Detection of Breaking Waves Using X-Band Pulse Radar in the Nearshore Region

An X-band pulsed Doppler microwave radar has been used to determine the characteristics of breaking waves. Field experiments were conducted at the Shuang-Si estuary in the north of Taiwan in the winter of 2005. Analyses on maxima radar cross section and Doppler frequency shift are done to characterize wave breaking zones. Based on observations of breaking waves, the wave breaking zones are shown to be located at water depths of 1.8 to 2.2 m in the experimental site. In general, the results indicate that a radar system has the potential to delineate the spatial variation of breaking waves clearly and that this is sufficient to achieve a measurement operation for near-shore air-sea interaction events.

Numerical study of flow and heat transfer during oscillatory blood flow in diseased arteries in presence of magnetic fields

A problem motivated by the investigation of the heat and mass transfer in the unsteady magnetohydrodynamic （MHD） flow of blood through a vessel is solved numerically when the lumen of the vessel has turned into the porous structure. The time-dependent permeability and the oscillatory suction velocity are considered. The computational results are presented graphically for the velocity, the temperature, and the concentration fields for various values of skin friction coefficients, Nusselt numbers, and Sherwood numbers. The study reveals that the flow is appreciably influenced by the presence of a magnetic field and also by the value of the Grashof number.

Molecular level simulations on multi-component systems --a morphology prediction method

The crystal morphology grown from a solution composed of an organic solvent, solute and additive can be predicted reliably by a computational method. Modeling the supersaturated solution as liquid phase is achieved by employing commercial software. The molecular composition of this solution is a required input parameter. The face specific diffusion coefficient of the solid （crystal surface） and liquid （solution） system is determined using the molecular dynamics procedure. The obtained diffusion coefficient is related to the specific face growth rate via the attachment energy of the pure morphology. The significant improvements are achieved in the morphology prediction because the investigation on the face growth rates in a complex growth environment （as multi-component solutions with additives） can be carried out based on the diffusion coefficients.

Transhiatal versus transthoracic esophagectomy for esophageal cancer

Esophageal cancer continues to represent a formidable challenge for both patients and clinicians. Relative 5-year survival rates for patients have improved over the past three decades, probably linked to a combination of improved surgical outcomes, progress in systemic chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and the increasing acceptance of multimodality treatment. Surgical treatment remains a fundamental component of the treatment of localized esophageal adenocarcinoma. Multiple approaches have been described for esophagectomy, which can be thematically grouped under two major categories: either transthoracic or transhiatal. The main controversy rests on whether a more extended resection through thoracotomy provides superior oncological outcomes as opposed to resection with relatively limited morbidity and mortality through a transhiatal approach. After numerous trials have addressed these issues, neither approach has consistently proven to be superior to the other one, and both can provide excellent short-term results in the hands of experienced surgeons. Moreover, the available literature suggests that experience of the surgeonand hospital in the surgical management of esophageal cancer is an important factor for operative morbidity and mortality rates, which could supersede the type of approach selected. Oncological outcomes appear to be similar after both procedures.

Site Selective Excitation and Energy Transfer in LiKGdF_5 crystal co-doped with Er^(3+) and Tb (3+)

crystals of LiKGdF 5∶Er 3+, Tb 3+ grown by the hydrothermal synthesis technique with concentrations of 2% and 0.4% were analysed. By using site selective excitation measured at low temperature, luminescence and excitation spectra from Er 3+ and Tb 3+ ions embedded in LiKGdF 5 were clearly separated. The lifetimes of the emitting levels 4S 3/2 of Er 3+ and 5D 4 of Tb 3+ were also determined. Following the site selective spectroscopy study, the dominant energy transfer process from Tb 3+ to Er 3+ in the crystal was then investigated via transient experiments.

One-step multi-compositional oxidation of YSi alloy:Experiments and ab initio computation

YSi alloy is a promising candidate as oxidation resistant coatings for both the bond coat of environmental barrier coatings(EBcs)and anti-ablation coatings at a high temperature of∼1300℃.In this study,a one-step multi-compositional oxidation by rapid heating oxidation mode is proposed to reduce the oxidation rate by 3.6 times compared to conventional slow heating oxidation *** show that preferentially formed Y_(2)O_(3) oxide initiates a multi-step oxidation,produces a cracking and porous oxides,and thereby resulting in a fast oxidation with *** one-step multi-compositional oxidation with a compact and dense Y_(2)Si_(2)O_(7)scale contributes to the much better oxidation resistance for rapid heating oxidation mode of YSi *** stable formation of Y_(2)Si_(2)O_(7)scale is comprehensively understood by the energy barrier,charge density and electronic level based on density functional *** study demonstrates a promising application of YSi alloy by rapid heating oxidation mode.

Influence of texture and microstructure on mechanical properties of high-strength wrought magnesium alloy AZ80

Monotonic (tensile and compressive) and high cycle fatigue properties of the forged magnesium alloy AZ80 were investigated by using specimens with load axis parallel to longitude (L) or transverse (T) direction. A pronounced directional anisotropy in monotonic tests was observed in AZ80, i.e. the yield stress in T-direction is significantly lower than that in L direction. However, the directional anisotropy is absent in fatigue, fatigue strengths in both L- and T-directions are essentially equal. The absence of directional anisotropy in fatigue is possibly associated with the microstructure of AZ80. A homogeneous single phase structure probably alleviates the directional anisotropy of fatigue properties of the wrought magnesium alloy.
