Due to the coarse scale of soil moisture products retrieved from passive microwave observations(SMPMW),several downscaling methods have been developed to enable regional scale ***,it can be challenging for users to access final data products and algorithms,as well as managing different data sources and formats,various data processing methods,and the complexity of the workflows from raw data to information ***,the Google Earth Engine(GEE),which as of late offers SMPMW,is used to implement a workflow for retrieving 1 km SM at a depth of 0-5 cm using MODIS optical/thermal measurements,the SM_(PMW)coarse scale product,and a random forest *** proposed method was implemented on the African continent to estimate weekly SM *** results of this study were evaluated against in-situ measurements of three validation ***,in comparison to the original SM_(PMW)product,which was limited by a spatial resolution of only 9 km,this method is able to estimate SM at 1 km spatial resolution with acceptable accuracy(an average correlation coefficient of 0.64 and a ubRMSD of 0.069 m^(3)/m^(3)).The results show that the proposed method in GEE provides a precise estimation of SM with a higher spatial resolution across the entire continent.

The early fixation of bone screws after surgical implantation still remains a challenge in the field of traumatology. Whilst hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings are known to enhance the fixation of implants;their removal at a later time-point may be problematic. An HA coating has been developed to demonstrate that both implant fixation and safe removal are feasible in the same design. Accordingly the aim of this study was to compare the In-Vivo performance of thin biomimetic HA coated titanium screws to uncoated counterparts used as control after bilateral implantation in the femoral condyle of 36 New Zealand White Rabbits. The screws were analysed macroscopically, by histology, micro-CT and biomechanically at both two and six weeks post-implantation. The HA coated screws demonstrated excellent biocompatibility. At two weeks the HA coated screws demonstrated a significant increase in removal torque values as well as a strong trend towards higher pull-out forces. In addition histology confirmed a higher degree of osseointegration and direct bone to implant contact. At six weeks no difference in pull-out force and removal torque could be detected. SEM images confirmed the absence of any residual HA coating indicating a fast coating degradation In-Vivo. The low level of removal torque after full osseointegration at 6 weeks supports the feasibility of safe and easy removal of the implant. The HA coating under study appears to offer a unique characteristic of enhanced fixation with a minimal increase in removal torque after full osseointegration. This may be of value in clinical applications where it is necessary to assure both screw fixation and later removal.

Probabilistic forecasting is becoming increasingly important for a wide range of applications,especially for en-ergy systems such as forecasting wind power production.A need for proper evaluation of probabilistic forecasts follows naturally with this,because evaluation is the key to improving the *** plenty of excellent reviews and research papers on probabilistic forecast evaluation already exist,we find that there is a need for an introduction with some practical *** particular,many forecast scenarios in energy systems are inher-ently multivariate,and while univariate evaluation methods are well understood and documented,only limited and scattered work has been done on their multivariate *** paper therefore contains a review of a selected set of probabilistic forecast evaluation methods,primarily scoring rules,as well as practical sections that explain how these methods can be calculated and *** three case studies featuring simple autore-gressive models,stochastic differential equations and real wind power data,we implement,apply and discuss the logarithmic score,the continuous ranked probability score and the variogram score for forecasting problems of varying ***,the advantages and disadvantages of the three scoring rules are highlighted,and this provides a significant step towards deciding on an evaluation method for a given multivariate forecast scenario including forecast scenarios relevant for energy systems.

Sweden has witnessed an increase in the rates of sexual crimes including *** of who the offenders of these crimes are is therefore of importance for *** aimed to study characteristics of individuals convicted of rape,aggravated rape,attempted rape or attempted aggravated rape(abbreviated rape+),against a woman≥18years of age,in *** using information from the Swedish Crime Register,offenders between 15 and 60years old convicted of rapeþbetween 2000 and 2015 were *** on substance use disorders,previous criminality and psychiatric disorders were retrieved from Swedish population-based registers,and Latent Class Analysis(LCA)was used to identify classes of rapeþoffenders.A total of 3039 offenders were included in the analysis.A major-ity of them were immigrants(n=1800;59.2%)of which a majority(n=1451;47.7%)were born outside of *** LCA identified two classes:Class A-low offending class(LOC),and Class B—high offending class(HOC).While offenders in the LOC had low rates of previous criminality,psychiatric disorders and substance use disorders,those included in the HOC had high rates of previous criminality,psychiatric disorders and substance use *** HOC may be composed by more“traditional”criminals probably known by the police,the LOC may represent individuals not previously known by the *** two separated classes,as well as our finding in regard to a majority of the offenders being immi-grants,warrants further studies that take into account the contextual characteristics among these offenders.

The objective of disaster scenes is to share location-based risk information to a large audience in an effective and intuitive ***,current studies on three-dimensional(3D)representation for dam-break floods have the following limitations:(1)they are lacking a reasonable logic to organize the whole process of dam-break floods,(2)they present information in a way that cannot be easily understood by *** storytelling helps to create exciting experiences and to explain complex relationships of geospatial *** article proposes a three-dimensional virtual representation method for the whole process of dam-break floods from a geospatial storytelling *** creation of a storyline and a storytelling-oriented representation of dam-break floods are discussed in ***,a prototype system based on WebGL is developed to conduct an experiment *** results of the experiment show that the proposed method can effectively support 3D representation of the spatiotemporal process of dam-break ***,the statistical results indicate that the storytelling is useful for assisting participants in understanding the occurrence and development of dam-break floods,and is applicable to the popularization of disaster science for the general public.

In this paper,?the motion of textiles through a waste water pump is studied by aid of vision technologies. The steel volute of a commercial pump is replaced with a similar volute made in acrylic glass, which allows recording the motion of textiles inside the pump. Recordings are made at four different operating points to investigate the influence of rotational speed of the impeller and flow?rate on the passage of textiles through the pump. The experiments show that the textiles flow rapidly through the pump when the pump is operated near the best efficient point for both high and low impeller speed. The textiles tend to stay inside the pump when the pump is operated at part load for both low and high impeller speed.?At?low impeller speed,?the textiles often stick to the tongue in the pump casing. At higher impeller speed,?the textiles flow multiple rounds in the volute. For fail-safe operation,?it is recommended not to operate waste water pumps far away from the best efficiency point.

Cultural landscapes all over the world harbor species communities that are taxonomically and functionally *** Eastern Europe,but also in many other regions of the world,the conservation of this farmland biodiversity is threatened by land use intensification and *** order to counteract the negative effects of land use change in such landscapes,a thorough understanding of the functional relationships between species and their environment is *** this study,we investigated the relationship of functional traits of butterfly and bird communities and environmental conditions in 120 sites in traditional farmlands of southern Transylvania,***,we compared taxonomic diversity(i.e.,Shannon diversity)with functional diversity(i.e.,functional dispersion),and second,we linked species traits to environmental variables by performing RLQ *** traits indicating reproduction,movement,and feeding behavior related with environmental variables describing heterogeneity,amount of woody vegetation,and topography at three different spatial *** found positive relationships between taxonomic and functional diversity,as well as strong linkages between species traits and environmental conditions for both ***,butterfly composition was most strongly influenced by land use type and life-history *** composition was most strongly related to the amount of woody vegetation and nesting and foraging *** conclude that maintaining the typical features of traditional farming landscapes,especially a small-scale heterogeneity in arable land and gradients of woody vegetation cover,would be desirable in order to sustain a high functional diversity in southern Transylvania in the future.

AIM To investigate viability assessment of segmental small bowel ischemia/reperfusion in a porcine *** In 15 pigs, five or six 30-cm segments of jejunum were simultaneously made ischemic by clamping the mesenteric arteries and veins for 1 to 16 h. Reperfusion was initiated after different intervals of ischemia(1-8 h) and subsequently monitored for 5-15 h. The intestinal segments were regularly photographed and assessed visually and by palpation. Intraluminal lactate and glycerol concentrations were measured by microdialysis, and samples were collected for light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The histological changes were described and *** Using light microscopy, the jejunum was considered as viable until 6 h of ischemia, while with transmission electron microscopy the ischemic muscularis propria was considered viable until 5 h of ischemia. However, following ≥ 1 h of reperfusion, only segments that had been ischemic for ≤ 3 h appeared viable, suggesting a possible upper limit for viability in the porcine mesenteric occlusion model. Although intraluminal microdialysis allowed us to closely monitor the onset and duration of ischemia and the onset of reperfusion, we were unable to find sufficient level of association between tissue viability and metabolic markers to conclude that microdialysis is clinically relevant for viability assessment. Evaluation of color and motility appears to be poor indicators of intestinal *** Three hours of total ischemia of the small bowel followed by reperfusion appears to be the upper limit for viability in this porcine mesenteric ischemia model.
