Sugarcane bagasse amendment mitigates nutrient leaching from a mineral soil under tropical conditions

Large quantities of organic by-products are generated by the sugarcane industry during sugar extraction *** by-products may be used as soil amendments to improve soil quality,as nutrient leaching is common in mineral soils of Florida in USA due to their sandy texture and frequent rain events.A soil column study was designed to evaluate the effects of bagasse application at 85 t ha^(-1) of fresh bagasse,170 t ha^(-1) of fresh bagasse,and 170 t ha^(-1) of fresh bagasse+nitrogen(n)on the leaching potential of carbon(C),n,phosphorus(P),and potassium(K).Bagasse was incorporated within the topsoil(0-15 cm)in outdoor soil columns exposed to natural conditions,with periodical irrigation during the *** approximately 57 weeks,the distributions of C,n,P,and K were evaluated at three soil depths(i.e.,0-15,15-30,and 30-53 cm)within the soil *** organic C(TOC),n,and P in leachates decreased significantly from the soils amended with bagasse compared with the control with no bagasse and no *** on K content changes in the columns,bagasse could also be utilized as a potential source of K for ***,application of bagasse as a soil amendment might be an effective way to sustainably reutilize organic by-products while reducing concerns regarding major nutrients entering groundwater *** results of this study could assist in developing nutrient management plans of using sugarcane bagasse as a potential soil amendment in mineral soils.

Multiferroics are an intriguing family of materials due to the simultaneous presence of two ferroic orderings,namely,ferroelectricity and *** are scientifically and technologically important and have numerous potential applications,such as four-state logic memories and multiferroic tunneling ***,the growth of epitaxial singlephase multiferroic thin films typically requires single crystalline oxide substrates,which hinders their future integration with Sibased *** this study,we report a generalized synthesis method that uses the polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS)-assisted wetetching method with an Sr_(3)Al_(2)O_(6)(SAO)sacrificial layer to transfer freestanding single-phase multiferroic Bi_(2)niMnO_(6)(BnMO)films from conventional SrTiO_(3)(STO)substrates onto a Si *** structures and properties of the films have been characterized before and after the *** transferred films possess good multiferroic properties on Si wafers,indicating full compatibility with modern Si *** method can be generally applicable to other Bi-based multiferroic materials as ***,the original STO substrates after the transfer process have been recycled for preparing new batches of freestanding BnMO films,indicating a low-cost and sustainable method for manufacturing large-volume freestanding complex oxide thin films.

nitrous oxide(n_(2)O)is a potent greenhouse gas that can be emitted during the biological treatment of *** this study,a comparison of the long-term performance characteristics and n_(2)O production of sequencing batch reactors(SBR)and continuous stirred tank reactors(CSTR)during nitrite-based denitrification was *** was found that both reactors had nO_(2)^(-)-n removal efficiencies over 99.9%,but the n_(2)O-n emissions from the SBR reached~2.3%of the removal nitrite-n load,while in the CSTR it never exceeded 0.1%.High frequency sampling during one operation cycle of the SBR demonstrated that the n_(2)O accumulation ratio was~0.1%during the feast period,increased to~1.9%in the first five hours of the famine period,and then gradually reached~2.3%at the end of *** experiments showed that limiting extracellular electron donor is required for n_(2)O accumulation in cells from the SBR-famine period and that cells from the CSTR do not accumulate n_(2)O when either nitrite or carbon is *** notable difference in the two reactor communities was the high level of accumulation of intracellular granules,most likely polyhydroxybutyrate(PHB),in cells during the feast period in the *** assembly and binning found that one genome(PRO1),which is a Thauera,accounted for over half the metagenomic reads in both *** shifts in gene regulation nor community composition explained the observed differences in reactor performance suggesting some post-transcriptional regulation obligatorily linked to antecedent conditions underly increased n_(2)O production in the SBR.

In the developed countries significant proportion of reclaimed asphalt pavement(RAP)materials are used in the construction of *** recently,milled asphalt from old roads was sent to tip as ***,in recent years there has been increased use of waste materials in many road projects within the capital city and federal road *** of RAP materials is relatively new to Ethiopia and understanding its characteristics and related technology with all its potential environmental,economic and social benefits is *** recycling is desired due to its potential economic *** this study characteristics of RAP materials are assessed both from literature and laboratory investigations in order to better understand its performance and *** survey was undertaken to identify factors that are hindering recycling of materials in pavements in Ethiopia and what is to be done to overcome these factors.A policy statement is derived to support a quick start and implementation of asphalt pavement recycling in ***,a huge asphalt pavement network is being constructed and virgin construction material exploration and import materials such as bitumen is costing the country a lot of *** USD 7 Billion worth asphalt pavement have been constructed over the last 23 years to serve the public and freight transport,which requires about USD 176 million annually for maintenance and rehabilitation ***,any saving obtained from recycling will have meaningful impact on cost saving and environment preservation.

Resident involvement in the prostatic urethral lift:implementing innovative technology in an academic setting

Adoption of the prostatic urethral lift(PUL)as a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia highlights the importance of training residents with novel technology without compromising patient *** study examines the effect of resident involvement during PUL on patient and procedural *** chart review was conducted on all consecutive PUL cases performed by a single academic urologist between October 2017 and november *** in post-graduate year(PGY)1–3 are considered junior residents,while those in PGY 4–6 are senior *** International Prostate Symptom Score(IPSS)and quality of life(QOL)scores were used to measure *** and mixed-effects linear regression models were used to compare *** were 110 patients with a median age of 66.4 *** were involved in 73 cases(66.4%),and senior residents were involved in 31 of those *** involvement was not associated with adverse perioperative outcomes with respect to the number of implants fired,the percentage of implants successfully placed,or the postoperative catheterization *** adjustment for confounding factors,junior residents were associated with significantly longer case length compared to the attending alone(+12.6 min,P=0.003)but senior residents were not(+2.4 min,P=0.59).IPSS and QOL scores were not significantly affected by resident involvement(P=0.12 and P=0.21,respectively).The presence of surgeons-in-training,particularly those in the early stages,prolongs PUL case length but does not appear to have an adverse impact on patient outcomes.

Will biomass be used for bioenergy or transportation biofuels? What drivers will influence biomass allocation

Potential competition for biomass for current and future bioenergy/biofuel uses in Brazil, Denmark,Sweden and the USA were compared. In each of these countries, bioenergy and biofuels are already important in their energy mix. However, there is limited competition for biomass between bioenergy(heat/power/residential/industrial) and transportation biofuel applications. This situation is likely to continue until advanced biofuel technology becomes much more commercially established. In each of these countries, biomass is predominantly used to produce bioenergy, even in those regions where biofuels are significant component of their transportation sector(Brazil,Sweden and USA). The vast majority of biofuel production continues to be based on sugar, starch and oil rich feedstocks, while bioenergyis produced almost exclusively from forest biomass with agricultural biomass having a small, but increasing, secondary role. Current and proposed commercial scale biomass-to-ethanol facilities almost exclusively use agriculture derived residues(corn stover/wheat straw/sugarcane bagasse). Competition for biomass feedstocks for bioenergy/biofuel applications, is most likely to occur for agricultural biomass with coproduct lignin and other residues used to concomitantly produce heat and electricity on site at biofuel production facilities.

Recent advances in nanomaterials for high-performance Li–S batteries

This article reviews nanotechnology as a practical solution for improving lithium-sulfur batteries. Lithiumsulfur batteries have been widely examined because sulfur has many advantageous properties such as a high crustal abundance, low environmental impact, low cost, high gravimetric(2600 W h kg-1) and volumetric(2800 W h L-1) energy densities, assuming complete conversion of sulfur to lithium sulfide(Li2S)upon lithiation. However, lithium-sulfur batteries have not yet reach commercialization due to demerits involving the formation of soluble lithium polysulfides(Li2Sn, n=3–8), low electrical conductivity, and low loading density of sulfur. These issues arise mainly due to the polysulfide shuttle phenomenon and the inherent insulating nature of sulfur. To overcome these issues, strategies have been pursued using nanotechnology applied to porous carbon nanocomposites, hollow one-dimensional carbon nanomaterials, graphene nanocomposites, and three-dimensional carbon nanostructured matrices. This paper aims to review various solutions pertaining to the role of nanotechnology in synthesizing nanoscale and nanostructured materials for advanced and high-performance lithium–sulfur batteries. Furthermore, we highlight perspective research directions for commercialization of lithium–sulfur batteries as a major power source for electric vehicles and large-scale electric energy storage.

Distribution of ^3H—nicotine in Rat Tissues Under the Influence of Simulated Microgravity

Rat tail suspension offers a useful model to reproduce physiologic responses to *** present study was conducted in the head-down-tilt(HDT) rat model to assess changes in metabolism of body tissues employing 3H-nicotine. Twelve male rats were used in the study. Half of the rats were tail suspended at 30°for two weeks on a 12/12 light/dark cycle. During this period,body weight, food and fluid intakes were measured. At term, animals were anesthetized and injected IV withe a solution contaming 4 microuries of micotine. After 90 min the animals were sacrificed, exsanguinated and tissues (brain,blood,trachea,salivary gland,lung,heart,esophagus,spleen, kidneys and testes) were harvested. The distribution of 3H-nicotine per gram of each tissue was determinded and ealeulated as percent of total injected radioactivity. Final body weights of suspended ammals were significantly (P n those of eontrols(309±21 vs 350±11g). 3Hnicotine waw retained in greatest amounts by the kindneys, followed inorder by salivary glands, spleen, and gastrointestinal tissues. compared to non-suspended control, the tissue retention of nicotine in suspended animals was decreased in the following tissues:esphyagus (25 %), aorta (25%). fundus (25%), trachea (22%), adrenals (18%), spleen (17 %), and pancreas (12 %). The decreased retention of mcotine in tissues from suspended animals may be indicative of the fluid shifts and changes in blood flow to those tissue beds. The lack of differnces in nicotine retention in liver and kidney between control and suspended groups may implicate a normal metabolic function of these organs even under simulated weightlessness.
