Successful pregnancy and long-term, post-natal maternal and offspring cardiac, vascular and metab.lic health require key maternal cardiovascular adaptations over gestation. Within the pregnant decidualizing uterus, coordinated vascular, immunological and stromal cell changes occur. Considerab.e attention has b.en given to the roles of uterine natural killer （uNK） cells in initiating decidual spiral arterial remodeling, a process normally completed b. mid-gestation in mice and in humans. However, leukocyte roles in much earlier, region specific, decidual vascular remodeling are now b.ing defined. Interest in immune cell-promoted vascular remodeling is driven b. vascular ab.rrations that are reported in human gestational complications such as infertility, recurrent spontaneous ab.rtion, preeclampsia （PE） and fetal growth restriction. Appropriate maternal cardiovascular responses during pregnancy protect mothers and their children from later cardiovascular disease risk elevation. One of the earliest uterine responses to pregnancy in species with hemochorial placentation is stromal cell decidualization, which creates unique niches for angiogenesis and leukocyte recruitment. In early decidua b.salis, the aspect of the implantation site that will cradle the developing placenta and provide the major b.ood vessels to support mature placental functions, leukocytes are greatly enriched and display specialized properties. UNK cells, the most ab.ndant leukocyte sub.et in early decidua b.salis, have angiogenic ab.lities and are essential for normal early decidual angiogenesis. The regulation of uNK cells and their roles in determining maternal and progeny cardiovascular health over ore^nancv and PostPartum are discussed.

Effect of Nutrient Restriction on Social Transmission of Food Preferences Depends on Nutrient and Species

For omnivores to determine whether an unfamiliar item is an appropriate food, they could rely on personal information from sampling it themselves or rely on less risky ob.ervation of whether other individuals eat the item. Availab.lity of information ab.ut food from social companions in group-living species is one of the b.nefits of group life. Adults of solitary-living species, however, seem typically less likely to rely on social information ab.ut food choice. If an individual faced a nutritional deficit, it would seem to increase the value of pub.ic information. This study addresses whether dietary restriction from certain nutrients (sodium, potassium, protein, carb.hydrates) affects reliance on information ab.ut food from conspecifics. Without nutrient restriction, group-living Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus) preferred the diet that they smelled on the b.eath of a conspecific demonstrator, b.t solitary-living Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) avoided it. Protein restriction yielded similar results as measured one hour into a diet choice test. Potassium restriction, however, reversed the pattern: rats avoided the demonstrator’s diet b.t hamsters preferred it. Clearly, the valence of social information depended on the nutrient from which individuals were restricted and the species under study. This could b. related to the contrasting social organization that memb.rs of each species generate. Neither species relied on social information ab.ut the availab.lity of a nutrient from which they were restricted if they could taste that nutrient for themselves (sodium, carb.hydrates).

Metformin is among the most prescrib.d pharmaceuticals in many countries,and as a result has shown up in b.osolids derived from municipal wastewater treatment that are destined for land *** humans taking metformin,the effects include reduced glucose uptake in the intestine,a reduction in gluconeogenesis,increased oxidation of fatty acids,and reduced fatty acid *** effects of metformin on soil-dwelling organisms are not well *** study tested the effects of metformin exposure(0,10,40,160,640μg g^(-1))on the earthworm(***)at four time points(6 h,2 d,7 d,and 14 d)using GC-MS to reveal sub.lethal effects and elucidate potential modes of action for *** were no mortalities ob.erved,and earthworms exposed to the highest concentrations(160 and 640μg g^(-1))gained weight relative to the control on days 7 and *** reductions on day 7 were ob.erved for glucose and malic acid(consistent with a reduction in gluconeogenesis),and for palmitic and margaric acid(consistent with increased oxidation and reduced synthesis of fatty acids).Lactic acid ranked first and second among canonicals 1 and 2 respectively and led to significant differences in discriminant scores across concentration and *** levels increased to equal or greater than the control on day 14,likely caused b. reduced exposure as metformin is reported to b. readily transformed b. microorganisms under aerob.c *** ob.ervations were consistent with the known effects of metformin in humans,and suggests that a similar mode of action exists in earthworms.

Neurovascular interactions are crucial for the normal development of the central nervous system. To study suchinteractions in primary cultures, we developed a procedure to simultaneously isolate neural progenitor and endothelialcell fractions from emb.yonic mouse b.ains. Depending on the culture conditions endothelial cells were found to favormaintenance of the neuroprogenitor phenotype through the production of solub.e factors, or to promote neuronal differ-entiation of neural progenitors through direct contact. These apparently opposing effects could reflect differential cellularinteractions needed for the proper development of the b.ain.
