A review of ecological impacts of global climate change on persistent organic pollutant and mercury pathways and exposures in arctic marine ecosystems

Bioaccumulative and biomagnifying contaminants, such as persistent organic pollutants （POPs） and mercury （Hg）, have for decades been recognized as a health concern in arctic marine biota. In recent years, global climate change （GCC） and related loss of arctic sea ice have been observed to be driving substantial change in arctic ecosystems. This review summarizes findings documenting empirical links between GCC-induced ecological changes and alterations in POP and Hg exposures and pathways in arctic marine ecosystems. Most of the studies have reported changes in POP or Hg concentrations in tissue in relation to GCC-induced changes in species trophic interactions. These studies have typically focused on the role of changes in abun- dance, habitat range or accessibility of prey species, particularly in relation to sea ice changes. Yet, the ecological change that re- suited in contaminant trend changes has often been unclear or assumed. Other studies have successfully used chemical tracers, such as stable nitrogen and carbon isotope ratios and fatty acid signatures to link such ecological changes to contaminant level variations or trends. Lower sea ice linked-diet changes/variation were associated with higher contaminant levels in some popula- tions of polar bears, ringed seals, and thick-billed murres, but the influence of changing trophic interactions on POP levels and trends varied widely in both magnitude and direction. We suggest that future research in this new area of GCC-linked ecotox- icology should focus on routine analysis of ancillary ecological metrics with POP and Hg studies, simultaneous consideration of the multiple mechanisms by which GCC and contaminant interactions can occur, and targeted research on changing exposures and toxicological effects in species known to be sensitive to both GCC and contaminants [Current Zoology 61 （4）： 617-628, 2015].

Response evaluation of chemotherapy in metastatic colorectal cancer by contrast enhanced ultrasound

AIM： To evaluate whether contrast enhanced ultra- sound （CEUS） might also be used for response predic- tion and early response evaluation in patients receiving bevacizumab based chemotherapy for metastasized colorectal ***： Thirty consecutive patients with non prima- ry resectable liver metastases from colorectal cancer underwent CEUS before treatment （CEUS date 1） and before the second （CEUS date 2） and fourth （CEU5 date 3） cycle of bevacizumab based chemotherapy. Three parameters [PEAK, Time to peak （l-I-P） and RISE RATE]were correlated with radiological ***： For neoadjuvant purpose a reduction of tu- mour mass was required to assume clinical response. Based on these response criteria there was a significant （P 〈 0.001） correlation in TTP between metastases of responders （9.08 s） and non-responders （14.76 s） ar- chived on CEUS date 1. By calculating a standardized quotient （metastases divided by normal liver tissue） we were able to define a cut off, predicting response with a sensitivity of 92.3 % and a specificity of 100 %. To reflect a palliative intention only those patients with progressive disease were classified as non-responders. In this stetting -FI-P was also significantly （P 〈 0.01） dif- ferent between responders and non-responders. In con- trast, Peak and Rise rate did not show any significant difference between responder and non-responder. CONCLUSION： CEUS might serve as a surrogate mark- er to predict treatment response in patients with me- tastasized colorectal cancer who receive antiangiogenic therapy.

Synergistic effects of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks(ZIFs)with different transition metals on intumescent flame-retarded polypropylene composites:A comparative study

The use of intumescent flame retardants(IFRs)is considered an environmentally friendly and cost-effective strategy to suppress potential fire hazards from synthetic ***,some conventional IFRs are neither efficient in developing a thermally stable char layer nor reducing the release of toxic byproducts during polymer *** this work,we aim to discuss the effects of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks(ZIFs)on synergistically improving the flame retardancy behaviors in polypropylene(PP)composites,including thermal degradation(evolved gas analysis),free radical reactions in the gaseous phase(in-situ chemiluminescent image analysis),and carbonaceous structure in the condensed phase(micro-morphology and composition analysis).It is found that the transition metals in ZIFs can catalytically accelerate the crosslinking reaction at a lower initial temperature and decrease the amount of hydrocarbon volatiles in the gaseous *** ignited,the embedded ZIFs can firstly bridge adjacent phosphorus chains in the polymer matrix to expand crosslinking degrees and then they are anchored in the developed N-doped phospho-carbonaceous networks after *** a result,more compact char residue structures are observed in the condensed phase for ZIF-reinforced *** example,by replacing 2 wt%of IFR with ZIF-67,the peak heat release rate,peak smoke production rate,and peak CO production rate are reduced by 69%,80%,and 72%,respectively,when compared to the conventional *** results indicate an excellent solution to resolve inherent fire hazards associated with IFRs in polymers and achieve necessary efficiency for industrial *** also provides a new strategy for determining flammability characteristics and combustion mechanisms of polymer composites using in-situ chemiluminescence analysis.

Tunable colors and conductivity by electroless growth of Cu/Cu2O particles on sol-gel modified cellulose

Development of colored surfaces by formation of nano-structured aggregates is a widely used strategy in nature to color lightweight structures (e.g. butterflies) without the use of dye pigments. The deposition of nanoscale particles mimics nature in it’s approach coloring surfaces. This work presents sol-gel modification of cellulose surfaces used to form a template for growth of Cu/Cu2O core–shell particles with defined size-distributions. Besides improving the adhesion of the deposited particulate material, the sol-gel matrix serves as a template for the control of particle sizes of the Cu/Cu2O structures, and as a consequence of particle size variation the surface color is tunable. As an example, red color was achieved with an average particle size of 35 nm, and shifts gradually to blue appearance when particles have grown to 80 nm on the sol-gel modified fabric. The copper concentration on representative fabrics is kept low to avoid modifying the textile characteristics and were all in the range of 150–170 mg per g of cellulose material. As a result of copper deposition on the surface of the material, the cellulose fabric also became electrically conductive. Remarkably, the electrical conductivity was found to be dependent on the average particle sizes of the deposits and thus related to the change in observed color. The generation of color by growth of nano-sized particles on sol-gel templates provides a highly promising approach to stain surfaces by physical effects without use of synthetic colorants, which opens a new strategy to improve environmental profile of coloration.

Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt vs conservative treatment for recurrent ascites:A propensity score matched comparison

BACKGROUND Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt(TIPS) placement is an effective intervention for recurrent tense ascites. Some studies show an increased risk of acute on chronic liver failure(ACLF) associated with TIPS placement. It is not clear whether ACLF in this context is a consequence of TIPS or of the pre-existing liver *** To better understand the risks of TIPS in this challenging setting and to compare them with those of conservative *** Two hundred and fourteen patients undergoing their first TIPS placement for recurrent tense ascites at our tertiary-care center between 2007 and 2017 were identified(TIPS group). Three hundred and ninety-eight patients of the same time interval with liver cirrhosis and recurrent tense ascites not undergoing TIPS placement(No TIPS group) were analyzed as a control group. TIPS indication,diagnosis of recurrent ascites, further diagnoses and clinical findings were obtained from a database search and patient records. The in-hospital mortality and ACLF incidence of both groups were compared using 1:1 propensity score matching and multivariate logistic *** After propensity score matching, the TIPS and No TIPS groups were comparable in terms of laboratory values and ACLF incidence at hospital admission. There was no detectable difference in mortality(TIPS: 11/214, No TIPS 13/214). During the hospital stay, ACLF occurred more frequently in the TIPS group than in the No TIPS group(TIPS: 70/214, No TIPS: 57/214, P = 0.04). This effect was confined to patients with severely impaired liver function at hospital admission as indicated by a significant interaction term of Child score and TIPS placement in multivariate logistic regression. The TIPS group had a lower ACLF incidence at Child scores < 8 points and a higher ACLF incidence at ≥ 11 points. Human impacts on Earth's ecosystems have greatly intensified in the last decades. This is reflected in unexpected disturbance events, as well as new and increasing socio-economic demands, all of which are affecting the resilience of forest ecosystems worldwide and the provision of important ecosystem services. This Anthropocene era is forcing us to reconsider past and current forest management and silvicultural practices, and search for new ones that are more flexible and better at dealing with the increasing uncertainty brought about by these accelerating and cumulative global changes. Here, we briefly review the focus and limitations of past and current forest management and silvicultural practices mainly as developed in Europe and North America. We then discuss some recent promising concepts, such as managing forests as complex adaptive systems, and approaches based on resilience, functional diversity, assisted migration and multi-species plantations, to propose a novel approach to integrate the functionality of species-traits into a functional complex network approach as a flexible and multi-scale way to manage forests for the Anthropocene. This approach takes into consideration the high level of uncertainty associated with future environmental and societal changes. It relies on the quantification and dynamic monitoring of functional diversity and complex network indices to manage forests as a functional complex network. Using this novel approach, the most efficient forest management and silvicultural practices can be determined, as well as where, at what scale, and at what intensity landscape-scale resistance, resilience and adaptive capacity of forests to global changes can be improved.
