Human health risks associated to trace elements and metals in commercial fish from the Brazilian Amazon

Fish constitutes the main protein source for the Amazonian ***,the impact of different anthropogenic activities on trace element and metal accumulation in fish and their risks for human health at a regional scale remain largely *** we assessed exposure levels of 10 trace elements andmetals(Cr,Mn,Fe,Ni,Cu,Zn,As,Cd,Pb,and Hg)in 56 samples belonging to 11 different species of fish from the Brazilian *** studied the relationship between exposure levels,fish origin,and fish feeding habits,and assessed toxicological and carcinogenic risks for the Amazonian *** significant correlation was found between sampling site and exposure levels to the studied elements,but a significant difference was found between the accumulation of some metals and the position of the fish species in the food *** concentrations of Cr and Hg in fish flesh were found to exceed the Brazilian limits for human *** study shows that current fish consumption patterns can lead to estimated daily intakes of Hg,As and Cr that exceed the oral reference dose,thus posing a toxicological ***,carcinogenic risks may be expected due to the continued exposure to Cr and *** results of this study show that the consumption of wild caught fish in the Amazon region should be ***,continued monitoring of trace element and metal contamination in fish and on the health of the Amazonian population is recommended,particularly for riverine and indigenous communities.

In this paper,we analyze the relationships among innovation efforts,the impacts of these innovations,and the financial performance of Brazilian *** hypothesize that innovation efforts do not directly translate into financial *** to the inherent uncertainty of innovative projects,such efforts must first lead to effective innovation results or impacts before they are capable of contributing to a company's financial *** the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics'(IBGE)comprehensive official databases on innovation and performance,we study 5,025 firms using exploratory factor analysis and structural equation *** results suggest that efforts in innovation possibly generate impacts;however,these impacts do not necessarily imply better financial ***,although firms'efforts may lead to new products,they will not contribute to financial gains in the short term,reflecting the risky and costly nature of *** study aims to contribute to the discussion on firm-level impacts of innovation from the context of a large developing country,since empirical results of the literature are mixed.

Susceptibility of Large Wind Power Plants to Voltage Disturbances-Recommendations to Stakeholders

Sufficient fault ride-through(FRT)of large wind power plants(WPPs)is essential for the operation security of transmission *** majority of studies on FRT do not include all disturbances originating in the transmission system or the disturbances irrelevant to the operation *** on the knowledge of power quality,this paper provides a guide to stakeholders in different aspects of FRT for wind turbines(WTs)and *** paper details the characteristics of the most common disturbances originated in the transmission system,how they propagate to the WT terminals,and how they impact the dynamic behavior of a large *** paper shows that the details of the voltage disturbances,not only in the transmission system,but also at the WT terminals,should be taken into ***,a detailed representation or characterization of voltage dips is important for FRT studies,despite that the simplified models used in the literature are *** paper strongly recommends that distinct events and additional characteristics such as the phase-angle jump and oscillations in the transition segments should be considered in FRT analysis.

Partition coefficient prediction of Baker's yeast invertase in aqueous two phase systems using hybrid group method data handling neural network

A hybrid GMDH neural network model has been developed in order to predict the partition coefficients of invertase from Baker's yeast. ATPS experiments were carried out changing the molar average mass of PEG(1500–6000 Da), p H(4.0–7.0), percentage of PEG(10.0–20.0 w/w), percentage of MgSO_4(8.0–16.0 w/w), percentage of the cell homogenate(10.0–20.0 w/w) and the percentage of MnSO_4(0–5.0 w/w) added as cosolute. The network evaluation was carried out comparing the partition coefficients obtained from the hybrid GMDH neural network with the experimental data using different statistical metrics. The hybrid GMDH neural network model showed better fitting(AARD = 32.752%) as well as good generalization capacity of the partition coefficients of the ATPS than the original GMDH network approach and a BPANN model. Therefore hybrid GMDH neural network model appears as a powerful tool for predicting partition coefficients during downstream processing of biomolecules.

ENSO impacts on litter stocks and water holding capacity in secondary forests in eastern Amazonia

Among the impacts of climate change,there is the intensification of phenomena such as the El Niño South-ern Oscillation(ENSO)responsible for El Niño and La Niñ***,understanding their effects on the functional pro-cesses of forests is ***,this study evaluated the effects of ENSO on litter stock and water holding capac-ity(WHC)in a successional forest in eastern *** occurred in periods with the most rainfall in El Niño(2019)and least in La Niña(2021)*** permanent plots were used to sample *** effects were evident for WHC,higher during El Niñ***,this influence was not clear for litter,as only in the rainy season effects were *** was a positive correlation of WHC with precipitation and humidity,while litter stocks were negatively correlated with temperature and wind *** the subject of this study requires long-term assessments,preliminary results suggests that,depending on the intensity of ENSO,forest functional processes can be strongly impacted and *** conclusion reinforces warnings by the scientific community about the impacts of climate change on the maintenance of litter stocks,decomposition and,consequently,the biogeochemical cycle and essential ecosystem services for the maintenance of Amazonia *** need to develop long-term research to understand the effects of climatic change on litter stocks and water holding capacity is highlighted,especially in Amazonia.

Simulation-Based Approach to Assessing Short-Term Power Variations of PV Power Plants Under Cloud Conditions

The output power variability of photovoltaic (PV) power plants (PVPPs) is one of the major challenges for the operation and control of power systems. The short-term power variations, mainly caused by cloud movements, affect voltage magnitude and frequency, which may degrade power quality and power system reliability. Comprehensive analyses of these power variations are crucial to formulate novel control approaches and assist power system operators in the operation and control of power systems. Thus, this paper proposes a simulation-based approach to assessing short-term power variations caused by clouds in PV power plants. A comprehensive assessment of the short-term power variations in a PV power plant operating under cloud conditions is another contribution of this paper. The performed analysis evaluates the individual impact of multiple weather condition parameters on the magnitude and ramp rate of the power variations. The simulation-based approach synthesizes the solar irradiance time series using three-dimensional fractal surfaces. The proposed assessment approach has shown that the PVPP nominal power, timescale, cloud coverage level, wind speed, period of the day, and shadow intensity level significantly affect the characteristics of the power variations.

A methodology for kinetic modeling of conversion processes is *** proposed approach allows to overcome the lack of molecular detail of the petroleum fractions and to simulate the reactions of the process by means of a two-step *** the first step,a synthetic mixture of molecules representing the feedstock is generated via a molecular reconstruction method,termed SR-REM molecular *** the second step,a kinetic Monte Carlo method,termed stochastic simulation algorithm(SSA),is used to simulate the effect of the conversion reactions on the mixture of *** resulting methodology is applied to the Athabasca vacuum residue *** adequate molecular representation of the vacuum residue is obtained using the SR-REM *** reaction simulations present a good agreement with the laboratory data for Athabasca vacuum residue *** addition,the proposed methodology provides the molecular detail of the vacuum residue conversion throughout the reactions simulations.

Global climate changes have increased temperatures,radiation indexes,and consequently,irregularities in rainfall in mainly tropical countries,considerably hindering plant establishment in recovering degraded *** objective of this study was to evaluate the growth and physiological characteristics of one species of each successional group:pioneer,secondary,and climax when subjected to different light intensities and hydrogel as a soil conditioner during rainy and dry *** experiment was conducted in the ecotone between Brazil’s two largest biomes,the Cerrado and the Amazon in the State of Maranh?*** parameters consisted of three species:Guazuma ulmifolia Lam.(pioneer),Astronium fraxinifolium Schott(secondary),and Cariniana rubra Gardner ex Miers(climax).There were two light intensities:70%and 100%,and two planting conditions:with and without soil conditioner(hydrogel).Gas exchanges were higher during the rainy season;the pioneer and secondary species had greater heights and photosynthetic rates in the dry period;the climax species had the lowest gas exchange and lowest recovery as rainfall *** pioneer and secondary species showed higher physiological plasticity,denoting better adaption to environments with high *** improved the photosynthetic performance of these species in the dry season and in areas with 100%sunlight.
