Glucocorticoids have been used in the treatment of prostate cancer to slow disease progression, improve pain control and offset side effects of chemo- and hormonal therapy. however, they may also have the potential to drive prostate cancer growth via mutated androgen receptors or glucocorticoid receptors （GRs）. In this review we examine historical and contemporary use of glucocorticoids in the treatment of prostate cancer, review potential mechanisms by which they may inhibit or drive prostate cancer growth, and describe potential means of defining their contribution to the biology of prostate cancer.

AIM： To study a cohort of patients undergoing 48 h Bravo ph testing receiving deep sedation with propofol. METhODS： We retrospectively reviewed the charts of 197 patients （81 male, 116 female） who underwent Bravo esophageal ph monitoring from July 2003 to January 2008. All patients underwent Bravo ph probe placement via esophagogastroduodenoscopy （EGD） and received propofol for sedation. Patients on a proton pump inhibitor （89 patients） were excluded. Acid reflux variables measured included the total, upright, and supine fractions of time at ph 〈 4 and DeMeester score, and were compared between day I and day 2. RESULTS： Of the 108 patients that were included in the study, the most common indication for Bravo ph monitoring was heartburn, with chest pain being the second most common. A signed rank test revealed no statistically significant difference between day I and day 2 reflux episodes. CONCLUSION： Patients who received propofol for sedation for EGD with Bravo ph capsule placement did not experience any significant difference in reflux episodes from day 1 to day 2.

A comparison between conventional pyrolysis and a novel developed low-temperature microwave-assisted pyrolysis methodology has been performed for the valorisation of a range of biomass feedstocks including waste residues. Microwave pyrolysis was found to efficiently deliver comparable evolution of bio-gases in the system as compared with conventional pyrolysis at significantly reduced temperatures （120-180 ℃vs 250-400 ℃）. The gas obtained from microwave-assisted pyrolysis was found to contain CO2, Ch4 and CO as major components as well

Background Carotid endarterectomy(CEA)results in fewer perioperative strokes,but more myocardial infarctions(MI)than carotid artery stenting(CAS).We explored a combined modelling approach that stratifies patients by baseline stroke and *** Baseline registry-based risk models for perioperative stroke and MI were identified via literature *** then selected treatment risk models in the Carotid Revascularisation Stenting versus Endarterectomy(CREST)trial by serially adding covariates(baseline risk,treatment(CEA vs CAS),treatment-risk interaction and age-treatment interaction terms).Treatment risk models were externally validated using data from the Society for Vascular Surgery(SVS)Vascular Quality Initiative(VQI)CEA and carotid stenting registries and treatment models were recalibrated to the SVS-VQI *** net benefit was estimated by summing the predicted stroke and MI risk differences with CEA versus *** Perioperative treatment models had moderate predictiveness(c-statistic 0.69 for stroke and 0.68 for MI)and reasonable calibration across the risk spectrum for both stroke and MI within *** external validation in SVS-VQI,predictiveness was substantially reduced(c-statistic 0.61 for stroke and 0.54 for MI)and models substantially overpredicted *** patients(86.7%)were predicted to have net benefit from CEA in CREST(97.0%of symptomatic patients vs 75%of asymptomatic patients).Discussion A combined modelling approach that separates risk elements has potential to inform optimal ***,our current approach is not ready for clinical *** data support guidelines that suggest that CEA should be the preferred revascularisation modality in most patients with symptomatic carotid stenosis.

Aerosol insecticides may provide an alternative to fumigants for control of the Indianmeal moth, Plodia interpunctella （hübner）, the Indianmeal moth, a major insect pest of stored processed food. In this study, eggs and larvae （5th instars） ofP. interpunctella were exposed to aerosol applications of the pyrethroid esfenvalerate and insect growth regulator methoprene, alone and in combination, in open and obstructed positions inside small sheds. When larvae were exposed to methoprene alone, adult emergence from those exposed larvae was 7.1% ± 1.5%. In contrast, adult emergence was 92.5% ± 3.5% when larvae were exposed to esfenvalerate alone. When eggs were exposed to methoprene, adult emergence of those exposed eggs was approximately 75%; however, when eggs were exposed to esfenvalerate, adult emergence was approximately 35%. In the combination treatment of methoprene plus esfenvalerate at their respective label rates, adult emergence following larval exposure was 0.91% ±0.61% compared to 16.3% ± 9.6% when eggs were exposed. Based on our results, methoprene alone is highly effective in reducing adult emergence after larval exposure. however, it is not as effective on eggs as esfenvalerate. A combination treatment of esfenvalerate plus methoprene could be used to control eggs and the wandering-phase larval stages ofP. interpunctella. An economic risk analysis also supports a strategy of combining methoprene and esfenvalerate.

The degradation of micropollutants in water via ultraviolet（UV）-based advanced oxidation processes（AOPs） is strongly dependent on the water matrix. Various reactive radicals（RRs） formed in UV-AOPs have different reaction selectivities toward water matrices and degradation efficiencies for target micropollutants. hence, process selection and optimization are crucial. This study developed a facilitated prediction method for the photon fluence-based rate constant for micropollutant degradation(k'p,MP) in various UV-AOPs by combining model simulation with portable measurement. Portable methods for measuring the scavenging capacities of the principal RRs（RRSCs） involved in UV-AOPs(i.e., hO·, SO4·-, and Cl·) using a mini-fluidic photoreaction system were proposed. The simulation models consisted of photochemical, quantitative structure–activity relationship, and radical concentration steady-state approximation models. The RRSCs were determined in eight test waters, and a higher RRSC was found to be associated with a more complex water matrix. Then, by taking sulfamethazine,caffeine, and carbamazepine as model micropollutants, the k'p,MPvalues in various UV-AOPs were predicted and further verified experimentally. A lower k'p,MPwas found to be associated with a higher RRSC for a stronger RR competition; for example, k'p,MPvalues of 130.9 and 332.5 ***–1, respectively, were obtained for carbamazepine degradation by UV/h2O2in the raw water(RRSC = 9.47 × 10～4s-1) and sand-filtered effluent(RRSC = 2.87 × 10～4s-1) of a drinking water treatment plant. The developed method facilitates process selection and optimization for UV-AOPs, which is essential for increasing the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of water treatment.

Biomass-derived N-doped carbon(BNC)is an important environmental material and widely used in the fields of water purification and soil ***,the toxicant in the commonly used synthesis process of BNC materials have been largely ***,we firstly report the presence of a highly toxic by-product(KCN)in the activation process of BNC materials consequential of the carbothermal reduction *** this carbothermal reduction reaction also regulates the N-doping and pore development of BNC materials,the KCN content directly relates with the properties of BNC material ***,a high KCN content(-611 mg)can occur in the production process of per g BNC material with high specific surface area(-3600 m^2/g).Because the application performance of BNC material is determined by the surface area and available N doping,therefore,production of a BNC material with high performance entails high ***,this study proves a completely new risk recognition on a familiar synthesis process of biomass-based ***,strict protective device should be taken in fabrication process of biomass-derived carbon material.

The methylation of alcohols is of great importance since a broad number of bioactive and pharmaceutical alcohols contain methyl ***,a highly efficientβ-methylation of primary and secondary alcohols with methanol has been achieved by using bis-N-heterocyclic carbene iridium(bis-NhC-Ir)*** substrate scope and up to quantitative yields were achieved at low catalyst loadings with only hydrogen and water as *** protocol was readily extended to theβ-alkylation of alcohols with several primary *** experiments,along with DFT calculations and crystallographic studies,revealed that the ligand effect is critical to their excellent catalytic performance,shedding light on more challenging Guerbet reactions with simple alcohols.

Acute and chronic tendon injuries(***) are common,yet current treatments cannot restore normal structure and function to injured *** problem mainly stems from our incomplete understanding of tendon cell properties and responses to biomechanical and biochemical environments surrounding the ***,significant progress has been made in recent years on two *** first is the new discovery that tendons contain a population of multi-potent tendon stem cells(TSCs).The second is the wide application of platelet-rich plasma(PRP) in orthopaedics and sports medicine to treat injured *** mini-review aims to discuss the studies on TSCs,with a focus on their differential properties with respect to tenocytes and their differential mechano-responses when subjected to small and large mechanical loading *** light of the critical importance of the safety and efficacy of PRP treatment in clinic,basic scientific research related to PRP effects on TSCs,particularly on their differentiation,is also ***,the urgent need for rigorous basic scientific research to justify PRP applications in clinic settings is proposed.
