Operational Implementation of the ATOVS Processing Procedure in KMA and Its Validation

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) has processed the data from the advanced TOVS (ATOVS) onboard NOAA-16 satellite since May 2001. The operational production utilizes the AAPP (ATOVS and AVHRR Processing Package) of EUMETSAT and IAPP (International ATOVS Processing Package) of the University of Wisconsin. For the initial guess profiles, the predicted fields (usually 6 to 12 hour forecasted fields) from the global aviation model of NOAA/NCEP are used. The average number of profiles retrieved from the ATOVS data is about 1,300 for each morning and afternoon orbit at about 18 and 06 UTC, respectively. The retrieved temperature and dew point temperatures are provided to forecasters in real time and used for initialization of prediction models. With the advanced microwave sensor (AMSU; Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit), accuracy of the ATOVS products is expected to be better than that of the TOVS products, especially in cloudy conditions. Indeed, the preliminary results from a validation study with the collocated radiosonde data during a 8-month period, from May to December 2001, for the East Asia region show an improved accuracy of the ATOVS products for cloudy skies versus the TOVS, especially for higher altitudes. The RMS (Root Mean Square) difference between the ATOVS products and radiosonde data is about 1.3°C for both clear and cloudy conditions, except for near the ground and at higher altitudes, at around 200 hPa. There is no significant temporal variation of the error statistics at all pressure levels. In case of the water vapor mixing ratio, the largest difference is shown at lower altitudes, while the accuracy is much better for the clear sky cases than the cloudy sky cases. The bias and RMSE at lower altitudes is about 0.557 g kg−1 and 2.5 g kg−1 and decrease significantly with increasing altitude.

Lactic acid is an important organic acid that is widely used in the food,pharmaceutical,and cosmetic *** acid was produced from coffee ground waste which contains fermentable sugars and is increasingly generated from our daily dietary *** 114 strains of Lactobacillus species,Lactobacillus rhamnosus ATCC 10863 was selected for the production of lactic acid from coffee ground *** alkali pretreatment and saccharification,cellulose and hemicellulose in coffee ground waste were converted into fermentable *** experiments were conducted at various alkali solution,concentrations,and *** pretreatment with 35 g/L of KOH at 121oC for 60 min,the highest concentration of fermentable sugars was *** optimum concentration of Viscozyme L was 2%when saccharification was proceeded at 55oC for 7 *** productivity of lactic acid fermentation was the highest(0.59 g/L/h)at 100 g of coffee ground waste(1x concentration),whereas the lactic acid concentration was the highest at 600 g of coffee ground waste(6x concentration).As the concentration of coffee ground increased,the lactic acid concentration was also increased,however,the amount was not proportional to the coffee ground waste *** this study,it was found that coffee ground waste could be used as a culture medium for Lactobacillus rhamnosus ATCC 10863 through pretreatment and saccharification for the production of lactic acid.

Successful outcome following resection of a pancreatic liposarcoma with solitary metastasis

Liposarcomas are rare soft tissue tumors, commonly affecting the lower limbs and less commonly the retroperitoneum. Although other organs can be affected,the pancreas is one of the rarest, and metastasis at presentation has never been reported. We describe the case of a 76-year-old gentleman presenting with abdominal pain and an abdominal mass. Imaging confirmed a primary tumor in the body and tail of the pancreas, with a metastatic deposit in the mesentery adjacent to the second part of the duodenum. Biopsy confirmed a liposarcoma, and subsequently a complete surgical excision was achieved. He then received adjuvant radiotherapy and has remained disease free for the next 26 mo.

Are age, anthropometry and components of metabolic syndrome-risk factors interrelated with lower urinary tract symptoms in patients with erectile dysfunction？ A prospective study

Aim： To evaluate the effects of metabolic profiles on lower urinary tract symptoms （LUTS） in men with erectile dysfunction （ED）. Methods： A total of 75 impotent men aged 25-75 years old （mean 58.1 years） were included in the study on a prospective basis. Patients were evaluated with a complete history, physical examination, anthropometry and metabolic profiles. LUTS were assessed using the International Prostate Symptom Score （IPSS）. Results： Overall, there was no correlation between the IPSS and continuous parameters. However, when continuous variables were categorized, some parameters were significantly associated with LUTS. Patients with triglyceride level of 150 mg/dL or higher had more severe symptoms than those with tiglyceride levels less than 150 mg/dL （19.4±2.4 vs. 14.3±1.1, P = 0.033）. When 40 mg/dL was chosen as the high-density lipoprotein （HDL）-cholesterol cut-off level, the IPSS was significantly different between the two groups divided by 40 mg/dL （19.4±2.6 for HDL-cholesterol 〈 40 mg/dL vs. 14.4±1.0 for HDL-cholesterol 2 40 mg/dL, P = 0.042）. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve （AUROCC） of triglyceride was 65.7% （95% confidence interval [CI], 52.6%-82.3%; P = 0.034） for severe LUTS. However, the AUROCC for ＇HDL-cholesterol＇ was not significant （area, 65.4%; 95% CI, 48.2%-82.7%; P = 0.062）. No other factors were determined to be significant in this regard. Conclusion： The results of the present study indicate that some metabolic profiles might influence LUTS in men with ED.

Genome-wide markers for seed yield and disease resistance in perennial ryegrass

The market success of perennial ryegrass(Lolium perenne L.) cultivars depends on sufficient seed production, as they are propagated by seed. However, breeding for high quality forage production reduces seed yield, and breaking the negative correlation would help to overcome the problem. The foliar disease crown rust is another factor affecting reproductive capacity and thereby seed yield. We evaluated seed yield-related traits and resistance to crown rust in a collection of commercial cultivars and ecotypes of perennial ryegrass and identified genome-wide markers associated with the traits. The study revealed high variation between the ecotype and cultivar groups as well as between years. A genome-wide association study identified 17 DNA single-nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs) of which eight were associated with crown rust and nine with flag-leaf length. The SNP markers were located within or near predicted genes functioning in defense against pathogens. The identified genes are strong candidates for a further in-depth functional study to continue unravel determination of leaf architecture and crown rust resistance in perennial ryegrass.

Combined transplantation of GDAs^(BMP) and hr-decorin in spinal cord contusion repair

Following spinal cord injury, astrocyte proliferation and scar formation are the main factors inhibiting the regeneration and growth of spinal cord axons. Recombinant decorin suppresses inflammatory reactions, inhibits glial scar formation, and promotes axonal growth. Rat models of T8 spinal cord contusion were created with the NYU impactor and these models were subjected to combined transplantation of bone morphogenetic protein-4-induced glial-restricted precursor-derived astro- cytes and human recombinant decorin transplantation. At 28 days after spinal cord contusion, dou- ble-immunofluorescent histochemistry revealed that combined transplantation inhibited the early in- flammatory response in injured rats. Furthermore, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, which was se- creted by transplanted cells, protected injured axons. The combined transplantation promoted ax- onal regeneration and growth of injured motor and sensory neurons by inhibiting astrocyte prolif- eration and glial scar formation, with astrocytes forming a linear arrangement in the contused spinal cord, thus providing axonal regeneration channels.

AIM:To investigate the efficacy of cap-fitted colonoscopy(CFC) with regard to cecal intubation ***:Two hundred and ninety-five patients undergoing screening colonoscopy at Gospel Hospital,Kosin University College of Medicine were enrolled in this randomized controlled trial between january and December *** were conducted by a single *** characteristics including age,sex,body mass index,history of abdominal surgery,quality of preparation,and the presence of diverticulosis were ***:One hundred and fifty patients were allocated into a CFC group and 145 into a non-CFC(NCF) *** intubations were achieved in all *** intubation time in the CFC group was significantly shorter than in the NCF group for specific conditions:age ≥ 60 years,prior abdominal surgery,and poor bowel *** number of detected adenomas was higher in the CFC group than in the NCF group(P = 0.040).CONCLUSION:CFC facilitated shortening of the cecal intubation time in difficult cases,and was more sensitive for detecting adenomas than was NCF.

Gallbladder tuberculosis: False-positive PET diagnosis of gallbladder cancer

Gallbladder tuberculosis (GT) is an extremely rare disease, and very few cases have been reported in the literature. The first case of GT was described in 1870 by Gaucher. A correct preoperative diagnosis of GT is unusual, and it is frequently confused with various gallbladder diseases. We present a new case of a patient who underwent surgery with the preoperative diagnosis of gallbladder cancer after a false positive positron emission tomography scan in the diagnostic work-up.
