Transfer cells （TCs） are specialized cells exhibiting invaginated wall ingrowths （Wls）, thereby amplifying their plasma membrane surface area （PMSA） and hence the capacity to transport nutrients. However, it remains unknown as to whether TCs play a role in biomass yield increase during evolution or domestication. Here, we examine this issue from a comparative evolutionary perspective. The cultivated tetraploid AD genome species of cotton and its A and D genome diploid progenitors displayed high, medium, and low seed and fiber biomass yield, respectively. In all three species, cells of the innermost layer of the seed coat juxtaposed to the filial tissues trans-differentiated to a TC morphology. Electron microscopic analyses revealed that these TCs are characterized by sequential formation of flange and reticulate Wls during the phase of rapid increase in seed biomass. Significantly, TCs from the tetraploid species developed substantially more flange and reticulate Wls and exhibited a higher degree of reticulate WI formation than their progenitors. Consequently, the estimated PMSA of TCs of the tetraploid species was about 4 and 70 times higher than that of TCs of the A and D genome progenitors, respectively, which correlates positively with seed and fiber biomass yield. Further, TCs with extensive Wls in the tetraploid species had much stronger expression of sucrose synthase, a key enzyme involved in TC Wl formation and function, than those from the A and D progenitors. The analyses provide a set of novel evidence that the development of TC Wls may play an important role in the increase of seed and fiber biomass yield through polyploidization during evolution.

Thirty years ago, the analysis of longwall pillar stability(ALPS) inaugurated a new era in coal pillar *** was the first empirical pillar design technique to consider the abutment loads that arise from full extraction, and the first to be calibrated using an extensive database of longwall mining case *** was followed by the analysis of retreat mining stability(ARMPS) and the analysis of multiple seam stability(AMSS). These methods incorporated other innovations, including the coal mine roof rating(CMRR), the mark-Bieniawski pillar strength formula, and the pressure arch loading model. They also built upon ever larger case history databases and employed more sophisticated statistical ***, these empirical methods are used in nearly every underground coal mine in the US. However,the piecemeal manner in which these methods have evolved resulted in some weaknesses. For example,in certain situations, it may not be obvious which program is the best to use. Other times the results from the different programs are not entirely consistent with each other. The programs have also not been updated for several years, and some changes were necessary to keep pace with new developments in mining practice. The analysis of coal pillar stability(ACPS) now integrates all three of the older software packages into a single pillar design framework. ACPS also incorporates the latest research findings in the field of pillar design, including an expanded multiple seam case history data base and a new method to evaluate room and pillar panels containing multiple rows of pillars left in place during pillar *** also includes updated guidance and warnings for users and features upgraded help files and graphics.

Background To determine whether the introduction of pasteurized donor human milk and probiotics for infants born<32 weeks gestational age or<1500 g birthweight is associated with a reduction in mortality and the incidence of necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) and sepsis. Methods We performed a retrospective analysis of two cohorts: before and after the introduction of probiotics and pasteurised donor human milk. Univariate analysis of primary and secondary outcomes was performed;variables impacting outcomes were assessed using multivariate logistic regression. Results There were 1791 infants: 1334 in the pre-donor milk/probiotic cohort and 457 in the post-donor milk/probiotic cohort. On univariate analysis, mortality (7.6 vs. 2.4%, P<0.001) and incidence of sepsis (6.2 vs. 3.5%, P=0.028) were statistically significantly lower in the post-donor milk/probiotic group. NEC (2.8 vs. 1.5%, P=0.14) and non-NEC associ-ated gastrointestinal perforation (1.6 vs. 0.4%, P=0.052) were lower in the post-donor milk/probiotics cohort, but these were not statistically significant. The difference in mortality remained statistically significant on multivariate analysis in the post-donor milk/probiotic cohort compared to those in the pre-donor milk/probiotic cohort (odds ratio 0.31, 95% confidence interval 0.16–0.61). The decrease in the incidence of NEC was consistent with previous observational studies but the differ-ence was not statistically significant. Conclusion The availability of probiotics and pasteurised donor human milk is associated with a reduction in mortality in very preterm infants.

The microstructural evolution and precipitation behaviour of Nb–V–Mo and single V containing transformation induced plasticity assisted steels were investigated during thermomechanical processing. A plane strain compression testing machine was used to simulate the thermomechanical processing. Microstructures were characterised by optical microscopy, scanning-transmission electron microscopy and microanalysis, and X-ray diffraction analysis, and Vickers hardness was obtained from the deformed specimens. The resulting microstructure of both Nb–V–Mo and V steels at room temperature primarily consisted of an acicular/bainitic ferrite, retained austenite and martensite surrounded by allotriomorphic *** TEM analysis showed that a significant number of Nb（V,Mo）（C,N） precipitates were formed in the microstructure down to the finishing stage in Nb–V–Mo steel（i.e. 830℃）. It was also found that the V（C,N）precipitation primarily occurred in both ferrite and deformed austenite below the finishing stage. The results suggested that Nb–Mo additions considerably increased the temperature stability of microalloy precipitates and controlled the microstructural evolution of austenite. However, the microalloy precipitation did not cause a significant precipitation strengthening in both Nb–V–Mo and V steels at room temperature.
