Additionally, we evaluated the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in whole blood. RESULTS: The antioxidative thiols including cysteine, cysteinylglycine and glutathione were significantly lower in CP patients. In addition, the non-enzymatic antioxi- dant capacity was significantly lower in CP patients, which correlated with the amount of oxidative protein (protein carbonyls) and the extent of lipid damage (TBARS), both were significantly higher in CP patients. The ROS production in whole blood after stimulation with phorbol 12-myritate 13-acetaat, demonstrated a strong tendency to produce more ROS in CP patients. CONCLUSION: Oxidative stress may contribute to the pathogenesis of chronic pancreatitis by decreasing anti- oxidant capacity and increasing oxidative damage in CP patients may be a rationale for intervention with antioxi- dant therapy.

Optimizing Growth Conditions for Digoxin Production in Digitalis lanata Ehrh

Objective: Digoxin is a therapeutic cardenolide widely used to treat various heart conditions such as atrial flutter, atrial fibrillation and heart failure in both Western as well as Chinese medicine. Digoxin is extracted from cultivated Digitalis lanata Ehrh. plants, known as Mao Hua Yang Di Huang in Chinese medicine. This manuscript presents two studies that were conducted to optimize the cultivation conditions for digoxin production in the TCM Mao Hua Yan Di Huang in a greenhouse under GAP ***: Two experiments were designed in which 4 growth conditions were compared. Levels of digoxin, gitoxin, digitoxin, α-acetyldigoxin, β-acetyl-digoxin were measured using HPLC-UV and compared between the ***: Normal soil, no CO_2 enrichment combined with a cold shock was found to be the optimal condition for producing digoxin in the first experiment. Gitoxin content was significantly lower in plants grown in this condition. Mechanical stress as well as the time of harvesting showed no statistically significant differences in the production of cardenolides. In the second experiment the optimal condition was found to be a combination of cold nights, sun screen, fertilizer use and no milled ***: This study shows that digoxin production can be increased by controlling the growth conditions of D. lanata Ehrh. The effect of cold was important in both experiments for improving digoxin production. Cultivating Chinese herbal medicines in optimized greenhouse conditions might be an economically attractive alternative to regular open air cultivation.

AIM： TO determine whether -1195 A→G and/or -765 G→C polymorphisms in Cyclooxygenase-2 CCOX-2） may have a risk modifying effect on the development of esophageal carcinoma in a Dutch Caucasian population. METHODS： Two study groups were recruited, 252 patients with esophageal carcinoma and 240 healthy controls, matched for race, age, gender and recruiting area. DNA was isolated from whole blood and used for genotyping. PCR products were digested with restriction enzymes and products were analyzed by agarose gel electrophoresis. Odds ratios （OR） and 95% confidence intervals （CI） were estimated. RESULTS： The distribution of the -1195A→G polymorphism was significantly different in esophageal cancer patients compared to controls. The -1195 GG genotype resulted in a higher risk of developing esophageal adenocarcinoma （OR = 3.85, 95% CI： 1.45-10.3） compared with the -1195AA genotype as a reference. The -765 G→C genotype distribution was not different between the two groups. The GG/ GG haplotype was present more often in esophageal adenocarcinoma patients than in controls （OR = 3.45, 95% CI： 1.24-9.58; with AG/AG as a reference）. The same trends were observed in patients with squamous cell carcinomas, however, the results did not reach statistical significance. CONCLUSION： Presence of the COX-2 -1195 GG genotype and of the GG/GG haplotype may result in a higher risk of developing esophageal carcinoma.

Dear Editor,Next-generation sequencing revealed that the majority of the human genome is transcribed but has no coding *** is estimated that.30000 long noncoding RNAs(lncRNAs)are expressed in humans,but their functions are largely unknown(Suckau et al.,2009;Rinn and Chang,2012;Poller et al.,2013).Consideration of noncoding genomic elements in pathogenetic studies is warranted and enabled by technological advances allowing comprehensive transcriptome mapping of protein-coding genes as well as small and long ncRNAs.
