Impacts of 1-Aminocyclopropane-1-Carboxylic Acid as a Late Post-Bloom Thinner on Fruit Set, Yield, and Fruit Quality in “Gala” and “Fuji” Apples

A few post-bloom thinners are available for apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) and the prospects for additional thinners appear to be limited. Application of blossom thinners may present a risk of overthining in the areas where weather is less predictable. Thus, we studied the impacts of various rates of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) in three strains of “Fuji” apple and different rates of ACC and one rate of Ethrel in “Buckeye Gala” apple, when fruitlet diameter was about 20 mm, on fruit set, yield and fruit quality attributes at harvest, and return bloom in southwest Idaho in the Intermountain west region, USA. In 2013, application of Ethrel at 300 mg·L-1 did not affect fruit set, fruit weight, diameter (D), length(L), or L/D ratio 34 days after application, or yield, fruit weight, color, russet, and starch degradation pattern (SDP) at harvest, while application of ACC at 150 mg·L-1 or higher reduced fruit set by 19% to 34% in “Buckeye Gala” apple. In this cultivar, application of ACC at 350 mg·L-1 significantly increased fruit weight, diameter and length 34 days after application, and increased fruit weight, color, and SDP at harvest time. Application of ACC at all rates reduced total yield per tree in “Buckeye Gala”. Application of ACC at 300 mg·L-1 significantly reduced fruit set but applications of 150 mg·L-1 or 300 mg·L-1 ACC did not affect yield or quality attributes of “Sun Fuji” apple in Sunny Slope area in 2013. Application of ACC reduced fruit set and slightly increased fruit size in “Top Export Fuji” in 2013. Application of ACC at 600 mg·L-1 significantly reduced fruit set in “Aztec Fuji” apple in 2014. Application of ACC in a season never reduced bloom density (return bloom) of the next season. Overall, we conclude that ACC is an excellent tool as a late-season post-bloom fruit thinner and can be effective when applied

At the International Geological Congress held in Florence, Italy in August 2004 the IUGS Council approved the formation of a new Commission on Geoscience for Environmental Management. This new Commission was formed to continue IUGS activities in the environment following the closure of the IUGS Commission on Geological Sciences for Environmental Planning(COGEOENVIRONMENT) which had completed its term (refer to separate article in this issue).

Numerical study of flow and heat transfer during oscillatory blood flow in diseased arteries in presence of magnetic fields

A problem motivated by the investigation of the heat and mass transfer in the unsteady magnetohydrodynamic （MHD） flow of blood through a vessel is solved numerically when the lumen of the vessel has turned into the porous structure. The time-dependent permeability and the oscillatory suction velocity are considered. The computational results are presented graphically for the velocity, the temperature, and the concentration fields for various values of skin friction coefficients, Nusselt numbers, and Sherwood numbers. The study reveals that the flow is appreciably influenced by the presence of a magnetic field and also by the value of the Grashof number.

Software Defined Network(SDN)deals with huge data processing units which possess network ***,due to centralization behavior ensuring security in SDN is the major *** this work to ensure security,a security server has been at its aid to check the vulnerability of the networks and to keep an eye on the packet according to the screening policies.A Secure Shell Connection(SSH)is established by the security server which does a frequent inspection of the network’s *** detection and the Intrusion Detection System policies are also incorporated in the server for the effective scanning of the *** response to a suspicious log or the packets in the SDN network there is a change in the security *** the proposed work updates the security policies in accordance with the attacker mentality.

Recovery of spermatogenesis following testosterone replacement therapy or anabolic-androgenic steroid use

The use of testosterone replacement therapy （TRT） for hypogonadism continues to rise, particularly in younger men who may wish to remain fertile. Concurrently, awareness of a more pervasive use of anabolic-androgenic steroids （AAS） within the general population has been appreciated. Both TRT and AAS can suppress the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal （HPG） axis resulting in diminution of spermatogenesis. Therefore, it is important that clinicians recognize previous TRT or AAS use in patients presenting for infertility treatment. Cessation of TRT or AAS use may result in spontaneous recovery of normal spermatogenesis in a reasonable number of patients if allowed sufficient time for recovery. However, some patients may not recover normal spermatogenesis or tolerate waiting for spontaneous recovery. In such cases, clinicians must be aware of the pathophysiologic derangements of the HPG axis related to TRT or AAS use and the pharmacologic agents available to reverse them. The available agents include injectable gonadotropins, selective estrogen receptor modulators, and aromatase inhibitors, but their off-label use is poorly described in the literature, potentially creating a knowledge gap for the clinician. Reviewing their use clinically for the treatment of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and other HPG axis abnormalities can familiarize the clinician with the manner in which they can be used to recover spermatogenesis after TRT or AAS use.

Physiologic magnetic fields on the order of magnitude 10-8gauss have been unified with their propitiators: quantum genetic particles, the gravitational potential of which is about a few ergs. As these fields are applied to the equations for solenoidal models, B=μNI/L, currents of about a microampere are derived; in perfect accord with recent clinical data indicating the therapeutic efficacy of weak currents in repair and growth of soft tissue, bone and nerve. The mechanism of reorientation of spin angular momentum of leptons and baryons influencing molecular magnetic domains to bring about "particle jumps" is presented to obtain a clinical picture. The clinical picture is that of an organism placed at right angles to flux lines in the midst of a solenoid immersed in water. The patient is then exposed to exogenously sourced resonant physiologic magnetic fields which convert malalligned atomic lattices of oncogenes and associated particles to homologous normal structures.

It has been a tradition to organize very successful UNESCO Postgraduate Courses on Geochemical Prospecting Methods in the former Czechoslovakia from mid 70's. The first certificated course-GEOCHIM PRAHA UNESCO 1975 was launched on September 5, 1975 and lasted till October 25,1975. Since that time this course has been organized biannually by the Czech Geological Survey in Prague together with the Dionyz SEtúr Geological Survey in Bratislava and sponsored by the Division of Earth Sciences (UNESCO/Paris) and the International Association of Geochemistry and Cosmochemistry (IAGS). The course was specialized on both theoretical and practical training in classical geochemical prospecting methods.

Sphincter preservation for distal rectal cancer - a goal worth achieving at all costs?

To assess the merits of currently available treatment options in the management of patients with low rectal cancer, a review of the medical literature pertaining to the operative and non-operative management of low rectal cancer was performed, with particular emphasis on sphincter preservation, oncological outcome, functional outcome, morbidity, quality of life, and patient preference. Low anterior resection (AR) is technically feasible in an increasing proportion of patients with low rectal cancer. The cost of sphincter preservation is the risk of morbidity and poor functional outcome in a significant proportion of patients. Transanal and endoscopic surgery are attractive options in selected patients that can provide satisfactory oncological outcomes while avoiding the morbidity and functional sequelae of open total mesorectal excision. In complete responders to neo-adjuvant chemoradiotherapy, a non-operative approach may prove to be an option. Abdominoperineal excision (APE) imposes a permanent stoma and is associated with significant incidence of perineal morbidity but avoids the risk of poor functional outcome following AR. Quality of life following AR and APE is comparable. Given the choice, most patients will choose AR over APE, however patients following APE positively appraise this option. In striving toward sphincter preservation the challenge is not only to achieve the best possible oncological outcome, but also to ensure that patients with low rectal cancer have realistic and accurate expectations of their treatment choice so that the best possible overall outcome can be obtained by each individual.
