Activity of metalloproteinases and adiponectin in obese patients——a possible factor of incisional hernias after bariatric procedures

Purpose： Metalloproteinases are a key component of the pathogenesis of abdominal hernias. Obesity is considered a risk factor in herniogenesis and hernia recurrence. The aim of this study was to evaluate the serum concentrations of metalloproteinase-2（MMP-2）, MMP-9, MMP-13, and adiponectin in morbidly obese and nonoverweight controls. Materials and methods： The participants were recruited from among patients undergoing bariatric and non-bariatric surgery and divided into two groups： I（body mass index（BMI）≥35 kg/m^2, n=40） and II（BMI〈25 kg/m^2, n=30）. Serum concentrations of MMP-2, MMP-9, MMP-13, and adiponectin were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay（ELISA）. Results： A statistically significant difference between groups was observed for MMP-2 concentration. The median MMP-9 concentration was higher in the obese group, but the difference was not statistically significant. Median MMP-13 concentrations did not differ between groups. Serum adiponectin concentration was insignificantly higher in the non-obese group. Conclusions： The elevated serum MMP-2 and MMP-9 concentrations in obese individuals may be related to the higher incidence of incisional hernias in this population.

Magnesium (Mg) alloys have become a potential material for orthopedic implants due to their unnecessary implant removal, biocompatibility, and mechanical integrity until fracture healing. This study examined the in vitro and in vivo degradation of an Mg fixation screw composed of Mg-0.45Zn-0.45Ca (ZX00, in wt.%). With ZX00 human-sized implants, in vitro immersion tests up to 28 days under physiological conditions, along with electrochemical measurements were performed for the first time. In addition, ZX00 screws were implanted in the diaphysis of sheep for 6, 12, and 24 weeks to assess the degradation and biocompatibility of the screws in vivo. Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), micro-computed tomography (μCT), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and histology, the surface and cross-sectional morphologies of the corrosion layers formed, as well as the bone-corrosion-layer-implant interfaces, were analyzed. Our findings from in vivo testing demonstrated that ZX00 alloy promotes bone healing and the formation of new bone in direct contact with the corrosion products. In addition, the same elemental composition of corrosion products was observed for in vitro and in vivo experiments;however, their elemental distribution and thicknesses differ depending on the implant location. Our findings suggest that the corrosion resistance was microstructure-dependent. The head zone was the least corrosion-resistant, indicating that the production procedure could impact the corrosion performance of the implant. In spite of this, the formation of new bone and no adverse effects on the surrounding tissues demonstrated that the ZX00 is a suitable Mg-based alloy for temporary bone implants.

Hybrid power supply system consists of a number of independent and different sources of electrical energy with different operating times during different seasons and with energy storage system. Deployment of a hybrid power system is expected in places outside the normal distribution network. For the further research and improvements it is necessary to know in detail the power flow from various sources to the load or to storage battery depending on different seasons. The paper presents data analysis results computed by application developed for detailed analysis of power flows within hybrid power system. Developed application analyses the data from the monitoring system. Data has been acquired and recorded within last year. This data is visualized as power flows in the individual hybrid power system circuits. Together with electrical power the effectiveness and performance parameters of rectifier and DC/AC converter are evaluated. The paper describes achieved results and needs for further improvements of such solution.

Residence Time Distribution at Laminar Pulsatile Flow in a Straight Pipe

This paper deals with the problem of theoretical identification of the residence time distribution （RTD） characteristics of a straight pipe at laminar pulsatile flow, if tracer diffusion can be neglected. This situation is typical for micro-apparatuses （e.g. fluidic element） and also for flow in large arteries. Residence time distribution based on velocity profiles at pulsatile flow of a Newtonian liquid in a rigid pipe will be derived theoretically and compared with the well known results for a constant flow rate E（τ） = τ-^2/2τ^3 at τ 〉 τ^-/2, where E （τ） is differential distribution, x is residence time and τ^- is the mean residence time. The following part of the paper deals stimulus response experimental techniques using tracers. The principal problem related to laminar and convection dominated pulsatile flows is discussed： Can the impulse response also be identified with the actual residence time distribution in the case of variable flow？ The general answer is no, and differences between RTD and impulse responses are evaluated as a function of the frequency and amplitude of pulsatile flows.

In this paper standard techniques for characterization of HgCdTe liquid phase epitaxial layers (LPE) were presented. The performance of long wavelength p on n HgCdTe photodiodes fabricated by arsenic diffusion was described. The correlation between LPE HgCdTe material parameters and properties of the infrared photodiodes was demonstrated.

Irritable bowel syndrome(IBS),with the prevalence of 10%-20 % of the population has become an emerging problem worldwide. IBS is a functional gastrointestinal(GI) disorder characterized by abdominal pain or discomfort and altered bowel habits. The etiology of IBS contains genetic,psychological,and immunological factors,and has not been fully elucidated; of note,recent studies also point at environmental pollution and its role in the development of functional GI diseases. In this review we focus on several environmental factors,such as bacterial contamination,air pollution,radiation and even stress as potential triggers of IBS. We discuss associated disturbances in homeostasis,such as changes in intestinal microbiome and related pathophysiological mechanisms. Based on the effect of environmental factors on the GI tract,we also propose novel targets in IBS treatment.

The paper presents the results for water confined in a human breast cancerous tissue, a single stranded DNA, a double stranded DNA and in phospholipids (DPPC - D-a-Phosphati dylcholine, dipalmitoyl). The interfacial water in DNA and lipids is represented by a double band in the region of the OH stretching mode of water corresponding to the symmetric and asymmetric vibrational modes, in contrast to water confined in the cancerous breast tissue where only one band at 3311 cm-1 has been recorded. The marked red-shift of the maximum peak position of the OH stretching mode confirms that the vibrational properties of the interfacial water observed in restricted biological environment differ drastically from those in bulk water. The change of vibrational pattern of behavior may be due to the decoupling of the vibrations of the OH bonds in water molecule or change of the vibrational selection rules at biological interfaces. According to our knowledge Raman vibrational properties of water confined in the normal and cancerous breast tissue of the same patient have not been reported in literature yet. Here we have also presented the first Raman ‘optical biopsy’ images of the non-cancerous and cancerous (infiltrating ductal cancer) human breast tissues.
