Greater bud outgrowth of Bromus inermis than Pascopyrum smithii under multiple environmental conditions

An Efficient Smoothing and Thresholding Image Segmentation Framework with Weighted Anisotropic-lsotropicTotalVariation

In this paper,we design an efficient,multi-stage image segmentation framework that incorporates a weighted difference of anisotropic and isotropic total variation(AITV).The segmentation framework generally consists of two stages:smoothing and thresholding,thus referred to as smoothing-and-thresholding(SaT).In the first stage,a smoothed image is obtained by an AITV-regularized Mumford-Shah(MS)model,which can be solved efficiently by the alternating direction method of multipliers(ADMMs)with a closed-form solution of a proximal operator of the l_(1)-αl_(2) *** convergence of the ADMM algorithm is *** the second stage,we threshold the smoothed image by K-means clustering to obtain the final segmentation *** experiments demonstrate that the proposed segmentation framework is versatile for both grayscale and color images,effcient in producing high-quality segmentation results within a few seconds,and robust to input images that are corrupted with noise,blur,or *** compare the AITV method with its original convex TV and nonconvex TVP(Olitative and quantitative advantages of our proposed method.

Disturbance cue communication is shaped by emitter diet and receiver background risk in Trinidadian guppies

In animal communication systems,individuals that detect a cue(i.e.,“receivers”)are often influenced by characteristics of the cue *** instance,in many species,receivers avoid chemical cues that are released by emitters experiencing *** chemical“disturbance cues”appear to benefit receivers by warning them about nearby danger,such as a predator’s *** the active ingredients in disturbance cues have been largely unexplored,by-products of metabolized protein are thought to play a role for some *** so,the content(quality)and volume(quantity)of the emitter’s diet should affect their disturbance cues,thus altering how receivers perceive the cues and *** Poecilia reticulata are a species known to discriminate among disturbance cues from different types of donors,but dietary variation has yet to be *** this study,we found evidence that diet quality and quantity can affect disturbance cues released by guppy emitters(i.e.,experimental“donors”).Receivers discriminated between donor cue treatments,responding more strongly to cues from donors fed a protein-rich bloodworm diet(Experiment 1),as well as an overall larger diet(Experiment 2).We also found that receivers exposed to higher background risk were more sensitive to disturbance cue variation,with the strongest avoidance responses displayed by high-risk receivers toward disturbance cues from donors fed the high-quality ***,diet,and perhaps protein specifically,affects either the concentration or composition of disturbance cues released by *** variation may be important in information signaling in social species like the guppy.

Physics-based,data-driven approach for predicting natural ventilation of residential high-rise buildings

Natural ventilation is particularly important for residential high-rise buildings as it maintains indoor human comfort without incurring the energy demands that air-conditioning *** improve a building’s natural ventilation,it is essential to develop models to understand the relationship between wind flow characteristics and the building's *** more effort is still needed for developing such reliable,accurate,and computationally economical models instead of currently the most popular physics-based models such as computational fluid dynamics(CFD)*** paper,therefore,presents a novel model developed based on physics-based modelling and a data-driven approach to evaluate natural ventilation in residential high-rise *** model first uses CFD to simulate wind pressures on the exterior surfaces of a high-rise *** the surface pressures have been obtained,multizone modelling is used to predict the air change per hour(ACH)for different flats in various ***-driven prediction models are then developed using data from the simulation and deep neural networks that are based on mean absolute error,mean absolute percentage error,and a fusion algorithm *** data-driven models are used to predict the ACH of 25 *** results from multizone modelling and data-driven modelling are *** results imply a high accuracy of the data-driven prediction in comparison with physics-based *** fusion algorithm-based neural network performs best,achieving 96%accuracy,which is the highest of all models *** study contributes a more efficient and robust method for predicting wind-induced natural *** findings describe the relationship between building design(e.g.,plan layout),distribution of surface pressure,and the resulting ACH,which serve to improve the practical design of sustainable buildings.

Neuroimaging of inflammation in alcohol use disorder: a review

Alcohol use disorder(AUD) is a global health concern associated with several *** health problems related to AUD, such as cognitive deficits, have been linked to *** use has been associated with changes in neuroimmune activity, although current literature has yielded mixed results. For example, markers of gliosis, including translocator protein 18-kDa(TSPO), proinflammatory cytokines, glutamate(Glu), and myo-inositol(mI), are disrupted in the alcohol-dependent brain. Further, neuroinflammatory-related phenomena including membrane turnover, blood brain barrier(BBB) permeability, and adenosine release have also shown alterations in AUD. However, current literature remains inconclusive about the directionality of these changes. Both in vivo and in vitro studies have provided insight on the relationship between alcohol use and neuroinflammatory processes, suggesting considerable treatment potential for alcohol use disorder and its inflammatory comorbidities. Here, we review current neuroimaging literature assessing the impacts of alcohol use on neuroimmune activity in the brain.

ITERATIVE l1 MINIMIZATION FOR NON-CONVEX COMPRESSED SENSING

An algorithmic framework, based on the difference of convex functions algorithm （D- CA）, is proposed for minimizing a class of concave sparse metrics for compressed sensing problems. The resulting algorithm iterates a sequence ofl1 minimization problems. An exact sparse recovery theory is established to show that the proposed framework always improves on the basis pursuit （l1 minimization） and inherits robustness from it. Numerical examples on success rates of sparse solution recovery illustrate further that, unlike most existing non-convex compressed sensing solvers in the literature, our method always out- performs basis pursuit, no matter how ill-conditioned the measurement matrix is. Moreover, the iterative l1 （Ill） algorithm lead by a wide margin the state-of-the-art algorithms on l1/2 and logarithimic minimizations in the strongly coherent （highly ill-conditioned） regime, despite the same objective functions. last but not least, in the application of magnetic resonance imaging （MRI）, Il1 algorithm easily recovers the phantom image with just 7 line projections.

It is known that a distance-regular graph with valency k at least three admits at most two Qpolynomial structures. We show that all distance-regular graphs with diameter four and valency at least three admitting two Q-polynomial structures are either dual bipartite or almost dual bipartite. By the work of Dickie(1995) this implies that any distance-regular graph with diameter d at least four and valency at least three admitting two Q-polynomial structures is, provided it is not a Hadamard graph, either the cube H(d, 2)with d even, the half cube 1/2H(2d + 1, 2), the folded cube?H(2d + 1, 2), or the dual polar graph on [2A2d-1(q)]with q 2 a prime power.

Transplacental induction of fatty acid oxidation in term fetal pigs by the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha agonist clofibrate

Background： To induce peroxisomal proliferator-activated receptor α（PPARα） expression and increase milk fat utilization in pigs at birth, the effect of maternal feeding of the PPARα agonist, clofibrate（2-（4-chlorophenoxy）-2-methyl-propanoic acid, ethyl ester）, on fatty acid oxidation was examined at ful-term delivery（0 h） and 24 h after delivery in this *** group of pigs（n = 10） was delivered from pregnant sows fed a commercial diet with or without 0.8% clofibrate for the last 7 d of gestation. Blood samples were col ected from the utero-ovarian artery of the sows and the umbilical cords of the pigs as they were removed from the sows by C-section on day 113 of ***： HPlC analysis identified that clofibric acid was present in the plasma of the clofibrate-fed sow（~4.2 μg/m l）and its offspring（~1.5 μg/m l）. Furthermore, the maternal-fed clofibrate had no impact on the liver weight of the pigs at 0 h and 24 h, but hepatic fatty acid oxidation examined in fresh homogenates showed that clofibrate increased（P 〈 0.01）^14C-accumulation in CO2 and acid soluble products 2.9-fold from [1-^14C]-oleic acid and 1.6-fold from[1-^14C]-lignoceric acid respectively. Correspondingly, clofibrate increased fetal hepatic carnitine palmitoyltransferase（CPT）and acyl-Co A oxidase（ACO） activities by 36% and 42% over controls（P 〈 0.036）. The m RNA abundance of CPT I was 20-fold higher in pigs exposed to clofibrate（P 〈 0.0001） but no differences were detected for ACO and PPARα m RNA between the two ***： These data demonstrate that dietary clofibrate is absorbed by the sow, crosses the placental membrane, and enters fetal circulation to induce hepatic fatty acid oxidation by increasing the CPT and ACO activities of the newborn.
