Development and characterization of 3D-printed electroconductive pHEMA-co-MAA NP-laden hydrogels for tissue engineering

Tissue engineering(TE)continues to be widely explored as a potential solution to meet critical clinical needs for diseased tissue replacement and tissue *** this study,we developed a poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-methacrylic acid)(pHEMA-co-MAA)based hydrogel loaded with newly synthesized conductive poly(3,4-ethylene-dioxythiophene)(PEDOT)and polypyrrole(PPy)nanoparticles(NPs),and subsequently processed these hydrogels into tissue engineered constructs via three-dimensional(3D)*** presence of the NPs was critical as they altered the rheological properties during ***,all samples exhibited suitable shear thinning properties,allowing for the development of an optimized processing window for 3D *** were 3D printed into pre-determined disk-shaped configurations of 2 and 10 mm in height and diameter,*** observed that the NPs disrupted the gel crosslinking efficiencies,leading to shorter degradation times and compressive mechanical properties ranging between 450 and 550 *** conductivity of the printed hydrogels increased along with the NP concentration to(5.10±0.37)×10^(−7)S/*** vitro studies with cortical astrocyte cell cultures demonstrated that exposure to the pHEMA-co-MAA NP hydrogels yielded high cellular viability and proliferation ***,hydrogel antimicrobial studies with staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria revealed that the developed hydrogels affected bacterial *** together,these materials show promise for various TE strategies.

Otolaryngology residency program factors associated with female resident representation

Obj.ctive:Female representation in the field of otolaryngology is *** is the first point at which medical school graduates specialize in a chosen field and thus represents an opportunity to recruit and train more female *** study sought to identify program factors associated with greater female representation among resident ***:Departmental websites of all 124 otolaryngology residency programs in the United States and Puerto Rico were examined for a list of *** programs with a resident roster available,the genders of residents,faculty,program directors,and chairpersons were *** and city population for each program was also recorded,as was female resident *** were compared using Pearson Chi‐squared univariate ***:1,632 residents and 2,605 faculty were included in the analysis of 109 *** median female resident representation was 40%.Programs with larger faculty sizes,more female faculty,and urban location were associated with an above‐median female resident *** with a larger residency cohort approached significance regarding above‐median female resident *** female faculty representation,program director gender,chairperson gender,and US region were not associated with variation in female resident ***:Greater female otolaryngology residency representation was associated with programs having an urban location and greater numbers of female and total *** was also likely that a larger resident cohort size may affect female resident *** proportions of female faculty,program director,and chairperson gender,as well as the US region,were not associated with variation in female resident gender representation.

Obj.ctives Scope Due to the plasticity, macrophage as a heterogeneous population of immune cells could modify their phenotype rapidly as response to environmental factors. We differentiated primary macrophages to classic macrophages or alternative macrophages and analysed cell typespecific markers as well as those markers that response to dietary fibers. Some of these fibers for example given the beta-glucan Lentinan from Shiitake mushroom, have shown immunomodulating properties towards macrophages whichmight be expected to be revealed by these analysis. Methods Macrophages were obtained after 7 days culturing of monocytes in RPMI-1640 medium supplemented with 50 ng/ml MCSF(referred to as M(MCSF) and followed polarization by 20 ng/ml TNF-α plus 20 ng/ml IFN-γ or 20 ng/ml IL-4 for M(TNF-α + IFN-γ) and M(IL4) separately. Gene expression profiles of macrophages were analysed by Affymetrix GeneC hips(Human gene 1.1 ST Array) and verified mR NA expression by q ***,M(MCSF)were incubated with Lentinan containing Shiitake extract at 500μg/ml for the same 18 hours. Results Comparing M(TNF-α + IFN-γ) to M(IL4), we identified 8639 significant differencially expressing genes. According to those genes, IDO1, IRG1, ANKRD22, GBP5 and GBP3 were the top 5 markers for M(TNF-α + IFN-γ). Meanwhile, IL17 RB, ALOX5, CD180, ST8SIA6 and CHDH were the top 5 markers for M(IL4). Interestingly, indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase(IDO) is an immunomodulatory protein expressed in various antigen presenting cells such as macrophages and dendritic cells, which can suppress adaptive immunity and showed T cells suppression and immune tolerance activity. Further, we verified IDO1 m RNA expression by q PCR, normalized to medium control, which confirmed that M(TNF-α + IFN-γ)highly express IDO1 while M(IL4) do not. Plants require a number of essential elements in different proportions for ensuring their growth and *** elemental concentrations in leaves reflect the functions and adaptations of plants under specific environmental ***,less is known about how the spectrum of leaf elements associated with resource acquisition,photosynthesis and growth regulates forest biomass along broad elevational *** examined the influence of leaf element distribution and diversity on forest biomass by analyzing ten elements(C,N,P,K,Ca,Mg,Zn,Fe,Cu,and Mn)in tree communities situated every 100 meters along an extensive elevation gradient,ranging from the tropical forest(80 meters above sea level)to the alpine treeline(4200 meters above sea level)in the Kangchenj.nga Landscape in eastern Nepal *** calculated communityweighted averages(reflecting dominant traits governing biomass,i.e.,mass-ratio effect)and functional divergence(reflecting increased trait variety,i.e.,complementarity effect)for leaf elements in a total of 1,859 trees representing 116 *** increasing mass-ratio effect and decreasing complementarity in leaf elements enhance forest biomass accumulation.A combination of elements together with elevation explains biomass(52.2%of the variance)better than individual elemental trait diversity(0.05%to 21%of the variance).Elevation modulates trait diversity among plant species in biomass *** promotes biomass at lower elevations,but reduces biomass at higher elevations,demonstrating an interaction between elevation and *** interaction between elevation and mass-ratio effect produces heterogeneous effects on biomass along the elevation *** research indicates that biomass accumulation can be disproportionately affected by elevation due to interactions among trait diversities across vegetation *** higher trait variation enhances the adaptation of species to environmental changes,it reduces

A History of Fischer-Tropsch Wax Upgrading at BP-from Catalyst Screening Studies to Full Scale Demonstration in Alaska

Conversion of Fischer-Tropsch wax into high quality synthetic crude or finished transportation fuels such as premium diesel has been studied over the past 15 years within BP. Catalyst screening and selection was carried out in dedicated micro-reactors and pilot plants, whose designs are critical to the performance selection. Variation in catalyst composition and defining the gas to oil feed ratios with the operating temperature are a few of the parameters studied. Product selection and maximizing diesel yield combined with stability （catalyst life） were the ultimate drivers. The selected catalyst was then tested under commercial conditions in a dedicated 300 barrel per day demonstration plant. The products were also tested in engines to assess their combustion characteristics.
