Bio-Fertilizer,Ground Magnesium Limestone and Basalt Applications May Improve Chemical Properties of Malaysian Acid Sulfate Soils and Rice Growth

Acid sulfate soils are normally not suitable for crop production unless they are appropriately ameliorated. An experiment was conducted in a glasshouse to enhance the growth of rice, variety MR219, planted on an acid sulfate soil using various soil *** soil was collected from Semerak, Kelantan, Malaysia. Ground magnesium limestone(GML), bio-fertilizer, and basalt(each 4t ha-1) were added either alone or in combinations into the soil in pots 15 d before transplanting. Nitrogen, P and potash were applied at 150, 30, and 60 kg ha-1, respectively. Three seven-day-old rice seedlings were transplanted into each pot. The soil had a p H of 3.8 and contained organic C of 21 g kg-1, N of 1.2 g kg-1, available P of 192 mg kg-1, exchangeable K of 0.05 cmol c kg-1,and exchangeable Al of 4.30 cmol c kg-1, with low amounts of exchangeable Ca and Mg(0.60 and 0.70 cmol c kg-1). Bio-fertilizer treatment in combination with GML resulted in the highest p H of 5.4. The presence of high Al or Fe concentrations in the control soil without amendment severely affected the growth of rice. At 60 d of growth, higher plant heights, tiller numbers and leaf chlorophyll contents were obtained when the bio-fertilizer was applied individually or in combination with GML compared to the control. The presence of beneficial bacteria in bio-fertilizer might produce phytohormones and organic acids that could enhance plant growth and subsequently increase nutrient uptake by rice. Hence, it can be concluded that addition of bio-fertilizer and GML improved rice growth by increasing soil p H which consequently eliminated Al and/or Fe toxicity prevalent in the acid sulfate soil.

Micropolar theories present an excellent mechanism for exploring new non-Newtonian materials processing provides a stimulating area for process engineering *** by area for process engineering applications,the present article presents the scope offinite element method in solving a mathematical model for magnetohydrodynamic,incom-pressible,dissipative and chemically reacting micropolar fluid flow and heat and mass transferthrough a porous medium from an inclined plate with heat sourcelsink has been *** this purpose,the set of governing equations have been reframed and put into adimensionless form under the assumption of low Reynolds number with appropriatedimensionless quantities that can fit into the finite element *** addition tohighlighting the operational aspects of weighted residual scheme,a detailed investigation hasbeen camied out on the associated flow stnucture,heat and mass *** evolution ofmany multi-physical parameters in these variables is illustrated *** elementcode is benchmarked with the results reported in the literature to check the validity andaccuracy under some limiting cases and excellent agreement is seen with published solutionsand results of skin friction coefficient,couple stress coefficient,Nusselt number and Sherwoodnumber for invoked parameter are tabulated which shows that increasing heat sourcelsinkparameter elevates *** reaction parameter reduces velocity and concentra-tion *** number enhances as chemical reaction parameter increases but reverse phenomena is observed in case of inclination of ***,a gridindependency test has been caried out for different grid sizes which has proven this methodis adequate.

This article deals with boundary layer analysis of magnetohydrodynamics on an unsteady chemically reactive micropolar rotating fluid flow past a semi-infinite vertical plate with been developed under Boussinesq *** governing partial differential equations are transformed into a set of coupled partial differential equations using suitable dimensionless *** resultant equations are solved numerically using variational finite element method.A parametric study illustrating the influence of different pertinent parameters is performed and the numerical results for translational velocity,microrotation velocity,temperature and concentration distributions near the boundary layers are discussed and presented graphically for the parametric ***,the skin-friction,wall couple stress,surface heat transfer and mass transfer rate dependency on the emerging thermo-physical parameters are also *** finite element code is benchmarked with the results reported in the literature to check the validity and accuracy under some limiting cases and excellent agreement with published solutions is achieved.

Antifungal activity of selected Malaysian honeys:a comparison with Manuka honey

Objective:To evaluate four selected Malaysian honey samples from different floral sources(Gelam,Tualang,Nenas and Acacia)for their ability to inhibit the growth of fungi and yeast strains(Candida albicans,Aspergillus niger,Epidermophyton floccosum,Microsporum gypseum,Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes).Methods:The broth microdilution method was used to assess the antifungal activity of honey against yeasts at different concentrations ranging from 0.01%to 70%(v/v).Minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC)of the honeys were determined by visual inspection and spectrophotometric *** fungicidal concentration test was performed by further sub-culturing from the plates which showed no visible growth in the MIC assay onto Sabroud dextrose ***:All tested Malaysian honeys except Gelam showed antifungal activity against all species analysed,with the MIC ranging from 25%(v/v)to 50%(v/v)while MIC of Manuka honey ranged between 21%to 53%(v/v).Candida albicans was more susceptible to honey than other species ***:Locally produced honeys exhibited antifungal activity which is less than or equal to that of Manuka *** data showed evidence in support of the therapeutic uses of Malaysian honeys.
