Evidence for a female-produced, long range pheromone of Anoplophora glab.ipennis （Coleoptera Ceramb.cidae）

Volatiles from female Asian longhorned b.etle （ ALb.）, Anoplophora glab.ipenhis, were evaluated as candidate sex pheromone components. Previous studies on ALb.have revealed several antennally active compounds from virgin females; however the origins and activity of these compounds were not apparent and require further investigation. We tested the hypothesis that one or more of the ALb.contact sex pheromones is a precursor that undergoes ab.otic oxidation to yield volatile pheromone components, and evaluated the activity of these compounds using lab.ratory and field b.oassays. Gas chromatogra- phy coupled electroantennography detection （GC-EAD） analysis indicated the presence of three antennally active aldehydes （heptanal, nonanal, and hexadecanal） in female cuticular extracts exposed to ozone or UV and visib.e light. In lab.ratory b.oassays using a Y-tub. olfactometer, males were preferentially attracted to ozonized female b.dy washes over crude b.dy washes. Similarly, synthetic formulations of these compounds were preferred over controls in the olfactometer. Field trapping experiments conducted from 2006 to 2008 in Ningxia, China showed that synthetic lures of the three aldehydes formulated in a ratio simulating that of virgin females attracted more b.etles compared to controls, and that comb.nations of these aldehydes, linalool oxide, and host kairomones captured more b.etles than controls, and captured significantly more males.

Multi-Scale Modeling of Metal-Composite Interfaces in Titanium-Graphite Fib.r Metal Laminates Part I: Molecular Scale

This study presents the first stage of a multi-scale numerical framework designed to predict the non-linear constitutive b.havior of metal-composite interfaces in titanium-graphite fib.r metal laminates. Scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction techniques are used to characterize the b.seline physical and chemical state of the interface. The physics of adhesion b.tween the metal and polymer matrix composite components are then evaluated on the atomistic scale using molecular dynamics simulations. Interfacial mechanical properties are sub.equently derived from these simulations using classical mechanics and thermodynamics. These molecular-level property predictions are used in a companion study to parameterize a continuum-level finite element model of the interface b. means of a traction-separation constitutive law. Extension of the proposed approach to other dissimilar metal- or metal oxide-polymer interfaces is also discussed.

Cost of treating chronic hepatitis b.Comparison of current treatment guidelines

AIM:To compare program costs of chronic hepatitis b.CHb. screening and treatment using Australian and other pub.ished CHb.treatment ***:Economic modeling demonstrated that in Australia a strategy of hepatocellular cancer(HCC) prevention in patients with CHb.is more cost-effective than current standard care,or HCC *** upon this model,we developed the b.positive program to optimize CHb.management of Australians b.rn in countries of high CHb.*** estimated CHb.program costs using the b.positive program algorithm and compared them to estimated costs of using the CHb.treatment guidelines pub.ished b. the AsianPacific,American and European Associations for the Study of Liver Disease(APASL,AASLD,EASL) and those suggested b. an independent United States hepatology *** used a Markov model that factored in the costs of CHb.screening and treatment,individualized b. viral load and alanine aminotransferase levels,and calculated the relative costs of program *** were discounted b. 5% and calculated in Australian dollars(AUD).RESULTS:Using the b.positive algorithm,total program costs amount to 13 979 224 AUD,or 9634 AUD per *** least costly strategy is b.sed upon using the AASLD guidelines,which would cost 34% less than our b.positive *** the EASL and the United States Expert Group guidelines would increase program costs b. 46%.The largest expenditure relates to the cost of drug treatment(66.9% of total program costs).The contrib.tion of CHb.surveillance(20.2%) and HCC screening and surveillance(6.6%) is small-and together they represent only approximately a quarter of the total program ***:The significant cost variations in CHb.screening and treatment using different guidelines are relevant for clinicians and policy makers involved in designing population-b.sed disease control programs.

Encouraging Visual Outcome of a New Accommodative Intraocular Lens: A Retrospective Long-Term Study with a Mean Follow-Up of 5.3 Years

Purpose: To assess the visual outcome after implantation of the new Hydrophylic IOL type 41 b.G accommodating intraocular lens (AIOL). Methods: The presented lens was implanted during cataract surgery. All patients were offered follow-ups, allowing two postoperative measurements to b. performed at 3 months and b.tween 2020 and 2021. The mean time b.tween lens implantation and last follow-up was 5.3 years (min. 1 year, max. 10 years). Excluded were patients with age-related macular degeneration or amb.yopia. Patients with a foreign lens implanted into the second eye were included in a separate control group. Corrected distance (CDVA) and uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) at 5 m, and corrected near (CNVA) and uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA) at 40 cm were assessed. Furthermore, the postoperative spherical equivalent (SE), the dependence on spectacles and the occurrence of optical phenomena were evaluated. Results: The final study cohort consists of 65 patients with 119 implanted AIOLs. Significantly b.tter visual results were ob.ained in b.th postoperative follow-ups compared with the preoperative results. The mean values of the last follow-up for the UNVA, CNVA, UDVA, and CDVA were 0.107 ± 0.10;0.039 ± 0.08;0.097 ± 0.11;and 0.040 ± 0.09 logMAR, respectively. Visual outcomes remained on a high level for up to 10 years and showed significantly b.tter results compared to the control group. Postoperative SE was significantly improved. Nearly 70% of patients were no longer dependent on glasses. Furthermore, the occurrence of disturb.ng optical phenomena was denied b. all patients. Conclusion: The results of this AIOL are particularly promising, especially since gratifying visual results could still b. measured 10 years after implantation.

Near-field enhancement of optical second harmonic generation in hyb.id gold-lithium niob.te nanostructures

Nanophotonics research has focused recently on the ab.lity of nonlinear optical processes to mediate and transform optical signals in a myriad of novel devices,including optical modulators,transducers,color filters,photodetectors,photon sources,and ultrafast optical *** inherent weakness of optical nonlinearities at smaller scales has,however,hindered the realization of efficient miniaturized devices,and strategies for enhancing b.th device efficiencies and synthesis throughput via nanoengineering remain ***,we demonstrate a novel mechanism b. which second harmonic generation,a prototypical nonlinear optical phenomenon,from individual lithium niob.te particles can b. significantly enhanced through nonradiative coupling to the localized surface plasmon resonances of emb.dded gold nanoparticles.A joint experimental and theoretical investigation of single mesoporous lithium niob.te particles coated with a dispersed layer of~10 nm diameter gold nanoparticles shows that a~32-fold enhancement of second harmonic generation can b. achieved without introducing finely tailored radiative nanoantennas to mediate photon transfer to or from the nonlinear *** work highlights the limitations of current strategies for enhancing nonlinear optical phenomena and proposes a route through which a new class of sub.avelength nonlinear optical platforms can b. designed to maximize nonlinear efficiencies through near-field energy exchange.

Formation, Propagation and Reflection of 1D Normal Shocks in Riemann Shock Tub.

The purpose of this paper is to consider 1D Riemann shock tub. to investigate the formation and propagation of compression waves leading to formation, propagation and reflection of 1D normal shocks using simplified mathematical models commonly used in the pub.ished work as well as using complete mathematical models b.sed on Conservation and b.lance Laws (Cb.) of classical continuum mechanics and constitutive theories for compressib.e viscous medium derived using entropy inequality and representation theorem. This work is aimed at resolving compression waves, the shock structure, shock formation, propagation and reflection of fully formed shocks. Evolutions ob.ained from the mathematical models always satisfy differentiab.lity requirements in space and time dictated b. the highest order of the derivatives of the dependent variab.es in the mathematical models investigated. All solutions reported in this paper including b.undary conditions and initial conditions are always analytic. Solutions of the mathematical models are ob.ained using the space-time finite element method in which the space-time integral forms are space-time variationally consistent ensuring unconditionally stab.e computations during the entire evolution. Solution for a space-time strip or slab.is calculated and is time marched upon convergence to ob.ain complete evolution for the desired space-time domain, thus ensuring time accurate evolutions. The space-time local approximation over a space-time element of a space-time strip or slab.is p-version hierarchical with higher-order glob.l differentiab.lity in space and time, i.e., we consider scalar product approximation spaces in which k = (kb.1b., kb.2b.) are the order of the space in space and time and p = (pb.1b., pb.2b.) are p-levels of the approximations in space and time.
