A simple model for reconstructing geomagnetic field intensity with (10)~Be production rate and its application in Loess studies

A simple model for reconstructing the paleomagnetic field intensity with (10)~Be production rate was used for the first time in Loess (10)~Be studies of Luochuan profile. Using the LGM (Last Glacial Maxmium) method, the climatic effects and geomagnetic modulation effects on loess (10)~Be was separated and in turn the 80 ka geomagnetic excursion sequence reconstructed, of which the globally remarkable geomagnetic excursion events such as the Laschamp (42 ka), Mono Lake (32 ka) during the Last Glacial period were revealed and the paleo-geomagnetic intensity curve from Loess (10)~Be over the past 80 ka was quantitatively reconstructed. The reconstructed paleo-intensity fits well with the paleo-intensity curves (SINT200 and NAPIS75), which indicates the significance of global criterion of the (10)~Be paleo- intensity curve and the future direction of loess (10)~Be tracing studies. Results show the irregular vari-ability of the East Asian monsoon precipitation in Loess Plateau is the main cause that has resulted in the ambiguity of the geomagnetic modulation of the (10)~Be record in the loess, and the intrinsic source component of the loess (10)~Be and inherited fraction of magnetic susceptibility (SUS) are characterized by the 'quasi-homogeneous distribution' manner.

Growth kinetics of the most stable polymorph of calcium carbonate,calcite,has been studied in seeded stirred batch experiments in MEG-water solutions at 40 ℃ and 70 ℃,conditions relevant for the processing of natural *** was found that MEG changes the growth order from two in pure water to one in solvent mixtures of MEG and *** parabolic growth (growth order is equal to two),it could be shown that MEG decreases the growth rate constant for calcite from 0.52 nm/s to 0.11 nm/s (70 ℃) when the MEG-content is increased from 0 wt% MEG to 65 wt% *** the temperature from 70 ℃ to 40 ℃ has a similar effect on the growth rate constant as raising the level of MEG to 65 wt%.

Hematopoietic cell transplantation for Crohn’s disease;is it time?

AIM： To review all studies in the literature that have assessed Hematopoietic cell transplantation （HCT） and Crohn＇s disease （CD） with the ultimate aims of determining if this is a viable treatment option for those with CD. A secondary aim was to review the above literature and determine if the studies shed further light on the mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of CD. METHODS： An extensive Medline search was performed on all articles from 1970 to 2005 using the keywords; bone marrow transplant, stem cell, hematopoietic cell, Crohn＇s disease and inflammatory bowel disease. RESULTS： We identified one case in which a patient developed CD following an allogeneic HCT from a sibling suffering with CD. Evidence for transfer of the genetic predisposition to develop CD was also identified with report of a patient that developed severe CD following an allogeneic HCT. Following HCT it was found that the donor （that had no signs or symptoms of CD） and the recipient had several haplotype mismatches in HLA class 111 genes in the IBD3 locus including a polymorphism of NOD2/CARD15 that has been associated with CD. Thirty three published cases of patients with CD who underwent either autologous or allogeneic HCT were identified. At the time of publication 29 of these 33 patients were considered to be in remission. The median follow-up time was seven years, and twenty months for allogeneic and autologous HCT respectively. For patients who underwent HCT primarily for treatment of their CD there have been no mortalities related to transplant complications. CONCLUSION： Overall these preliminary data suggest that both allogeneic and autologous HCT may be effective in inducing remission in refractory CD. This supports the hypothesis that the hematolymphatic cells play a key role in CD and that resetting of the immune system may be a critical approach in the management or cure of CD.

Hypertriglyceridemia-induced pancreatitis: A case-based review

Hypertriglyceridemia is an established cause of pancreatitis. In a case-based approach, we present a review of hypertriglyceridemja and how it can cause pancreatitis. We outline how to investigate and manage such patients. A 35 year old man presented to the emergency department with abdominal pain and biochemical evidence of acute pancreatitis. There was no history of alcohol consumption and biliary imaging was normal. The only relevant past medical history was that of mild hyperlipidemia, treated with diet alone. Physical exam revealed epigastric tenderness, right lateral rectus palsy, lipemia retinalis, bitemporal hemianopsia and a delay in the relaxation phase of his ankle reflexes. Subsequent laboratory investigation revealed marked hypertriglyceridemia and panhypopituarism. An enhanced CT scan of the head revealed a large suprasellar mass impinging on the optic chiasm and hypothalamus. The patient was treated supportively; thyroid replacement and lipid lowering agents were started. He underwent a successful resection of a craniopharyngioma. Postoperatively, the patient did well on hormone replacement therapy. He has had no further attacks of pancreatitis. This case highlights many of the factors involved in the regulation of triglyceride metabolism. We review the common causes of hypertriglyceridemia and the proposed mechanisms resulting in pancreatitis. The incidence and management of hypertriglyceridemiainduced pancreatitis are also discussed.

The relationship of high-intensity cross-training with arterial stiffness

Background'.Central arterial stiffness is a cardiovascular risk factor that can be readily affected through engagement in physical exercise training,with resistance and aerobic exercise having disparate *** the growing popularity of high-intensity cross-training(HICT),little is currently known about the effects of this mixed modality exercise stimulus on arterial ***,the purpose of this study was to characterize the arterial stiffness of habitual HICT participants *** active and sedentary controls using a cross-sectional ***'.A total of 30 participants were recruited:10 middle-aged long-term participants of HICT(CrossFit)and 20 age,sex,and height matched controls(10 recreationally active,10 sedentary).Central and peripheral pulse wave velocities were measured for the carotid-femoral and femoral-dorsalis pedis arterial *** fitness(maximal oxygen uptake,VChmax)was measured and typical exercise participation rates were self-reported for each ***'.HICT participants manifested central pulse wave velocity(PWV)(5.3±1.0 m/s,mean±SD)and VChmax(43±6 mL/kg/min)values nearly identical to active *** active groups had significantly better values than sedentary controls(7.1±1.0 m/s,p≤0.001;and 32±7 mL/kg/min,p=0.01).No differences were observed in peripheral PWV between ***'.Habitual participation in HICT exercise was not associated with increased central nor peripheral arterial ***-term HICT participants presented with similar fitness and arterial stiffness as compared with participants who practiced traditional aerobic *** to sedentary living,HICT may offer musculoskeletal and cardiovascular health benefits without negatively impacting arterial stiffness.
