The present pandemic has posed a crisis to the economy of the world and the health ***,the race to expand research to understand some good molecular targets for vaccine and therapeutic development for SARS-CoV-2 is *** newly discovered coronavirus 2019(COVID-19)is a positive sense,single-stranded RNA,and enveloped virus,assigned to the beta CoV *** virus(SARS-CoV-2)is more infectious than the previously detected coronaviruses(MERS and SARS).Findings from many studies have revealed that S protein and RdRp are good targets for drug repositioning,novel therapeutic development(antibodies and small molecule drugs),and vaccine *** such as chloroquine,convalescent plasma,monoclonal antibodies,spike binding peptides,and small molecules could alter the ability of S protein to bind to the ACE-2 receptor,and drugs such as remdesivir(targeting SARS-CoV-2 RdRp),favipir,and emetine could prevent SASR-CoV-2 RNA *** novel vaccines such as mRNA1273(Moderna),3LNP-mRNAs(Pfizer/BioNTech),and ChAdOx1-S(University of Oxford/Astra Zeneca)targeting S protein have proven to be effective in combating the present *** exploration of the potential of S protein and RdRp is crucial in fighting the present pandemic.

Dengue fever,caused by the dengue virus(DENV),poses a significant public health challenge globally,with Nigeria experiencing sporadic outbreaks.A clear understanding of the dengue burden has not been achieved in Nigeria,just as in other African *** the epidemiology and burden of dengue fever is essential for effective prevention and control *** paper examines the recent dengue outbreaks in northern Nigeria,particularly in Sokoto state,and evaluates the recommended Takeda dengue vaccine(TDV)along with future prevention *** limited surveillance and underreporting,dengue fever is endemic in Nigeria(with over 5 million cases and 5000 dengue-related deaths in 2023),with recent outbreaks indicating a growing *** TDV,a live attenuated tetravalent vaccine,has shown promise in preventing dengue fever,but challenges such as vaccine acceptance and access-ibility need to be *** urbanization contributes to the disease's spread,which is influenced by factors such as population density,cultural beliefs,water storage practices,hygiene,and water supply *** prevention strategies must focus on government intervention,community practices,and innovative vector control measures to mitigate the spread of DENV in *** study will serve as a valuable reference for policy-makers,researchers,and clinicians in the management and control of DENV in Nigeria and Africa as a whole.

Prevalence and risk factors associated with malaria infection among pregnant women in a semi-urban community of north-western Nigeria

Background:Malaria during pregnancy remains a serious public health problem,with substantial risks for the mother,her foetus and the *** aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of malaria and possible risk factors for malaria infection among pregnant women in a semi-urban area in north-western *** women are among the most susceptible to malaria *** of their malaria infection status is an important yardstick to measure the effectiveness of any malaria control ***:We conducted a cross sectional study in the semi-urban area of Argungu,Kebbi State *** hundred and fifty five pregnant women were included in the study after informed verbal consent was *** each participant,the socio-demographic profile,stage of pregnancy and attitude to the use of insecticide-treated nets(ITNs)were investigated using a *** blood samples were collected and thick blood smears were prepared and stained with Giemsa stains to check for malaria *** associations between age,education level and use of ITNs with occurrence of malaria infection during pregnancy were analysed using the chi-square ***:One hundred and six(41.6%)out of 255 pregnant women were infected with malaria parasites,with a mean parasite density of 800 parasitesμl−*** was found that prevalence and parasite density decreased as age *** chi-square test indicated that a lack of education and non-usage of ITNs were significantly associated with malaria ***:Malaria is still a major public health issue among pregnant women mainly due to illiteracy and non-compliance to using *** awareness about malaria preventive measures and early attendance of antenatal care services will help to reduce malaria and,consequently,its associated morbidities and mortalities.

Incidence and Risk Factors to Neonatal Jaundice in Jalingo, Taraba State

This cross-sectional study was aimed to determine the incidence and the significant risk factors to neonatal jaundice in FMC, Jalingo. Four hundred and thirty three neonates admitted to special baby care unit (SBCU) FMC, Jalingo with their mothers were surveyed. Data were collected through a data extraction format looking on the medical records of the neonates (from 1st January, 2021 to 31st August, 2021) and interviewing the mothers. Data were transferred to an Excel data sheet and results were summarized by frequencies and percentages (categorical variables). Logistic regression analysis was used to determine the strength of the risk factors to neonatal jaundice while the significance was tested at p-value ≤ 0.05. The findings revealed that the incidence of neonatal jaundice in FMC Jalingo was 40.18% while the significant risk factors were age group 41 - 50 years (I = 15.01%, OR: 2.970 at 95% CI: 1.566 - 5.634, p = 0.000), spontaneous vaginal delivery (I = 18.01%, OR: 1.382 at 95% CI: 0.940 - 2.033, p = 0.000), premature rupture of membrane (I = 24.94%, OR at: 2.252 at 95% CI: 1.520 - 3.337, p = 0.000), hypertension in pregnancy (I = 21.02%, OR: 1.831 at 95% CI: 1.240 - 2.703, p = 0.002). Others were breech fetal presentation (I = 23.33%, OR: 2.689 at 95% CI: 1.809 - 3.995, p = 0.000), birth asphyxia (I = 22.40%, OR: 3.469 at 95% CI: 2.3105.210, p = 0.000), significant bruising (I = 22.86%, OR: 1.705 at 95% CI: 1.157 - 2.513, p = 0.007), neonatal sepsis (I = 21.02%, OR: 1.688 at 95% CI: 1.145 - 2.488, p = 0.008) and congenital hemolytic anemia (I = 21.71%, OR: 1.723 at 95% CI: 1.169 - 2.540, p = 0.006). Therefore, the need for all concerned to ensure the incidence is reduced and the risk factors identified early and tackled.

Synthesis and Characterisation of Colorants Derived from 1,4-Diamino Anthraquinone Polyamides

In this study, the polycondensation products of a diamine anthraquinone (1,4-diamino anthraquinone) and some aliphatic diacids with different methylene numbers were synthesised. Their UV-visible spectroscopy and thermal properties were then characterised. The synthesis was achieved by reacting equimolar solutions of the amine and the acid halides. The structure and thermal properties of the products were characterised. FT-IR Spectra of all the three products revealed the formation of amide due to the presence of strong bands at 1565 and 3390 cm?1 assignable to C=O stretching and N-H vibrations. Differential Scanning Calorimetry revealed high melting exotherms for the products. Thermogravimetry revealed moderate thermal stabilities for Poly NAM and Poly NAS and low thermal stability for Poly NAA which indicated 5.9%, 7.1% and 61.2% weight losses at 285℃, 285℃ and 374℃ for the three products respectively. The wavelengths of maximum absorbance for the dye samples are 601.5, 591 and 589 nm respectively with absorptivity coefficients (a1cm1% ) of 11640000, 11610000 and 11560000 respectively.

Characterization of Amylase from Some Aspergillus and Bacillus Species Associated with Cassava Waste Peels

Cassava peels are generated as waste on soils during cassava processing in many tropical countries. This work set out to isolate some microorganisms associated with cassava peel degradation and characterize amylase enzymes responsible for the degradation under some physiological conditions. A total of 30 bacteria was isolated from the peels with Bacillus species occurring the most (46.5%) and Enterobacter species (13.3%) being the next. Frequencies of fungal isolations was Rhizopus sp. (35%);Aspergillus niger (25%);Aspegillus flavus (20%) and Penicillium species (20%). Bacillus cereus, Bacillus substilis Bacillus pumillus, Aspergillus niger and Apergillus flavus were selected and screened for their abilities to produce amylase. Amylase activity was highest at day 4 for B. substilis (39.4 units/ml) and A. flavus (66.1 units/ml);at day 3 for B. cereus (55.6 units/ml) and A. niger (44.6 units/ ml). While maximum amylase activity was obtained at day 6 for B. pumilus (80.2 units/ml). Optimum pH for amylases from the two fungal isolate was 6.0 (A. niger = 53.5 units/ml and A. flavus = 65.4 units/ml). While optimum pH for *** (51.7 units/ ml) and B. pumilus (44.6 units/ml) was 6.5 and for B. substilis (56.1 units/ml) at pH 7.0. Amylase activities increased from 20°C to 40°C for amylase from Bacillus sp. and 20°C to 50°C for amylase from the Aspergillus sp. after which there was a decline in activities as temperature increased to 80°C. Effect of heating duration (at 70°C for 5 minutes) on the amylase showed that A. niger has the highest activity of 127 units/ml. Effect of substrate concentration on amylase activity showed that amylase form A. flavus had the highest activity of 72.2 units/ml at 0.4% substrate concentration. The implications of the findings were discussed.

Epispadias in a Child with Intact Prepuce: A Rare Congenital Abnormality

Epispadias is a rare genitourinary malformation, more so is epispadias with intact prepuce. Incidence of epispadias with intact prepuce is not known however, there are few case reports and a case series. We present a 5-year-old boy brought to our facility by his parent for circumcision. Further evaluation revealed a short penis with broad base and intact prepuce. The preputial slit was dorsally oriented. On retracting the prepuce, there was corona epispadias with wide and healthy urethral plate. No meatal stenosis or chordee noticed. Other findings were normal. He had epispadias repair. The postoperative period was uneventful. Three months after operation, the prepuce was easily retractable over the penis and the penis was cosmetically acceptable.
