The story of the Ea.th's cha.ging la.dsca.es is often told through pa.eogeogra.hic ma.s. These ima.es a.e some of the most a.cessible a.d widely used illustra.ions in the Ea.th sciences. However, no forma. procedure for the crea.ion of photorea.istic pa.eoma.s(i.e., pa.eosa.ellite ima.es) exists. Using a. exa.ple from the La.e Jura.sic of the Rocky Mounta.n region, we present a.method for ma.ing pa.eoenvironmenta. a.d pa.eosa.ellite ma.s tha. is sca.a.le, reproducible, testa.le, a.d incorpora.es peer review. The process includes a.litera.ure review followed by da.a.visua.iza.ion, pa.eoenvironmenta. interpreta.ion, peer-review,itera.ive revisions, a.d the crea.ion of a.fa.se contour ma. a.d color gra.ient used to render a.pa.eosa.ellite ima.e. Pa.eosa.ellite ima.es a.e photorea.istic versions of pa.eoenvironmenta. ma.s tha. incorpora.e globa. clima.ic a.d tectonic informa.ion a. well a. principles of a.tua.ism; they ca. be ma.e through compa.ison to a.a.ogous modern la.dsca.es. a. importa.t component of this process is tha. the da.a.ma.s tha. ground this pa.eoma.ping process a.low eva.ua.ion of where pa.eoenvironmenta. interpreta.ions a.e wellsupported by outcrop a.d subsurfa.e da.a. a.d where such visua.iza.ion is highly interpretive-often beca.se of la.k of a.a.la.le rocks or studies in a.given a.ea. a. such, our pa.eoenvironmenta. ma.s a.d pa.eosa.ellite ima.es a.e testa.le pictoria. hypotheses. 在本文中,作者希望讨论有关决定世界上各种农作物产量上限的原理。积若干年的经验,人们已发现了许多种植农作物的有效方法,我们知道了有关植物对矿物质的需求,并且开始深入了解它们对水的需要;我们知道如何消灭病虫害,至少,在原理上是如此;我们也懂得如何测定一种作物的最适温度条件,并如何以育种方法使植物适应于气候等。因此我们有条件单独地讨论一下种植于最适宜的温度中,而且不受矿质营养、水分和病虫害限制的条件下的作物。在上述条件下,一般认为植物生产力的限制因子是光合作用的效率,通过它植物把光能转变为植物体中储藏物质的能量。通过试验测定植物转化和储藏太阳能效率的方法颇为简单。我们在一定的土地面积上种植一些种子或其他植物材料。在生长季终了时测定产生了多少植物体的干物质——茎、叶、根、花等等。在生长季中间也可以利用积光计,以测定投射于
