Strategies towards robust interpretations of in situ zircon Lu-Hf isotope analyses

The combination of U-Pb and Lu-Hf compositions measured in zircon crystals is a remarkably powerful isotopic couplet that provides measures on both the timing of mineral growth and the radiogenic enrichment of the source from which the zircon *** U-Pb age documents the timing of zircon crystallization/recrystallization and Hf isotopes inform on the degree to which the host melt was derived from a radiogenic reservoir(*** mantle) versus an unradiogenic reservoir(*** continental crust),or some mixture of these *** ease of generating large quantities of zircon U-Pb and Lu-Hf data has been in large part facilitated by instrument ***,the dramatic increase in time constrained zircon Lu-Hf analyses in the Earth science community has brought to the fore the importance of careful data collection and reduction workflows,onto which robust geological interpretations may be *** this work,we discuss the fundamentals of Lu-Hf isotopes in zircon,which then allows us to provide a robust,accessible,methodology for the assessment of data ***,we discuss some novel techniques for:data visualization—that facilitates better transparency of data interpretation;integration of geographic information—that may reveal spatial trends where temporal trends were only apparent before;and some novel statistical evaluation tools—that may provide more rigorous interand intra-sample comparisons.

Co-occurrence of carbohydrate malabsorption and primary epiploic appendagitis

Unspecific abdominal complaints including bloating and irregular bowel movements may be caused by carbohydrate malabsorption syndromes, e.g., lactose and fructose malabsorption. These symptoms were investigated with hydrogen(H2) breath tests and correlated to carbohydrate malabsorption. During performing these H2-breath tests the patient presented with an acute, localized, non-migratory pain in the left lower abdominal quadrant. Primary epiploic appendagitis is a rare cause of abdominal acute or subacute complaints and diagnosis of primary epiploic appendagitis(PEA) is made when computed tomography reveals a characteristic lesion. We report on a patient with cooccurrence of lactose and fructose malabsorption, which was treated successfully with a diet free of culprit carbohydrates, with PEA recovering without medication or surgical treatment within few days. Since the abdominal unspecific symptoms had been present for months, they appeared not to be correlated to the acute localized abdominal pain, therefore we speculate on a random co-occurrence of combined carbohydrate malabsorption and PEA.

Oxygen isotopes are a versatile tool to address a wide range of questions in the Earth *** include geothermometry,paleoclimatology,tracing of geochemical reservoirs,fluid-rock interaction,magmatic petrogenesis,and identification of extra-terrestrial *** arguably provides one of the most robust records of primary magmatic O isotope ratio due to low diffusion rates in crystalline *** ability to correlate zircon O isotopes with temporal and petrogenetic information(e.g.U-Pb geochronology,Lu-Hf isotopes,and trace elements)makes this mineral a key archive for understanding Earth’s crustal ***,zircon O isotope geochemistry has found widespread usage to address fundamental questions across the earth and planetary *** general apparent ease of O isotopic acquisition through the advancement of rapid in situ techniques(*** ion mass spectrometry;SIMS)and associated dedicated national laboratories has led to the generation of large O isotopic data sets of variable quality,highlighting the importance of a coherent workflow for data collection,reduction,and *** paper presents a set of approaches for measurement,assessment,and reporting of zircon O isotope *** focus in this contribution is on in situ analysis via secondary ion mass spectrometry using large geometry instruments,but other commonly used techniques are briefly reviewed for *** work aims to provide an analytical framework necessary for geologically meaningful interpretation of O isotope *** addition,we describe inherent geological(***-induced disturbance of the zircon O isotopic system)and analytical(*** due to sample topography effects)challenges and outline means to identify and avoid such issues as a prerequisite to the generation of robust primary O isotopic signatures for geological interpretation.

Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy （STS） down to 0.3 K in B-fields up to 12 T, we investigate the local density of states of a two-dimensional electron system （2DES） created by Cs adsorption on n-type and p-type InSb（110）. Cs induces a large band bending close to the surface creating a 2DES in the accumulation/inversion layer, which exhibits a 2D Fermi level in the inversion layer. The local density of states of the 2DES at B=0 T shows standing waves with wave numbers in accordance with theory. In a perpendicular magnetic field the percolating drift states of the quantum hall transition are observed within the disorder broadened Landau levels [1] （Fig. 1）. Using a highly p-doped sample we achieve a steep band bending potential showing Landau levels with a beating pattern attributed to Rashba spin splitting. A large Rashba parameter of α= 7·10-11 eV m can be estimated. Local dI/dV（V,B）-spectra at a less steep band bending exhibit an increased tip-induced band bending due the localization of states within the quantum-Hall regime, a Coulomb gap at the Fermi level and indications of an exchange enhanced spin splitting.

Aim: To determine the long term intraocular pressure (IOP) response to phacoemulsification in patients with and without exfoliation syndrome (XFS). Methods: Prospective, multicentre, cohort study with the following inclusion criteria: age over 50 years, open iridocorneal angle, and cataract. Two groups were enrolled: those with XFS and those without. The main outcome was mean IOP reduction 2 years after phacoemulsi fication cataract extraction (PCE). Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed. Results: 183 patients were enrolled, 71 with and 112 without XFS. There were 29 patients with glaucoma in both groups. Mean baseline IOP was higher in XFS compared to control eyes (17.60 (SD 3.23) mm Hg v 16.08 (3.18) mm Hg, p=0.002). Overall IOP reduction was significantly greater in the XFS group at the 2 year time point (-1.85 mm Hg v-0.62 mm Hg in the controls (p=0.0037)). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that the IOP lowering effect in the XFS group may be related to irrigation volume at the time of surgery. In the subgroup analyses IOP lowering was significantly greater in the XFS and XFG patients than in controls without glaucoma, and POAG controls, respectively. The percentage of patients with a postoperative IOP spike was similar and relatively high in both XFS and control groups (34%v 25%; p=0.54). Conclusion: IOP decreases more in patients with XFS following PCE compared to control eyes without XFS. This effect is more pronounced in glaucoma patients and persists for at least 2 years.

PURPOSE: To assess the relationship between ciliary body thickness and refractive error. DESIGN: Prospective observational case series. METHODS: We enrolled 75 eyes of 75 patients with no history of intraocular surgery or use of anti-glaucoma medication. Axial length was measured by A-scan ultrasonography. Ciliary body thickness (CBT) was measured by two masked observers on radial-section images of the temporal corneoscleral limbus, acquired with ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) at 2 and 3 mm posterior to the scleral spur (CBT2 and CBT3, respectively). RESULTS: Refractive error was inversely correlated with CBT2 and CBT3 (r=-0.64 and r=-0.52, P< .0001, respectively). Axial length was correlated with CBT (r=0.66 and r=0.57, P< .0001, for CBT2 and CBT3, respectively). CONCLUSION: CBT increases with increasing myopia and axial length.
