Mechanical and biological properties of Ti–(0–25 wt%)Nb alloys for biomedical implants application

Binary titanium–niobium(Ti–Nb)alloys have recently been attracted due to low Young’s moduli and non-toxic *** study explores the influence of low Nb content(0–25 wt%)on the comprehensive parameters of tensile stress–strain relationships(ultimate strength(rUTS),yield strength(r0.2)and elastic modulus(E)),surfaces properties(Vickers microhardness,surface roughness(Ra),water contact angle(WCA),X-ray diffraction(XRD)and scanning electron microscopy(SEM)),corrosion resistance(in artificial saliva and lactic acid)and biological properties(cytotoxicity and alkaline phosphatase activity of MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblasts)of Ti–xNb alloys(x紏5,10,15,20 and 25 wt%),with using commercially pure grade 2 titanium(cp-Ti)as *** results shown that all the Ti–xNb alloys comprised atb Ti alloy phases,such that the b phase increased correspondingly with the increased amount of Nb in the alloy,as well as the reduction of E(69–87 GPa).Except Ti–5Nb,all other Ti–xNb alloys showed a significantly higher hardness,increased rUTS and r0.2,and decreased WCA compared with *** corrosion was detected on Ti–xNb alloys and cp-Ti in artificial saliva and lactic acid *** cytotoxicity of Ti–xNb alloys was comparable to that of cp-Ti in MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblasts without interference from differentiation behaviour,but the proliferation rate of the Ti–5Nb alloy was lower than other *** overall,binary Ti–(10–25 wt%)Nb alloys are promising candidate for orthopaedic and dental implants due to their improved mechanical properties and comparable biological performance,while Ti–5Nb should be used with caution.

Titanium(Ti)has been used for long in dentistry and medicine for implant *** the years,not only the commercially pure Ti but also some alloys such as binary and tertiary Ti alloys were *** aim of this review is to describe and compare the current literature on binary Ti alloys,including Ti-Zr,Ti-In,Ti-Ag,Ti-Cu,Ti-Au,Ti-Pd,Ti-Nb,Ti-Mn,Ti-Mo,Ti-Cr,Ti-Co,Ti-Sn,Ti-Ge and Ti-Ga,in particular to mechanical,chemical and biological parameters related to implant *** was searched using the PubMed and Web of Science databases,as well as google without limiting the year,but with principle key terms such as‘Ti alloy’,‘binary Ti’,‘Ti-X’(with X is the alloy element),‘dental implant’and‘medical implant’.Only laboratory studies that intentionally for implant or biomedical applications were *** to available literatures,we might conclude that most of the binary Ti alloys with alloying<20%elements of Zr,In,Ag,Cu,Au,Pd,Nb,Mn,Cr,Mo,Sn and Co have high potential as implant materials,due to good mechanical performance without compromising the biocompatibility and biological behaviour compare to cp-Ti.

Titanium and its alloys are widely used in biomedical devices,***,due to its biocompati-bility and osseointegration *** fact,fungal(Candida spp.)infection has been identified as one of the key reasons causing the failure of the device that is inevitable and impactful to the ***,this study evaluated the surface morphology,surface chemical composition and Candida albicans adhesion on specimens of 16 binary Tialloys(-5 wt%of any one of the alloy elements:Ag,AI,Au,Co,Cr,Cu,Fe,In,Mn,Mo,Nb,Pd,Pt,Sn,V and Zr)compared with cp-Ti,targeting to seek for the binary Ti-alloys which has the lowest *** *** albicans cultures were grown on the specimens for 48 h,and colony forming units(CFUs)and real-time polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR)were used to evaluate the biofilm formation *** electron mi-croscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy confirmed the formation of *** biofilm on all specimens'surfaces,such that CFU results showed Ti-Mo,Ti-Zr,Ti-AI and Ti-V have less *** formed on the surfaces than ***-PCR showed Ti-Zr and Ti-Cu have significantly higher *** DNA concentrations than Ti-AI and Ti-V(P<0.05),whereas Ti-Cu has even showed a statistically higher concentration than Ti-Au,Ti-Co,Ti-In and Ti-Pt(P<0.05).This study confirmed that Ti-Mo,Ti-Zr,Ti-AI and Ti-V have lower the occurrence of *** which might be clinically advantageous for medical devices,but Ti-Cu should be used in caution.

Macrophage plasticity is critical for normal tissue repair following *** pathologic states such as diabetes,macrophage plasticity is impaired,and macrophages remain in a persistent proinflammatory state;however,the reasons for this are ***,using single-cell RNA sequencing of human diabetic wounds,we identified increased JMJD3 in diabetic wound macrophages,resulting in increased inflammatory gene ***,we report that in wound healing,JMJD3 directs early macrophage-mediated inflammation via JAK1,3/STAT3 ***,in the diabetic state,we found that IL-6,a cytokine increased in diabetic wound tissue at later time points post-injury,regulates JMJD3 expression in diabetic wound macrophages via the JAK1,3/STAT3 pathway and that this late increase in JMJD3 induces NFκB-mediated inflammatory gene transcription in wound macrophages via an H3K27me3 ***,RNA sequencing of wound macrophages isolated from mice with JMJD3-deficient myeloid cells(Jmjd3f/fLyz2Cre+)identified that the STING gene(Tmem173)is regulated by JMJD3 in wound *** limits inflammatory cytokine production by wound macrophages during ***,in diabetic mice,its role changes to limit wound repair and enhance *** finding is important since STING is associated with chronic inflammation,and we found STING to be elevated in human and murine diabetic wound macrophages at late time ***,we demonstrate that macrophage-specific,nanoparticle inhibition of JMJD3 in diabetic wounds significantly improves diabetic wound repair by decreasing inflammatory cytokines and *** together,this work highlights the central role of JMJD3 in tissue repair and identifies cell-specific targeting as a viable therapeutic strategy for nonhealing diabetic wounds.

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is the most rapidly increasing type of cancer in the United States. HCC is a highly malignant cancer, accounting for at least 14000 deaths in the United States annually, and it ranks third as a cause of cancer mortality in men. One major difficulty is that most patients with HCC are diagnosed when the disease is already at an advanced stage, and the cancer cannot be surgically removed. Furthermore, because almost all patients have cirrhosis, neither chemotherapy nor major resections are well tolerated. Clearly there is need of a multidisciplinary approach for the management of HCC. For example, there is a need for better understanding of the fundamental etiologic mechanisms that are involved in hepatocarcinogenesis, which could lead to the development of successful preventive and therapeutic modalities. It is also essential to define the cellular and molecular bases for malignant transformation of hepatocytes. Such knowledge would:(1) greatly facilitate the identification of patients at risk;(2) prompt efforts to decrease risk factors; and(3) improve surveillance and early diagnosis through diagnostic imaging modalities. Possible benefits extend also to the clinical management of this disease. Because there are many factors involved in pathogenesis of HCC,this paper reviews a multidisciplinary perspective of recent advances in basic and clinical understanding of HCC that include: molecular hepatocarcinogenesis, noninvasive diagnostics modalities, diagnostic pathology, surgical modality, transplantation, local therapy and oncological/target therapeutics.

Endoscopic ultrasonography(EUS) is currently an in-tegral investigation of many gastrointestinal *** has been shown to have a higher efficacy thanconventional computed tomography in detection andcharacterization of small lesions especially in the pan-creas. Much effort has been put to further improvethe sensitivity, specificity and overall accuracy of *** of the major advances is the utilization of contrastagents for better delineation of the vascularity and tis-sue perfusion of the target lesion. This article describesthe basic principles of ultrasound contrast agents andthe different modalities used in contrast-enhanced EUS(CE-EUS) including contrast-enhanced Doppler EUS(CED-EUS) and contrast-enhanced harmonic EUS(CEH-EUS). In addition, the current applications of contrastenhanced EUS in different gastrointestinal conditionswere discussed. Furthermore, the future developmentof hybrid approaches combining CE-EUS with other im-aging modalities and the potential therapeutic aspectof using it as a vector for drug delivery were also dis-cussed.

戊型病毒性肝炎是全球最主要的病毒性肝炎之一,近半个世纪多次发生大规模暴发,孕妇感染戊型肝炎后病死率高达20%.近年随着基于构象型表位多肽E2的戊型肝炎诊断试剂的出现,戊型肝炎的病原学诊断及流行病学调查均获得了较大的发展,越来越引起人们的重视.由我国自主创新研制的重组戊型肝炎疫苗现已在中国完成世界上首个Ⅲ期临床试验,其预防戊型肝炎的保护率达到100%（95%CI,72.1%~100.0%）.

Is There a Crisis in Heart Transplantation? Reflection over 10 Years

Heart transplantation is without doubt a very effective treatment for patients’ whose lives and well-being are threatened by their failing heart. We previously categorized our concerns into four areas or Ds: Donor availability, Disorganization, Disillusionment (of clinicians) and Disaffection (of tomorrow’s clinicians). After a decade, this is a timely reflection on this crisis of cardiac transplantation. It is also appropriate to set this in the context of a fifth D, the Demand for heart transplantation. In this reflective analysis, we use the 5 Ds to explore the current climate in heart transplantation, with particular reference to the situation in the UK.
