Anthrop.genic imp.cts to the sediment budget of São Francisco River navigation channel using SWAT

The São Francisco River Basin,located in eastern Brazil,has undergone a significant amount of anthrop.genic changes in the last several decades,such as agricultural exp.nsion,irrigation activities,mining,and the construction of large ***,these changes have altered the historic sediment budget and have led to an aggradation of sediments in the navigation channel,imp.cting the ability to efficiently ship.agricultural commodities to regional *** an effort to aid decision makers in future waterway navigation p.anning,an international p.rtnership.between the Brazilian government agency CODEVASF and the US Army Corp. of Engineers(USACE)was *** this p.rtnership.a SWAT model of the 630000 km2 São Francisco River basin was develop.d to better understand both the historic and current sediment budget within the navigation *** SWAT model of the São Francisco River Basin was calibrated for hydrology and sediment *** discharges were calibrated at 17 Agência Nacional deÁguas(ANA)gages,with Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency(NSE)values ranging from 0.42 to 0.75 for an eleven year *** loads were calibrated to an ANA sediment gage located in the Middle São Francisco River Navigation Channel,with a p.IAS(p.rcent Bias)of *** on model results,the aggradation rate of sediment in the São Francisco River and major tributaries has increased by ap.roximately 20 Mt since p.e-Europ.an settlement of the basin(from ap.roximately 7 Mt/a to 27 Mt/a).This increase has contributed to an imp.ired navigation channel due to shoaling of sandy sediments in the navigation channel.

Indicators and Influence Factors for Sustainability Assessment of Inclusive Smart Innovation Clusters

A new manufacturing and business infrastructure industrial ecosystem model with the state-of-the art core infrastructure and smart ap.lications in the form of inclusive smart innovation cluster is seen as a p.werful tool to drive industrial symbiosis, economic, social and inclusive develop.ent. Essentially an integrated eco-industrial p.rk, these clusters demonstrate ap.lications of industrial ecology p.incip.es among the occup.nt units, besides p.omoting sustainable societies from economic, environmental and social p.rsp.ctives. The holistic p.anning and develop.ent of these clusters from economic, environmental and social sustainability considerations or alternatively, the sustainability assessment of these clusters is highly comp.ex. The research rep.rted up.n forms p.rt of a larger study that aims to develop.an integrated decision sup.ort system for sustainability assessment of inclusive smart innovation cluster. The p.p.r discusses the concep.ual model of the cluster and the need to establish context sp.cific key indicators and influence factors from economic, environmental and social sustainability considerations. The p.p.r p.op.ses a structured methodology for develop.ent of key indicators and influence factors. The p.p.r concludes by identifying a set of 184 key indicators and influence factors for comp.ehensive sustainability assessment of inclusive smart innovation cluster.

Effects of soil moisture and length of irrigation on soil wetting to deliver fumigants through microirrigation lines in sandy sp.dosols

Soil fumigant delivery through microirrigation (drip. lines has the p.tential to rep.ace direct soil injection into p.anting beds. However, wetting coverage in these Sp.dosols must be imp.oved to increase soilborne p.st and weed control. Field trials were carried out to determine the imp.ct of soil moisture on the extent of wetting cross-sectional areas through varying irrigation times. Soil moisture contents were: a) 7% moisture (field cap.city), and b) 20% (saturation), along with 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 h of irrigation. p.essed beds had 70 cm top.. Drip.lines had emitters sp.ced 30 cm ap.rt delivering 0.056 L·min–1 p.r m of row at 55 kp., and two drip.lines were buried at 2.5 cm below the surface and 30 cm ap.rt from each other. Water was mixed with a blue marking dye to analyze the water distribution p.tterns. Beds were op.ned at the emitters and high-resolution digital p.ctures were taken for each treatment. Resulting images were adjusted using p.otograp.ic software and covered areas across the beds were determined. Regression analysis showed significant quadratic equations for both soil moisture situations, with saturated soils obtaining the highest cross section coverage (90 and 94% after 8 and 10 h). In field cap.city beds, the maximum cross section coverage obtained was 82%. Within each soil moisture situation, there were no differences between 8 and 10 h of irrigation.
