Schisandrin B Protects against Ischemic Brain Damage by Regulating PI3K/AKT Signaling in Rats

A comparison of process performance during the anaerobic mono-and co-digestion of slaughterhouse waste through different operational modes

The use of consecutive feeding was applied to investigate the response of the microbial biomass to a second addition of substrates in terms of biodegradation using batch tests as a promising alternative to predict the behavior of the process. Anaerobic digestion（AD） of the slaughterhouse waste（SB） and its co-digestion with manure（M）, various crops（VC）, and municipal solid waste were evaluated. The results were then correlated to previous findings obtained by the authors for similar mixtures in batch and semi-continuous operation modes. AD of the SB failed showing total inhibition after a second feeding. Co-digestion of the SB ＋ M showed a significant improvement for all of the response variables investigated after the second feeding, while co-digestion of the SB ＋ VC resulted in a decline in all of these response variables. Similar patterns were previously detected, during both the batch and the semi-continuous modes.

Atomic coordination dictates vibrational characteristics and thermal conductivity in amorphous carbon

We discuss the role of atomic coordination in dictating the vibrational characteristics and thermal conductivity in amorphous *** systematic atomistic simulations on amorphous carbon structures at varying mass densities show the significant role played by the ratio of sp2 to sp3 hybridized bonds in dictating the contributions from propagating(phonon-like)and non-propagating vibrational modes and their influence on the overall thermal conductivities of the ***,our results show that as the concentration of sp3-bonded carbon atoms increases,the thermal conductivity can be increased by four fold,which is attributed to enhanced contributions from propagating modes in these amorphous *** results shed more light into the role of atomic coordination on dictating heat transfer mechanisms in amorphous materials,and also provide a deeper understanding of the ability to tune the thermal conductivity of amorphous carbon structures through the control of the local atomic coordination.

Hippocampus protection from apoptosis by Baicalin in a LiClpilocarpine-induced rat status epilepticus model through autophagy activation

BACKGROUND Autophagy is associated with hippocampal injury following status epilepticus(SE)and is considered a potential therapeutic ***,an emerging multitherapeutic drug,has shown neuroprotective effects in patients with nervous system diseases due to its antioxidant *** To investigate the potential role of autophagy in LiCl-pilocarpine-induced *** The drugs were administered 30 min before *** staining showed that Baicalin attenuated hippocampal injury and reduced neuronal death in the *** blotting and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling assay confirmed that Baicalin reversed the expression intensity of cleaved caspase-3 and apoptosis in hippocampal CA1 following ***,western blotting and immunofluorescence staining were used to measure the expression of autophagy markers(p62/SQSTM1,Beclin 1,and LC3)and apoptotic pathway markers(cleaved caspase-3 and Bcl-2).RESULTS Baicalin significantly upregulated autophagic activity and downregulated mitochondrial apoptotic pathway ***,3-methyladenine,a commonly used autophagy inhibitor,was simultaneously administered to inhibit the Baicalin-induced autophagy,abrogating the protective effect of Baicalin on the mitochondrial apoptotic *** We illustrated that Baicalin-induced activation of autophagy alleviates apoptotic death and protects the hippocampus of SE rats.

Background:During an experiment,a ski racer equipped with various measurement devices suffered an anterior cruciate ligament(ACL)rupture in his right *** aim of this study was to describe the underlying injury mechanism from a functional ***:Eight giant slalom turns(i.e.,4 left turns),followed by 1 left turn at which the ACL injury occurred,were recorded by 2 video cameras,electromyography of 4 relevant muscle groups,inertial measurement units to measure knee and hip angles,and pressure insoles to determine ground reaction ***:Due to a loss of balance,the ski racer began to slide sideways at the apex of a left *** sliding,his right(outside)leg was actively abducted upward without touching the *** ski racer then attempted to stand up again by dropping his leg back towards the snow *** end of this dropping was accompanied by a decrease in electromyographic activity in the knee stabilizing *** the inside edge of the outer ski caught the snow surface,a rapidly increasing peak force,knee flexion,and an aggressive sudden activation of the vastus medialis muscle were observed,while biceps femoris and rectus femoris further decreased their activation *** likely resulted in excessive anterior translation of the tibia relative to the femur,causing damage to the ***:Our example emphasizes that ski racers should not get up until they stop ***:“When you’re down,stay down.”

Hazards and Landscape Changes(Degradations) on Hungarian Karst Mountains Due to Natural and Human Effects

In order to study the karstological processes within the karst ecological system,the geohazards and degradation of karst landscapes on the karst areas of the Bakony mountains(Hungary),we investigated the abiotic elements of the environment,soil and cover deposits,erosion soil decay;the changes in the quantity and quality of karst waters:contamination at swallow holes,contamination of karst springs;and the biogenic factors:surface vegetation coverage by the corine land cover method,plant-ecological examinations,qualification of surface waters with the help of biological water *** recognized that the increasing human activities during the past few centuries have had significant impact on the investigated landscapes of karst areas because of their spatial *** the scope of our research we concluded that the landscape changes due to natural and human effects can vary strongly on the different karst *** differences can arise from the climatic and geomorphologic situation,the coverlayer's qualities,etc.,but primarily from the different utilization of the investigated karst areas(*** intensity,characteristics and territorial extension of utilization).On the spot investigation we detected traces of new and fast geomorphological processes(gully formation,landslides,collapses,new sinkhole development) and landforms(sinkholes,gullies,swallow holes),which are clear evidences of the effect of climatic changes.

Offspring from oocytes grown in frozen-thawed ovarian tissues transplanted to male and female bodies

Objective: There are few reports of live births from heterotopic transplantation of frozen-thawed ovarian tissue. The purpose of this study is to assess the follicular development in the frozen-thawed ovarian tissues following heterotopic transplantation in both female and male ***: Cluster of differentiation 1 (CD1) mice (6-8 weeks) were used in this study as ovarian tissue donors and foster mothers for embryo transfer. Sperm from CD1 male mice were used for insemination by intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Nude severe combined immunodeficiency mice (8 weeks) were employed as recipients of ovarian tissue transplantation. The frozen-thawed ovarian tissues were transplanted to 4 sites on each mouse, female and male, subcutaneously. After 3 months, both female and male mice were injected with 5.0 IU gonadotropins intraperitoneally. Post 48 hours of injection, the mouse was killed for ovarian transplant collection. Only fully grown oocytes with contacted cumulus cells (cumulus-oocyte complexes) were then selected for maturationin *** vitro matured oocytes were inseminated with fresh sperm by ICSI, and the developed blastocysts were frozen using the vitrification method and stored until embryo transfer. After thawing, the thawed blastocysts were incubated for at least 2 hours before the transfer. The foster mice mothers mated with vasectomised male 3 days previously. Live birth was monitored at 19 days after transfer, and the resulted offspring was raised for fertility ***: The relatively high recovery rates of the transplanted ovarian tissues were collected in both frozen-thawed and fresh ovarian tissue transplants from both female and male bodies. The fully grown immature oocytes became maturein vitro and the fertilized zygotes developed to blastocyst stage. 以红豆中总黄酮类成分研究不同煮制加工方式对总黄酮含量影响,提取并测定总黄酮,研究其抗氧化活性。本实验以料液比、煮制时间、浸泡时间为考察因素,通过单因素实验控制可变量来确定最佳提取条件,且用紫外光法测定总黄酮含量,并在最佳条件下采用DPPH法测定抗氧化活性。单因素实验得到最佳的料液比、浸泡时间、煮制时间分别为1∶30、20 min、60 min,在最佳条件下总黄酮提取率达到最大26.87%。该法煮制提取的红豆总黄酮有较好的抗氧化活性。
