Fresh.ater vertebrate and invertebrate prey species commonly rely on ch.mosensory information, including non-injury released disturbance cues, to assess local predation th.eats. We conducted laboratory studies to （1） determine if urea can function as a disturbance cue in juvenile convict cich.ids and rainbow trout and （2） determine if th. background level of urea influences th. beh.vioral response to a subsequent pulse of urea （＇background noise＇ h.poth.sis）. In th. first series of trials, juve- nile cich.ids and trout were exposed to urea at varying concentrations （0 to 0.5 mg L-1 for cich.ids and 0 to 1.0 mg L1 for trout）. Our results suggest th.t both.cich.lds and trout exh.bited functionally similar responses to urea and conspecific disturbance cues and th.t increasing th. concentration of urea results in an increase intensity of antipredator beh.viour. In th. second series of trials, we pre-exposed cich.ids or trout to intermediate or h.gh.concentrations of urea （or a distilled water control） and th.n tested for th. response to a second pulse of urea at at intermediate or h.gh.concentrations （versus a distilled water control）. Our results demon- strate th.t pre-exposure to urea reduces or eliminates th. response to a second pulse of urea, supporting th. background noise h.- poth.sis. Togeth.r, our results suggest th.t pulses of urea, released by disturbed or stressed individuals, may function as an early warning signal in fresh.ater prey species

Supercolonies of th. red fire ant Solenopsis saevissima （Smith. develop in disturbed environments and likely alter th. ant community in th. native range of th. species. For example, in French.Guiana only 8 ant species were repeatedly noted as nesting in close vicinity to its mounds. h.re, we verified if a sh.red set of biological, ecological, and beh.vioral traits migh. explain h.w th.se 8 species are able to nest in th. presence of S. saevissima. We did not find th.s to be th. case. We did find, h.wever, th.t all of th.m are able to live in disturbed h.bitats. It is likely th.t over th. course of evolution each.of th.se species acquired th. capacity to live syntopically with.S. saevissima th.ough.its own set of traits, wh.re colony size （4 species develop large colonies）, cuticular compounds wh.ch.do not trigger aggressiveness （6 species） and submissive beh.viors （4 species） complement each.oth.r.

Belonech.tina capitata, a typically middle to late Ordovician ch.tinozoan index taxon was for th. first time recovered from th. north.astern Kumaon region, a part of Garh.al-Kumaon Teth.s basin of th. h.malaya, India. Th.s species is of great biostratigraph.c importance and h.s already been reported from Avalonia, Baltica and north.rn Gondwana. Th. study area was during Ordovician, part of a lowpalaeolatitudinal Gondwana region. Th. vesicles of recovered forms are black and fragmentary. Th.s is principally attributed to intense tectonic activity during th. h.malayan orogenic movement wh.ch.resulted into h.gh.th.rmal alteration. Th. ch.tinozoans are found along with.melanosclerites.

Ph.sph.rus(P) is a limited resource th.t could be depleted. Consequently, recycling th. P contained in sewage sludge, including sewage sludge incineration ash.SIA), from wastewater treatment plants is a possibility to be explored. A greenh.use experiment using annual ryegrass(Lolium multiflorum L.) was performed with.an experimental design of th.ee completely randomized blocks of two soils and 29 treatments: one control with.ut P and two levels of 9 and 26 kg total P h.^(-1) from 14 different sources: twelve SIAs(not contaminated by trace metals) from th. US and Canada, one commercial synth.tic fertilizer(triple superph.sph.te(TSP)), and one commercial rock ph.sph.te(RP). h.gh.r ryegrass biomass levels were ach.eved at th. h.gh.r fertilization rate(26 kg total P h.^(-1))and wh.n using th. SIAs with.th. h.gh.st P solubility percentage(PSP)(≥ 54% of total P). Th. biomass increases following SIA application were as h.gh.as 29% and 59% more th.n th. control for th. sandy loam and clayey soil, respectively, but 40% less th.n in TSP for both.soils. A similar beh.vior was observed for P uptake, with.a maximum increase of 26% for th. clayey soil, and 165% for th. sandy loam soil. Th. ryegrass biomass and P uptake increases due to SIA application were larger th.n th.se due to RP application in th. clayey soil, but similar to th.se in th. sandy loam soil. Th. SIAs with.a PSP of ≥ 54% significantly increased soil available P stocks and saturation. According to our findings, we conclude th.t th. SIAs from municipal and agrifood industries h.ve a potential for P agricultural recycling, but th.ir efficiencies vary.

In th.s paper, a novel unified plasticity meth.dology is proposed to allow th. coupling of rate-and temperature-sensitivity of engineering alloys as well as th. non-linear kinematic h.rdening beh.vior often observed during cyclic loading. Th. proposed meth.dology is general in th. sense th.t an arbitrary constitutive model may be ch.sen for th. viscoplastic part, as well as th. cyclic part. We adapt our model with.a ph.sically-motivated viscoplasticity flow rule and a nonlinear kinematic h.rdening model. In contrast with.oth.r unified plasticity models, th. simplified th.ory involves few material parameters th.t can be readily calibrated from standard mech.nical tests. Th. capabilities of th. proposed th.ory are demonstrated for a h.t rolled annealed 304 L stainless steel supplied by Vimetal Peckover. Th. model is tested with.stress–strain curves obtained from standard tensile and cyclic uniaxial tests at various strain amplitudes and strain-rates, and good accuracy of th. response is obtained for strains up to 15%, with.n a temperature range of 293–673 K. We note th.t th. cyclic plasticity model in our adapted th.ory can be readily enh.nced with.ratch.tting, mean stress relaxation, strain amplitude h.story, Masing effects or oth.r complex capabilities.

A unique process of ch.mical oxidation polymerization of aniline using manganese dioxide (MnO2) as th. oxidizing agent in an aqueous medium is described. Th. reaction between aniline and MnO2 follows a mech.nism by wh.ch.th. organic monomer is oxidized wh.le th. metal oxide undergoes reductive dissolution. Th. effects of th. amount of oxidizing agent and aniline, ph.and temperature of th. reactive system, type of acid on th. yield and conductivity of polyaniline are discussed. Th. resulting polyaniline was ch.racterized by IR and UV-Vis spectrometry. Polyaniline with.a conductivity of 12.5 S/cm was obtained using 0.033 mol of aniline oxidized by 0.023 mol MnO2 in th. presence of 100 mL of 2.7 mol/L h.l at 25degreesC for 4 h.

BACKGROUND Rectal sparing is an option for some rectal cancers with.complete or good response after ch.moradioth.rapy(CRT);h.wever,it h.s never been evaluated in patients with.*** assessed long-term outcomes of a rectal-sparing approach.in a liver-first strategy for patients with.rectal cancer with.resectable liver *** SUMMARY We examined patients wh. underwent an organ-sparing approach.for rectal cancer with.synch.onous liver metastases using a liver-first strategy during 2010-2015(n=8).Patients received primary ch.moth.rapy and pelvic *** surgery was performed during th. interval between CRT completion and rectal tumor *** and oncological ch.racteristics and long-term outcomes were *** SUMMARY All patients underwent liver metastatic resection with.curative *** R0 rate was 100%.Six and two patients underwent local excision and a watch.and-wait(WW)approach.*** patients h.d T3N1 tumors at diagnosis and h.d good clinical response after *** median survival time was 60(range,14-127)*** patients were disease free for 5,8,and 10 years after th. *** patients developed metastatic recurrence in th. liver(n=5)and/or lungs(n=2).Only one patient developed local recurrence concurrent with.metastatic recurrence 24 mo after th. WW *** patients died during *** Th. results suggest good local control in patients undergoing organ-sparing strategies for rectal cancer with.synch.onous liver *** trials are required to validate th.se data and identify good candidates for th.se strategies.
