distribution of Prunus serotina Ehrh. in North America and Its Invasion in Europe

Black cherry (Prunus serotina Ehrh.) is a native North American plant species. It includes five subspecies and is currently invasive in Europe. Since pre-Hispanic times, black cherry has been known and used by American inhabitants, and its botanical use was reported in the 19th century. The present study describes the taxonomic richness and taxonomic diversity of the species based on data from 554 taxonomically confirmed collection sites. Additionally, 19 climatic parameters were used to estimate the current and future potential distribution patterns of black cherry applying a climate change model to North America and Europe. Regions of northeast Mexico, northwestern Mexico, the Great American Basin, and the Mississippi River-Great lakes region in the USA are shown as areas where taxa of P. serotina are present. The potential distribution model of black cherry in North America shows a continuous pattern starting in the Center of Mexico and following both main Mexican mountain ranges (Sierra Madre Oriental and Sierra Madre Occidental). The pattern extends following two different paths throughout northern Mexico toward the Rocky Mountains and the Appalachians in the USA. Based on the NOAA-CCM3 climatic change model, decreased rainfall in wetlands will result in changes in future patterns in America. When applied to Europe, our model shows more extensive regions and more accurately than previous estimations;thus, the current potential distribution of the species includes important areas in the western part of the continent. The potential effect of climate change on P. serotina distribution suggests new and wider areas of possible invasion of this species throughout the continent mainly in France, Germany, and Italy. We suggest take into account the whole American taxa included in this species in the end to study its potential invasion in Europe and establishing suitable control strategies.

Evaluation of carbon-based nanosorbents synthesised by ethylene decomposition on stainless steel substrates as potential sequestrating materials for nickel ions in aqueous solution

The present work covers the preparation of carbon-based nanosorbents by ethylene decomposition on stainless steel mesh without the use of external catalyst for the treatment of water containing nickel ions （Ni2＋）. The reaction temperature was varied from 650 to 850℃, while reaction time and ethylene to nitrogen flow ratio were maintained at 30 rain and 1：1 cma/min, respectively. Results show that nanosorbents synthesised at a reaction temperature of 650℃ had the smallest average diameter （75 nm）, largest BET surface area （68.95 m2/g） and least amount of impurity （0.98 wt.% Fe）. A series of batch sorption tests were performed to evaluate the effects of initial pH, initial metal concentration and contact time on Ni2~ removal by the nanosorbents. The equilibrium data fitted well to Freundlich isotherm. The kinetic data were best correlated to a pseudo second-order model indicating that the process was of chemisorption type. Further analysis by the Boyd kinetic model revealed that boundary layer diffusion was the controlling step. This primary study suggests that the prepared material with Freundiich constants compared well with those in the literature, is a promising sorbent for the sequestration of Ni2＋ in aqueous solutions.

The formation of Fe-N compounds by laser nitriding in an atmospheric ambient was reported. By CW-CO2 laser irradiation on pure ferrite iron in the atmospheric ambient, Fe-N compounds (including Fe2N, .Fe3AT and Fe4N) are formed as a result of a laser-enhanced and temperature-enhanced reactions. The samples were analyzed with X-ray diffraction. It is found that the laser power density, scanning speed and nitrogen temperature are the main factors influencing the formation of Fe-N compounds. Nitrogen can be activated by pre-heating at some temperature. Nitrogen activation and sample surface melting by CW-CO2 laser greatly enhance the reaction between the sample surface and nitrogen beam. After annealing at 500℃for 3h, some Fe2N and Fe3N converted into more stable Fe4N.

This study aimed to characterize the physical-chemical and biological properties of pectin(PC)/chia seed mucilage(CM)***/CM[100/0(control),80/20%,60/40%,and 40/60%w/w]membranes were prepared using the casting *** membranes(PC/CM)were thin,yellow,lightly opaque(≈10%)and capable of blocking light UVB(between 66 at 52%).SEM analysis showed the presence of aggregates in the shape of a sphere(≈13μm)and ovoid(≈25μm).The proportion of 80/20 showed an increase in tensile strength(29%)and elastic modulus(19%)when compared to the *** analysis exhibited intermolecular interactions between PCPC,PC-CM,and CM-CM in the *** thermal analysis(600°C)showed a slight improvement in the percentage of residual mass-loss of 3.31%(80/20)that *** 40/60 membrane showed the lowest percentage of hemolysis(2.94%)but limited human albumin adsorption *** results suggested that the blend PC/CM may be considered as a biomaterial for medical applications.

Because Si is a noncarbide forming element, a multiphase microstructure consisting of ferrite, bainite, and retained austenite, at room temperature, can be formed by controlling the thermomechanical process strictly. The cooling schedules must be restricted by the formation of pearlite and cementite. In the present article, a new integrated mathematical model for prediction of microstructure evolution during controlled rolling and controlled cooling is developed for a typical kind of low carbon Si-Mn TRIP steel, which consists of temperature simulation, recrystallization, and transformation models. The influence of Si contents has been thoroughly investigated. The calculated results indicate that Si retards recrystallization, restrains austenite grain growth as well as accelerates polygonal ferrite transformation.

Acetaminophen and zinc phosphide for lethal management of invasive lizards Ctenosaura similis

Reducing populations of invasive lizards through trapping and shooting is feasible in many cases but effective inte-grated management relies on a variety of tools, including toxicants. In Florida, using wild-caught non-native black spiny-tailed iguanas Ctenosaura similis, we screened acetaminophen and zinc phosphide to determine their suitability for effective population management of this prolific invasive species. Of the animals that received acetaminophen, none died except at the highest test dose, 240 mg per lizard, which is not practical for field use. Zinc phosphide produced 100% mortality at dose levels as little as 25 mg per lizard, equivalent to about 0.5% in bait which is lower than currently used in commercial baits for commensal rodent con-trol. We conclude that zinc phosphide has potential as a useful tool for reducing populations of invasive lizards such as the black spiny-tailed iguana provided target-selective delivery methods are developed [Current Zoology 57 （5）： 625~529, 2011].

Enhancing the strength of Al-Zn-Mg alloys is critical to the weight-lightening of structural components in the application of high-speed trains and aerospace industries,while high stress corrosion cracking(SCC)susceptibility of Al-Zn-Mg alloys(especially the alloy with high recrystallization fraction)with high strength makes it *** this study,the influence of tensile stress-aging coupled with natural aging pre-treatment on the mechanical properties and SCC resistance of Al-Zn-Mg alloy with high recrystallization fraction has been *** results show that tensile stress-aging at 160℃can inhibit the dissolution of clusters/Guinier-Preston(GP)zones formed during long-term natural aging pre-treatment,which increases the number density of matrix precipitates(MPts),narrow the width of precipitate free zone(PFZ),and dramatically improve the mechanical properties of the experimental Al-Zn-Mg ***,the precipitation of the high density of MPts within the matrix will assume a large number of solute atoms during artificial aging,which will reduce the supplement of solute atoms to grain *** a result,the volume of anodic active grain boundary precipitates(GBPs)and the content of free solute atoms at grain boundaries are reduced,which reduces the possibility of initial nucleation and propagation of SCC *** coupled treatment method proposed in this study proves efficient in resolving the contradiction between the strength and SCC resistance in Al-Zn-Mg alloy.

Two-stage double peaks ageing and its effect on stress corrosion cracking susceptibility of Al-Zn-Mg alloy

different artificial two-stage ageing behaviors and their effect on stress corrosion cracking （SCC） susceptibility of AI-Zn-Mg alloy have been investigated. The experimental results show that two hardness peaks present on the second-stage ageing-hardening curve when the first-stage ageing is dealt with comparatively lower temperature than the conventional one. The first peak is caused by dispersive and evenly distributed G.P. zones, while η ′phases and coarsened G.P. zones contribute to the second peak. Tensile strength of experimental alloy raises 9.6% （33.2 MPa） and SCC susceptibility decreases 38.9% by applying the second peak ageing regime instead of conventional T73. AI-Zn-Mg alloy obtains high strength and SCC resistance due to its finely dispersive matrix precipitates （MPts）, coarsened and discontinuous grain boundary precipitates （GBPs）, as well as the narrow precipitate free zone （PFZ） in the second peak ageing condition. 2017 Published by Elsevier ltd on behalf of The editorial office of journal of Materials Science ＆ Technology.
