A functional tacrolimus-releasing nerve wrap for enhancing nerve regeneration following surgical nerve repair

Axonal regeneration following surgical nerve repair is slow and often incomplete,resulting in poor functional recovery which sometimes contributes to lifelong ***,there are no FDA-approved therapies available to promote nerve *** accelerates axonal regeneration,but systemic side effects presently outweigh its potential benefits for peripheral nerve *** authors describe herein a biodegradable polyurethane-based drug delivery system for the sustained local release of tacrolimus at the nerve repair site,with suitable properties for scalable production and clinical application,aiming to promote nerve regeneration and functional recovery with minimal systemic drug *** is encapsulated into co-axially electrospun polycarbonate-urethane nanofibers to generate an implantable nerve wrap that releases therapeutic doses of bioactive tacrolimus over 31 *** and drug loading are adjustable for applications in small and large caliber nerves,and the wrap degrades within 120 days into biocompatible *** released from the nerve wrap promotes axon elongation in vitro and accelerates nerve regeneration and functional recovery in preclinical nerve repair models while off-target systemic drug exposure is reduced by 80%compared with systemic *** its surgical suitability and preclinical efficacy and safety,this system may provide a readily translatable approach to support axonal regeneration and recovery in patients undergoing nerve surgery.

Estimation of j—R Curves for Small-Sized COEC Specimens and Its Application Considering Crack-Tip Cons tr aints

The normalization method has been employed to estimate the j-resistance (j—R) curves for C-shaped outside edge-notched compression (COEC) specimens of SA-508 steel. The COEC specimens present the lowest j—R curves in comparison with other three types of specimens. Based on the j—Q—M met hod, the constraint parame ter Q determined at the mid-plane in the through-thickness direction of the specimen is used to approximately quantify the threedimensional crack-tip constraint for COEC specimens. Combining with the previous experiments on j—R curves, the constraint-coirected j—R curves for SA-508 steel specimens are given, which may be used to predict the fracture toughness of actual cracked components in structural integrity assessment.

Analysis on the velocity relationship and deceleration of long-rod penetration

The relationship between the average penetration velocity,UˉUˉ,and the initial impact velocity, V0V0,in long-rod penetration has been studied recently. Experimental and simulation results all show the linear relationship between UˉUˉ and V0V0 over a wide range of V0V0 for different combinations of rod and target materials. However, the physical essence has not been fully *** this paper, the Uˉ?V0Uˉ?V0relationship is profoundly analyzed using hydrodynamic model and Alekseevskii-Tate model. Especially, the explicitUˉ?V0Uˉ?V0 relationships are derived fromapproximate solutions of Alekseevskii-Tate model. Besides, the decelerationin long-rod penetration is discussed. The decelerationdegree is quantified by adeceleration index,α=2μˉ/(KΦjp)≈Ypρ?1/2p(ρ?1/2p+ρ?1/2t)V?20α=2μˉ/(KΦjp)≈Ypρp?1/2(ρp?1/2+ρt?1/2)V0?2, which is mostly related to the impact velocity, rod strength and rod/target densities. Thus, the state of penetration process can be identified and designed in experiments.

Approximate solutions of the Alekseevskii–Tate model of long-rod penetration

The Alekseevskii–Tate model is the most successful semi-hydrodynamic model applied to long-rod penetration into semi-infinite targets. However, due to the nonlinear nature of the equations, the rod(tail) velocity, penetration velocity, rod length, and penetration depth were obtained implicitly as a function of time and solved numerically By employing a linear approximation to the logarithmic relative rod length, we obtain two sets of explicit approximate algebraic solutions based on the implicit theoretica solution deduced from primitive equations. It is very convenient in the theoretical prediction of the Alekseevskii–Tate model to apply these simple algebraic solutions. In particular, approximate solution 1 shows good agreement with the theoretical(exact) solution, and the first-order perturbation solution obtained by walters et al.(Int. j. Impac Eng. 33:837–846, 2006) can be deemed as a special form of approximate solution 1 in high-speed penetration. Meanwhile, with constant tail velocity and penetration velocity approximate solution 2 has very simple expressions, which is applicable for the qualitative analysis of long-rod penetration. Differences among these two approximate solutions and the theoretical(exact) solution and their respective scopes of application have been discussed, and the inferences with clear physical basis have been drawn. In addition, these two solutions and the first-order perturbation solution are applied to two cases with different initial impact velocity and different penetrator/target combinations to compare with the theoretical(exact) solution. Approximate solution 1 is much closer to the theoretical solution of the Alekseevskii–Tate model than the first-order perturbation solution in both cases, whilst approximate solution 2 brings us a more intuitive understanding of quasi-steady-state penetration.

Zinc Oxide Nanostructured Biosensor for Glucose Detection

Zinc oxide （ZnO） nanocombs were fabricated by vapor phase transport, and nanorods and hierarchical nanodisk structures by aqueous thermal decomposition. Glucose biosensors were constructed using these ZnO nanostructures as supporting materials for glucose oxidase （GOx） loading. These ZnO glucose biosensors showed a high sensitivity for glucose detection and high affinity of GOx to glucose as well as the low detection limit. The results demonstrate that ZnO nanostructures have potential applications in biosensors.

Deformation kinking and highly localized nanocrystallization in metastableβ-Ti alloys using cold forging

Deformation kinking as an uncommon plastic deformation mechanism has been reported in several materials while the relevant microstructure evolution and grain refinement behavior at a large strain remain unclear so *** this study,the issue was systematically investigated by utilizing cold forging to impose severe plastic deformation(SPD)on Ti-11 V metastableβ-Ti *** is found that the formation of kink bands experiences dislocation gliding,pre-kinking and the ripening of pre-kinks in *** kink bands are subsequently thickened through the coalescence of multiple kink bands in a manner of high *** dislocation slip is developed as a dominant deformation mechanism when deformation kinking is *** resulting grain refinement involves transverse breakdown and longitudinal splitting of dislocation walls and cells,which fragment kink bands into smallβ-*** refinement of theβ-blocks is still governed by dislocation activities,and finally nanograins with a diameter of~15 nm are produced at a large strain of ***,it is revealed that nanocrystallization is highly localized inside kink bands while the outer microstructure maintains original coarse *** localized refinement characterization is ascribed to the intrinsic soft nature of kink bands,shown as low hardness in nanoindentation *** intrinsic softening of kink bands is uncovered to originate from the inner degraded dislocation density evidenced by both experimental measurement and theoretical *** findings enrich fundamental understanding of deformation kinking,and shed some light on exploring the deformation accommodation mechanisms for metal materials at large strains.

Corrosion Evolution of Reinforcing Steel in Concrete under Dry/wet Cyclic Conditions Contaminated with Chloride

The corrosion evolution of rebar in concrete was monitored by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy （EIS） under dry/wet alternated accelerated corrosion test. Four stages with different dynamic characteristics were observed during the corrosion evolution. They were passive stage, local corrosion controlled by the charge transfer step, accelerated corrosion controlled by the mass transfer step, and constant rate corrosion controlled by the mass transfer step through a barrier layer. x-ray diffraction （xRD） analysis showed that the corrosion product of rebar in mortar was composed of α-FeOOH, γ-FeOOH and Fe304. The corrosion mechanisms of all four stages were discussed and the corrosion reactions were proposed according to the corrosion product and corrosion evolution characteristics.

Spherical cavity-expansion model for penetration of reinforced-concrete targets

The feature of reinforcing bars is introduced into dynamic cavity-expansion theory. Based on the elastic-plastic response penetration model of plain (i.e., unreinforced) concrete (Forrestal and Tzou, 1997), a dynamic spherical cavity-expansion penetration model for reinforced-concrete targets is developed with consideration of the circumferential restriction effect derived from reinforcing bars in the crushed region. The theoretical solution and simplified calculation formula for the cavity radial stress in incompressible and compressible reinforced concrete are obtained by introducing a reinforcement ratio as the volume fraction of rebars in the concrete target. A damping function is presented to describe the restriction effect of a single layer of reinforcing bars on the surrounding concrete, thus establishing a model to calculate the penetration resistance of multilayer reinforced-concrete targets. Compared with test data for the penetration depth, this model considering the circumferential restriction effect produces better results compared with the existing theory.

Elastic-plastic behavior of a semicircular frame being pressed against a rigid plane

As a simplified structural model, a semicircular frame is used to study the crashworthiness behavior of an aircraft fuselage. The quasi-static large elastic-plastic deformation of a semicircular frame in the process of its being pressed against a rigid ground is analyzed. First, based on the linear elastic assumption, the quasi-static large deformation contact process of the frame can be divided into three phases, i.e., point contact, line contact and post-buckling. By means of a shooting method, the relations between the displacement and contact force as well as the distribution of bending moment in the three phases are obtained. Then, by assuming an elastic, perfectly-plastic moment-curvature relationship for the semi-circular frame, the contact process is analyzed in detail to reveal the plastic collapse mechanism, the traveling of plastic hinge and the force-displacement relationship. In order to verify the analysis, a preliminary experiment was conducted, in which two types of half rings with clamped ends were pressed by a rigid plate. In addition, a numerical simulation is also conducted by employing ABAQUS to analyze both rectangular cross-sectional beam and I-beam. Finally, the theoretical predictions are compared with the experimental results and numerical solutions, showing that the elastic-plastic analysis can predict the contact process very well.
