Risk factors for suicidal behaviour in late-life depression:A systematic review

BACKGROUND Suicide is a leading cause of preventable death worldwide,with its peak of maximum incidence in later life.Depression often puts an individual at higher risk for suicidal behaviour.In turn,depression deserves particular interest in old age due to its high prevalence and dramatic impact on health and wellbeing.AIM To gather integrated evidence on the potential risk factors for suicide behaviour development in depressive older adults,and to examine the effects of depression treatment to tackle suicide behaviour in this population.METHODS A systematic review of empirical studies,published from 2000 onwards,was conducted.Suicidal behaviour was addressed considering its varying forms(i.e.,wish to die,ideation,attempt,and completed suicide).RESULTS Thirty-five papers were selected for review,comprising both clinical and epidemiological studies.Most of studies focused on suicidal ideation(60%).The studies consistently pointed out that the risk was related to depressive episode severity,psychiatric comorbidity(anxiety or substance use disorders),poorer health status,and loss of functionality.Reduced social support and loneliness were also associated with suicide behaviour in depressive older adults.Finally,the intervention studies showed that suicidal behaviour was a robust predictor of depression treatment response.Reductions in suicidal ideation were moderated by reductions in risk factors for suicide symptoms.CONCLUSION To sum up,common and age-specific risk factors seem to be involved in suicide development in depressive older adults.A major effort should be made to tackle this serious public health concern so as to promote older people to age healthily and well.

Measurement of externalizing disorders such as antisocial disorders,attentiondeficit/hyperactivity disorder or borderline disorder have relevant implications for the daily lives of people with these disorders.While the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders(DSM)and the International Classification of Diseases(ICD)have provided the diagnostic framework for decades,recent dimensional frameworks question the categorical approach of psychopathology,inherent in traditional nosotaxies.Tests and instruments develop under the DSM or ICD framework preferentially adopt this categorical approach,providing diagnostic labels.In contrast,dimensional measurement instruments provide an individualized profile for the domains that comprise the externalizing spectrum,but are less widely used in practice.Current paper aims to review the operational definitions of externalizing disorders defined under these different frameworks,revise the different measurement alternatives existing,and provide an integrative operational definition.First,an analysis of the operational definition of externalizing disorders among the DSM/ICD diagnostic systems and the recent Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology(HiTOP)model is carried out.Then,in order to analyze the coverage of operational definitions found,a description of measurement instruments among each conceptualization is provided.Three phases in the development of the ICD and DSM diagnosis systems can be observed with direct implications for measurement.ICD and DSM versions have progressively introduced systematicity,providing more detailed descriptions of diagnostic criteria and categories that ease the measurement instrument development.However,it is questioned whether the DSM/ICD systems adequately modelize externalizing disorders,and therefore their measurement.More recent theoretical approaches,such as the HiTOP model seek to overcome some of the criticism raised towards the classification systems.Nevertheless,several issues concerning this model raise mesasurement challe

We analyzed the allelic and genotypic frequencies of the glutathione-S-transferase P1 （GSTPI） rs1695 single nucleotide polymorphism （SNP） in 290 patients with multiple sclerosis （MS） and in 310 healthy controls. We found no significant association between the rs1695 variant and MS. Among MS patients, there was no relationship between the rs1695 variant and either gender, clinical type of MS or the age of onset of MS.

In the last decade,approaches based on T cells and their immunomodulatory receptors have emerged as a solid improvement in treatments for various types of cancer.However,the roles of these molecules in the therapeutic context of autoimmune and cardiovascular diseases are still relatively unexplored.Here,we review the best known and most com m only used immunomodulatory T cell receptors in clinical practice(PD-1 and CTLA-4),along with the rest of the receptors with known functions in animal models,which have great potential as modulators in human pathologies in the medium term.Am ong these other receptors is the receptor CD69,which has recently been described to be expressed in mouse and human T cells in autoimmune and cardiovascular diseases and cancer.However,inhibition of these receptors individually or in combination by drugs or monoclonal antibodies generates a loss of immunological tolerance and can trigger multiple autoimmune disorders in different organs and immune-related adverse effects.In the coming decades,knowledge on the functions of different immunomodulatory receptors will be pivotal for the development of new and better therapies with less harmful side effects.In this review,we discuss the roles of these receptors in the control of immunity from a perspective focused on therapeutic potential in not only cancer but also autoimmune diseases,such as systemic lupus erythematosus,autoimmune diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis,and cardiovascular diseases,such as atherosclerosis,acute myocardial infarction,and myocarditis.

Glycogen constitutes the major carbon storage source in cyanobacteria, as starch in algae and higher plants. Glycogen and starch synthesis is linked to active photosynthesis and both of them are degraded to glucose in the dark to maintain cell metabolism. Control of glycogen biosynthesis in cyanobacteria could be mediated by the regulation of the enzymes involved in this process, ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase （AGP） and glycogen synthase, which were identified as putative thioredoxin targets. We have analyzed whether both enzymes were subjected to redox modification using purified recombinant enzymes or cell extracts in the model cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803. Our results indicate that both AGP and glycogen synthases are sensitive to copper oxidation. However, only AGP exhibits a decrease in its enzymatic activity, which is recovered after reduction by DTT or reduced thioredoxin （TrxA）, suggesting a redox control of AGP. In order to elucidate the role in redox control of the cysteine residues present on the AGP sequence （C45, C185, C320, and C337）, they were replaced with serine. All AGP mutant proteins remained active when expressed in Synechocystis, although they showed different electrophoretic mobility profiles after copper oxidation, reflecting a complex pattern of cysteines interaction.

Plasmon-induced dual-wavelength operation in a Yb^(3+) laser

Expanding the functionalities of plasmon-assisted lasers is essential for emergent applications in nanoscience and nanotechnology.Here,we report on a novel ability of plasmonic structures to induce dual-wavelength lasing in the near-infrared region in a Yb^(3+) solid-state laser.By means of the effects of disordered plasmonic networks deposited on the surface of a Yb^(3+)-doped nonlinear RTP crystal,room-temperature dual-wavelength lasing,with a frequency difference between the lines in the THz range,is realized.The dual-wavelength laser is produced by the simultaneous activation of two lasing channels,namely,an electronic-and a phonon-terminated laser transition.The latter is enabled by the out-of-plane field components that are generated by the plasmonic structures,which excite specific Raman modes.Additionally,multiline radiation at three different wavelengths is demonstrated in the visible spectral region via two self-frequency conversion processes,which occur in the vicinities of the plasmonic structures.The results demonstrate the potential of plasmonic nanostructures for inducing drastic modifications in the operational mode of a solid-state laser and hold promise for applications in a variety of fields,including multiplexing,precise spectroscopies,and THz radiation generation via a simple and cost-effective procedure.

AIM:To assess the prevalence of portal hypertension (PH) related colorectal lesions in liver transplant candidates, and to evaluate its association with the severity of PH.METHODS: Between October 2004 and December 2005, colonoscopy was performed in 92 cirrhotic liver transplant candidates. We described the lesions resulting from colorectal PH and their association with the grade of PH in 77 patients who underwent measurement of hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG).RESULTS: Mean age was 55 years and 80.7% of patients were men. The main etiology of cirrhosis was alcoholism (45.5%). Portal hypertensive colopathy (PHC) was found in 23.9%, colonic varices in 7.6% and polyps in 38% of patients (adenomatous type 65.2%). One asymptomatic patient had a well-differentiated adenocarcinoma. The manifestations of colorectal PH were not associated with the etiology of liver disease or with the Child-Pugh grade. Ninety percent of patients with colopathy presented with gastroesopha-geal varices (GEV), and 27.5% of patients with GEV presented with colopathy (P=0.12). A relationship between higher values of HVPG and presence of col-opathy was observed (19.9±6.2 mmHg vs 16.8±5.4 mmHg, P=0.045), but not with the grade of col-opathy (P=0.13). Preneoplastic polyps and neoplasm (P=0.02) and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (P=0.006) were more prevalent in patients with colopathy. We did not observe any association between previous β-blocker therapy and the presence of colorectal portal hypertensive vasculopathy.CONCLUSION: PHC is common in cirrhotic liver trans-plant candidates and is associated with higher portal pressure.

Elevated CO2 leads to a decrease in potential net photosynthesis in long-term experiments and thus to a reduction in potential growth. This process is known as photosynthetic downregulation. There is no agreement on the definition of which parameters are the most sensitive for detecting CO2 acclimation. In order to investigate the most sensitive photosynthetic and molecular markers of CO2 acclimation, the effects of elevated CO2, and associated elevated temperature were analyzed in alfalfa plants inoculated with different Sinorhizobium meliloti strains. Plants （Medicago sativa L. cv. Aragon） were grown in summer or autumn in temperature gradient greenhouses （TGG）. At the end of the experiment, all plants showed acclimation in both seasons, especially under elevated summer temperatures. This was probably due to the lower nitrogen （N） availability caused by decreased N2-fixation under higher temperatures. Photosynthesis measured at growth CO2 concentration, rubisco in vitro activity and maximum rate of carboxylation were the most sensitive parameters for detecting downregulation. Severe acclimation was also related with decreases in leaf nitrogen content associated with declines in rubisco content （large and small subunits） and activity that resulted in a drop in photosynthesis. Despite the sensitivity of rubisco content as a marker of acclimation, it was not coordinated with gene expression, possibly due to a lag between gene transcription and protein translation.

Background:Chagas disease is an important health problem in Latin America due to its incapacitating effects and associated mortality.Studies on seropositivity for Trypanosoma cruzi in Mexican dogs have demonstrated a direct correlation between seropositivity in humans and dogs,which can act as sentinels for the disease in this region.The objective of this study was to determine the seropositivity for T.cruzi infection in dogs from Sonora,a northern borderstate of Mexico.Methods:Responsible pet owners were selected at random from an urban area of Empalme municipality,Sonora,Mexico,and from there,180 dog samples were collected.Anti-T.cruzi antibodies were determined using the enzymelinked immunosorbent assay(ELISA)method.Reactive ELISA sera were processed by indirect immunofluorescence to confirm the presence of anti-T.cruzi antibodies.For the statistical analysis,chi-square tests were conducted.Results:Dogs’sera showed a seropositivity rate of 4.44%.The rate of seropositivity was not associated with the dogs’age,sex,or socioeconomics pertaining to the geographical area.One sample(1/180,0.55%)showed the acute state of the disease.Conclusions:The study found a presence of anti-T.cruzi antibodies in dogs in this area,which suggests vector transmission.There is a need for active surveillance programs throughout the state of Sonora and vector control strategies should also be implemented in endemic regions.
