The Mysterious Mid-Carnian “Wet Intermezzo” global Event

Approximately 230 million years ago in the middle of the Carnian stage of the Upper Triassic, the sedimentary records in different regional basins display dramatic changes. Tropical carbonate platforms abruptly ended, and engorged river systems left widespread sand-rich layers across inland basins and coastal regions. This pulse lasted less than a million years in some basins, but constituted a permanent shift in others. Following this event, the Late Carnian has the earliest record of significant dinosaurs on land and the emergence of the calcareous nannoplankton in the oceans that now govern Earth＇s carbon cycle. This ＂most distinctive climate change within the Tri- assic＂ has been interpreted by some geoscientists as a global disruption of the Earth＇s land-ocean-biological system. The eruption of the Wrangellia large igneous province may have been the trigger for a sudden carbon-dioxide-induced warming and associated increased rainfall in some of these regions. Indeed, some workers have proposed that this ＂wet intermezzo＂ warming event is a useful analog to aid in predicting the effects of our future greenhouse on land ecosystems and ocean chemistry. However, the understanding of the onset, duration, global impacts and relatively rapid termination of this postulated warming pulse has been hindered by lack of a global dataset with inter-calibrated terrestrial and marine biostratigraphy, precise radio-isotopic ages, stable isotope records of temperature and the carbon system, and cycle-calibrated rates of regional and global change.

Construction of a fluvial facies knowledge graph and its application in sedimentary facies identification

Lithofacies paleogeography is a data-intensive discipline that involves the interpretation and compilation of sedimentary *** sedimentary facies analysis is a labor-intensive task with the added complexity of using unstructured knowledge and unstandardized ***,it is very difficult for beginners or non-geology scholars who lack a systematic knowledge and experience in sedimentary facies *** hurdles could be partly alleviated by having a standardized,structured,and systematic knowledge base coupled with an efficient automatic machine-assisted sedimentary facies identification *** this end,this study constructed a knowledge system for fluvial facies and carried out knowledge *** include a domain knowledge graph for types of fluvial facies(meandering,braided and other fluvial depositional environments)and their characteristic features(bedforms,grain size distribution,etc.)with visualization,a method for query and retrieval on a graph database platform,a hierarchical knowledge tree-structure,a data-mining clustering algorithm for machineanalysis of publication texts,and an algorithm model for this area of sedimentary facies *** underlying sedimentary facies identification and knowledge reasoning system is based on expert experience and synthesis of *** testing,17 sets literature publications data that included details of sedimentary facies data(bedforms,grain sizes,etc.)were submitted to the artificial intelligence model,then compared and *** testing set of automated reasoning results yielded an interpretation accuracy of about 90%relative to the published interpretations in those ***,the model and algorithm provide an efficient and automated reasoning technology,which provides a new approach and route for the rapid and intelligent identification of other types of sedimentary facies from literature data or direct use in the field.

The Upper Carboniferous Benxi Formation of the Ordos Basin is the lowest strata overlying Middle Ordovician above the major ca.150-Myr sedimentary gap that characterizes the entire North China Block(NCB).We apply an integrated analysis of stratigraphy,petrography,and U-Pb dates and Hf isotopes on detrital zircons to investigate its provenance and relationships to the progressive collisions that formed the Xing’an-Mongolia Orogenic Belt to the north and the Qinling Orogenic Belt to the *** results show that,in addition to regional patterns of siliciclastic influx from these new uplifted sources,the Benxi Formation is composed of two sequences corresponding to long-term glacial-interglacial cycles during the Moscovian to lower gzhelian stages which drove global changes of eustatic sea level and *** spatio-temporal distribution of sediment isopachs and facies indicate there were two sediment-infilling pulses,during which the southern and the northern Ordos Basin developed tidal-reworked *** age spectra from detrital zircons,trace element patterns and εNd(t)values reveal that the siliciclastics forming the southern delta was sourced in the Qinling Orogenic Belt,whereas the northern delta was derived from the Xing’an-Mongolia Orogenic *** source-to-sink evolution of this Upper Paleozoic system records the progressive development of orogenic belts and uplifts forming on the southern and northern margins of the NCB prior to its collisions with the South China and the Siberian plates,respectively.

Despite being the most widely used unit infield mapping and having the greatest number of active researchers, the interval known as Quaternary is unique among the chronostratigraphic subdivisions of the geological Time Scale （gTS） in having the most controversial definition and rank. After more than 100 years of debate, the base of the Quaternary is now widely recognized at -2.6 Ma, marking a dramatic and so-far irreversible shift to the ice-age-dominated world of oscillating glacial advances over the northern continents.

Astronomical time scale for the lower Doushantuo Formation of early Ediacaran,South China

Nearly 90% of the Ediacaran Period(635–541 Ma) of the Neoproterozoic is represented by the Doushantuo Formation(DST Fm) in South *** lowest Member I is a 3.7 m-thick cap carbonate deposited at the termination of the Cryogenian Marinoan *** DST Fm consists of alternating organic-rich black shale and thinly bedded dolostone, and it contains some of the oldest records of multicellular life and three pronounced negative carbon isotope *** Jiulongwan(JLW) section is a well-studied reference section for these Ediacaran *** analysis of geochemical data through the lower DST Fm(22.3 m) shows 27 predominant ～90 cm sedimentary cycles that correspond to 405-ka long eccentricity *** power spectra of the 405-ka tuned Ca and Fe/Ti series show significant peaks at ～1.2-Ma, 405-ka, 133-ka, 128-ka, 100-ka, 82-ka, ～31-ka and 29-ka periods, respectively.A 11.16 Malong astronomical time scale has been constructed for the lower DST Fm and provide a duration of 1.6 Ma for the cap carbonate(Member Ⅰ) based on the 405-ka long eccentricity cycle *** the U-Pb age of 635.2 ± 0.6 Ma for the volcanic ash bed at the Member Ⅰ/Ⅱboundary, we proposed a 636.8 Ma age for the base of the DST *** ages and astronomical timescale provide important new constraints on the subdivision of Ediacaran strata, and have implications for understanding the character of the first negative δ^(13)C excursion(EN1).Orbital forcing may have been played an important role for the climate changes and the evolution of Ediacaran multi-cellular life and the carbon cycle variations.

Peripheral nerve injuries induce a severe motor and sensory deficit. Since the availability of autologous nerve transplants for nerve repair is very limited, alternative treatment strategies are sought, including the use of tubular nerve guidance conduits(tNgCs). However, the use of tNgCs results in poor functional recovery and central necrosis of the regenerating tissue, which limits their application to short nerve lesion defects(typically shorter than 3 cm). given the importance of vascularization in nerve regeneration, we hypothesized that enabling the growth of blood vessels from the surrounding tissue into the regenerating nerve within the tNgC would help eliminate necrotic processes and lead to improved regeneration. In this study, we reported the application of macroscopic holes into the tubular walls of silk-based tNgCs and compared the various features of these improved silk^(+) tNgCs with the tubes without holes(silk^(–) tNgCs) and autologous nerve transplants in an 8-mm sciatic nerve defect in rats. Using a combination of micro-computed tomography and histological analyses, we were able to prove that the use of silk^(+) tNgCs induced the growth of blood vessels from the adjacent tissue to the intraluminal neovascular formation. A significantly higher number of blood vessels in the silk^(+) group was found compared with autologous nerve transplants and silk^(–), accompanied by improved axon regeneration at the distal coaptation point compared with the silk^(–) tNgCs at 7 weeks postoperatively. In the 15-mm(critical size) sciatic nerve defect model, we again observed a distinct ingrowth of blood vessels through the tubular walls of silk^(+) tNgCs, but without improved functional recovery at 12 weeks postoperatively. Our data proves that macroporous tNgCs increase the vascular supply of regenerating nerves and facilitate improved axonal regeneration in a short-defect model but not in a critical-size defect model. Compressing local atomic neighbourhood descriptors

Many atomic descriptors are currently limited by their unfavourable scaling with the number of chemical elements S *** length of body-ordered descriptors,such as the SOAP power spectrum(3-body)and the(ACE)(multiple body-orders),scales as(NS)^(ν)whereν+1 is the body-order and N is the number of radial basis functions used in the density *** introduce two distinct approaches which can be used to overcome this scaling for the SOAP power ***,we show that the power spectrum is amenable to lossless compression with respect to both S and N,so that the descriptor length can be reduced from O(N^(2)S^(2))to O(NS).Secondly,we introduce a generalised SOAP kernel,where compression is achieved through the use of the total,element agnostic density,in combination with radial *** ideas used in the generalised kernel are equally applicably to any other body-ordered descriptors and we demonstrate this for the(ACSF).
