Drying characteristics and quality of bananas under infrared radiation heating

Hot air(HA)drying of banana has low drying efficiency and results in undesirable product *** objectives of this research were to investigate the feasibility of infrared(IR)heating to improve banana drying rate,evaluate quality of the dried product,and establish models for predicting drying *** slices of 5 mm and 8 mm thickness were dried with IR and HA at product temperatures of 60℃,70℃ and 80℃.Banana drying characteristics and changes in residual polyphenol oxidase(PPO),Hydroxymethylfurfural(HMf),color,moisture content(mc)and water activity during the treatments were *** showed that significant moisture reduction and higher drying rates were achieved with IR drying compared to HA drying in the early *** drying data could be fitted to the Page model for accurate prediction of mc change for IR and HA drying with mean R2 of *** was noted that enzyme inactivation occurred more quickly with IR than with HA drying.A unique response of PPO under IR and HA drying was *** heating of banana inactivated PPO within the first 20 min of drying at 60℃,70℃ and 80℃,while PPO was first activated before inactivation at 60℃ and 70℃ drying with *** highest HMf content occurred in banana slices with 5 mm thickness dried with IR at a product temperature of 80℃.It is therefore recommendable to dry banana with IR at product temperature of 70℃ or below to preserve the product *** findings are new and provide more insight in the application of IR heating for drying banana for improved drying rate and product quality.

Annual variations of interstellar scintillation can be modelled to constrain parameters of the ionized interstellar *** a pulsar is in a binary system,then investigating the orbital parameters is possible through analysis of the orbital variation of *** observations carried out from 2011 to 2020 by the European Pulsar Timing Array radio telescopes,PSRs J0613-0200and J0636+5128 show strong annual variations in their scintillation velocity,while the former additionally exhibits an orbital *** theory and Markov-chain-Monte-Carlo methods are used to interpret these periodic *** assume a thin and anisotropic scattering screen model,and discuss the mildly and extremely anisotropic scattering *** J0613-0200is best described by mildly anisotropic scattering,while PSR J0636+5128 exhibits extremely anisotropic *** measure the distance,velocity,and degree of anisotropy of the scattering screen for our two pulsars,finding that scattering screen distances from Earth for PSRs J0613-0200 and J0636+5128 are 316_(-20)^(+28)pc and 262_(-38)^(+96)pc,*** positions of these scattering screens are coincident with the shell of the Local Bubble towards both *** associations add to the growing evidence of the Local Bubble shell as a dominant region of scattering along many sightlines.

The management of cyanobacteria and potential exposure to associated biotoxins requires the allocation of scarce resources across a range of freshwater resources within various jurisdictions. Cost effective and reliable methods for sample processing and analysis form the foundation of the protocol yielding reliable data from which to derive important decisions. In this study the utilization of new methods to collect, process and analyze samples enhanced our ability to evaluate cyanobacterial populations. Extraction of phycocyanin using the single freeze thaw method provided more accurate and precise measurements (CV 4.7% and 6.4%), offering a simple and cost-effective means to overcome the influence of morphological variability. In-vacuo concentration of samples prior to ELISA analysis provided a detection limit of 0.001 μg·L?1 mc. fractionation of samples (?1) = ?0.279 + (1.368 ? Log PC (μg·L?1) while in an Aphanizomemon spp. dominant system Log mc (ng·L?1) = 0.385 + (0.449 ? Log PC (μg·L?1). These methods and sampling protocol could be used in other aquatic systems across a broader regional landscape to estimate the levels of microcystins.

Alosa pseudoharengus is an anadromous fish that migrates from marine to freshwaters to spawn. The early larval and juvenile forms are known to be planktivorous, where heavy feeding upon their preferred food source of large crustacean zooplankton often results in changes to composition and size structure within this trophic guild which in turn can result in shifts within the trophic spectrum and a classic trophic cascade. In this study of Lower Mill Pond, Brewster MA, we evaluated the feeding strategy of juvenile Alosa to determine whether juvenile alewife switches to feeding largely on cyanobacteria and whether cyanotoxins microcystin (MC) and β-methlyamino-L-alanine (BMAA) bioaccumulate in their muscle tissue. Within 15 - 30 days of their estimated spawning date, overexploitation of crustacean zooplankton resulted in a shift from planktivory to benthic detritivory for the majority of their life history, although this did not reduce their condition based on weight-length relationships (Log Wwt. = -5.503 + (3.101 × Log Length).
