A stable one-dimensional system in an orthorhombic α-V2o5 nanowires monocrystalline structure was obtained by a solvothermal method from a polymorphic V2o5 structure. The starting material was firstly submitted to acid hydrolysis in H2o2 followed by a solvothermal treatment. The outcome of this procedure, a metastable phase of the one-dimensional system V10o24·12H2o/V3o7·H2o, was subsequently reoxidized by controlled heating in an open air system. The final product was an orange crystalline solid mainly formed by monocrystalline nanowires of α-V2o5 having lengths of tens of micrometers and widths of about 75 nm with a preferential [200] growth direction. It was found that the pH value of the initial solution plays an important role in the formation of the crystalline phase in the final products. Characterization was performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). This study offers an alternate route for the synthesis of vanadium oxides and related compounds.

MMT （Methadone maintenance treatment） is an effective way to treat opioid dependence. In Portugal, an MMT program has been available in pharmacies since January 1998, when a formal agreement was signed by the IDT, I.P. （Institute on Drugs and Drug Addiction）, the PPS （Portuguese Pharmaceutical Society）, and the AnF （national Association of Pharmacies）. In January 2004, the InFARMED （national Authority of Medicine and Health Products） became a partner of the program. The possibility of continuing the treatment at a community pharmacy was restricted to patients receiving a stabilized dose of methadone at IDT, I.P. treatment centers. Pharmacists joining the MMT were given mandatory training. Patients on the MMT program received daily doses of methadone solution under directly observed therapy, and were followed up by trained pharmacists. From January 1998 to January 2013, 3,090 patients underwent MMT in Portuguese community pharmacies. The delivery of MMT at community pharmacy level is feasible. This strategy improves access and adherence to methadone treatment, thus helping to reduce the use of illegal opioids. Community pharmacists fully demonstrated their ability to perform extended roles in public health and harm-reduction strategies. Interaction and close cooperation between the different health professionals and organizations involved were crucial to achieve adequate support to the patients.

Understanding the factors shaping species＇ distributions is a key longstanding topic in ecology with unresolved issues. The aims were to test whether the relative contribution of abiotic factors that set the geographical range of freshwater fish species may vary spatially and/or may depend on the geographical extent that is being considered. The relative contribution of factors, to discriminate between the conditions prevailing in the area where the species is present and those existing in the considered extent, was estimated with the instability index included in the R pack- age SPEDInstabR. We used 3 different extent sizes： 1） each river basin where the species is present （local）; 2） all river basins where the species is present （regional）; and 3） the whole Earth （global）. We used a data set of 16,543 freshwater fish species with a total of 845,764 geographical records, together with bioclimatic and topographic variables. Factors associated with tempera- ture and altitude show the highest relative contribution to explain the distribution of freshwater fishes at the smaller considered extent. Altitude and a mix of factors associated with temperature and precipitation were more important when using the regional extent. Factors associated with precipitation show the highest contribution when using the global extent. There was also spatial variability in the importance of factors, both between species and within species and from region to region. Factors associated with precipitation show a clear latitudinal trend of decreasing in importance toward the equator.

The blue agave (Agave tequilana Weber variety azul) is a species that is widely used to produce tequila. For this reason, in the last decade, large extensions of terrain have been established for its cultivation. However, much of this land has been abandoned in a short time because at the beginning it was not known that at least six years were needed before the agave could be harvested. However, when the growers wanted to reintegrate some of these crops into the productive process, their exact age and the cultural activities needed for harvesting the agave were unknown because information regarding its vegetative development relative to its age was lacking. The hypothesis of this work was: If the morphological properties reflect the development state of the population individuals, then the properties height, basal area, rosette diameter, the north, south, east and west leaf, leaves number and foliar verticil will help to characterize the age categories in Agave tequilana Weber variety azul population under cultivated conditions. To this end, six plots with plants of different ages (one to six years) were selected in the municipality of Llera, Tamaulipas, Mexico. In each plot, 60 individuals were selected at random, and their morphological properties (height, basal area, rosette diameter, northern leaf, southern leaf, eastern leaf, western leaf;number of leaves and leaf whorl) were measured. With these data, a principal component analysis was performed to determine which of these properties explains the most variation of the data. The results indicate that height and basal area are the properties that are most closely associated with plant age. It is also for the first time demonstrated that harvest time can be reduced by one or two years, which favors producers economically because it could generate savings in production costs.

Introduction: Diabetes is a disease characterized by an increase in blood glucose due to disorders in insulin production, this disease is widely distributed throughout the world. objective: to review and systematize the general information on diabetes, as well as the traditional treatments and the findings on kombucha as an alternative method. Method: the information retrieval technique or literature review was used on the topics of diabetes, allopathic methods, kombucha, preparation procedures, chemical and microbiological components and pharmacological effects of the drink. Results: Various sources of information were found that explain the definition of diabetes and its classification. it commonly presents in four ways depending on the signs, the common ones being type 1, associated with destruction of the β cells of the pancreas and mainly affects minors, and type 2, which is related to genetic and environmental problems and It affects people over 18 years of age, and less frequently gestational diabetes and MoDY type. Traditional drugs such as sulfonylureas, glinides and biguanides, thiazolidinediones and α-glucosidase inhibitors are used to control this disease, or alternative therapies are used such as kombucha, a fermented beverage that has its origins in China and is spread worldwide by its beneficial effects in chronic degenerative diseases such as diabetes, due to its chemical and microbiological content. Conclusion: The information establishes important data on kombucha as one of the complementary alternatives for the treatment of diabetes.

objective: to evaluate the protective effect of kombucha and its components not polar, in pancreas of diabetic rats treated with streptozotocin. Material and methods: ninety-six male Wistar rats of 120 to 170 g of PC were used;four groups of 24 animals were formed: control (GC), control treatment (GCTx), kombucha treatment (GTxK) and treatment with non-polar components of kombucha (GTxCnP). Diabetes was induced in the last three groups with an intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin at a dose of 65 mg/kg BW. At the same time, treatment was started in the different groups;GC and GCTx groups were administered, orally, 1 ml of sterile saline solution;to the GTxK group 324 mg/kg of kombucha;and to GTxCnP 0.006 mg/kg of the non-polar components. For the histopathological study, pancreas samples were obtained on days 1, 7, 14 and 21 and fixed in formalin. They were processed with the histological technique, 5-micron-thick sections were made and stained with the hematoxylin-eosin technique. Finally, the number of islets of Langerhans per field observed with the 10x objective was quantified. The results were subjected to a one-way analysis of variance and Tukey’s test (p Results: Significant changes in the number of islets were observed in histological sections of the pancreas. The groups treated with streptozotocin showed a significant decrease in the number of islets 7 days after starting treatment;Likewise, their number was lower in the GCTx group compared to the GTxK and GTxCnP groups (p ≤ 0.05). At 14 and 21 days, the lowest number of islets was maintained, although only in the GCTx and GTxK groups (p ≤ 0.05). Streptozotocin is a drug that can be used in rats to induce an experimental model of diabetes with an effect that can last up to 21 days. Conclusions: This fermented beverage and its non-polar components can be a complementary treatment alternative for diabetes mellitus, since it prevents further damage to the β cells of the pancreas and the Islets of Langerh

We tackle the problem of minimum reinforcement in concre te using Genetic Algorithms (GAs), the searching procedures based on the fundamental evolutionary principle: better individuals survive and reproduce more often than other individuals [1]. GAs work very well on mixed (continuous and discrete) combinatorial problems;they are less susceptible to getting "stuck" at local optima than other gradient search methods. But they nevertheless tend to be computationally expensive, since a "pool" of samples with variations is needed to start and evolve the searching pr ocess. If the fitness value has to be fed by a finite element method calculation, thousands or millions of calculations are needed before a near-optimum solution can be finally found;and this would render the usage unrealistic. In particular, in dealing with optimization in lightly-reinforced concrete beams, the peak and near post-peak in the load-displacement and its neighborhood are known to b e controlled by three factors: 1) the steel ratio;2) the bond-slip properties;and 3) the steel cover [2]. But how to adjust these three factors to obtain a global ductile response of the structure is only by trial-and-error both numerically and experimentally. In this paper, we adopt a cohesive crack model developed by Ruiz [3], which deals with the propagation of a cohesive crack crossing a reinforcement layer in a beam made out of a cohesive matrix and lightly reinforced with steel bars. This model accounts for the aforementioned three factors, but above all, it gives a fast numerical solution, which makes the use of GAs in this particular problem feasible. Specifically, the case of a reinforced prismatic beam loaded at three points is modeled. Sixty-four Holstein steers (247 ± 4 kg) were used in a 70-d experiment to evaluate the effects of partial replacement of steam flake corn (SFC) with extruded corn meal (EC) on growth performance and dietary net energy. Treatments consisted of a steam flaked corn-based finishing diet containing 0%, 10%, 20%, or 30% EC, where EC replaced 0%, 15%, 30%, or 45% of SFC (DM basis). Replacement of SFC with increasing levels of EC did not affect (P > 0.10) ADG, DMI, and gain efficiency. When EC replaced 15% to 30% of SFC, observed dietary nE was 99% of expected. Whereas, when EC replaced 45% of SFC, observed dietary nE was 94% of expected. Four Holstein steers (210 ± 7 kg) with cannulas in the rumen and proximal duodenum were used in a 4 × 4 Latin square experiment to evaluate treatment effects on characteristics of digestion. Partial replacement of SFC with EC did not affect (P > 0.10) flow of undegraded feed n and microbial n and to the small intestine, and ruminal microbial n efficiency (g microbial n/kg oM fermented). Likewise, there were no treatment effects (P > 0.10) on ruminal digestion of oM, nDF, starch and feed n. As expected, total tract digestion of starch for all treatments exceeded 99%. However, partial replacement of SFC with EC decreased total tract digestion of DM and oM (linear effect, P = 0.02), and dietary DE (linear effect, P = 0.03). These effects were more pronounced where EC replaced 45% of SFC. Partial replacement of SFC with EC did not affect (P > 0.10) ruminal pH, total VFA concentration, molar proportions of acetate, propionate, and butyrate, and estimated methane production. It is concluded that partial replacement of SFC with EC does not have a beneficial effect on ruminal microbial efficiency and digestive function. The feeding value of extruded corn for feedlot cattle is comparable to that of steam flaked corn provided the inclusion rate does not exceed 20% of diet dry matter.

novel approaches for high contrast, deep tissue, in vivo fluorescence biomedical imaging are based on infrared-emitting nanoparticles working in the so-called second biological window （1,000-1,400 nm）. This allows for the acquisition of high resolution, deep tissue images due to the partial transparency of tissues in this particular spectral range. In addition, the optical excitation with low energy （infrared） photons also leads to a drastic reduction in the contribution of autofluorescence to the in vivo image. nevertheless, as is demonstrated here, working solely in this biological window does not ensure a complete removal of autofluorescence as the specimens diet shows a remarkable infrared fluorescence that extends up to 1,100 nm. In this work, we show how the 1,340 nm emission band of nd3. ions embedded in SrF2 nanoparticles can be used to produce autofluorescence free, high contrast in vivo fluorescence images. It is also dem- onstrated that the complete removal of the food-related infrared autofluorescence is imperative for the development of reliable biodistribution studies.
