Inorganic matter in rice husk derived carbon and its effect on the capacitive performance

Transport model for shale gas well leakage through the surrounding fractured zones of a longwall mine

The environmental risks associated with casing deformation in unconventional(shale)gas wells positioned in abutment pillars of longwall mines is a concern to many in the mining and gas well *** the recent interest in shale exploration and the proximity to longwall mining in Southwestern pennsylvania,the risk to mine workers could be catastrophic as fractures in surrounding strata create pathways for transport of leaked ***,this research by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health(NIOSH)presents an analytical model of the gas transport through fractures in a low permeable *** derived equations are used to conduct parametric studies of specific transport conditions to understand the influence of stratum geology,fracture lengths,and the leaked gas properties on subsurface *** results indicated that the prediction that the subsurface gas flux decreases with an increase in fracture length is specifically for a non-gassy *** sub-transport trend could be significantly impacted by the stratum gas generation rate within specific fracture lengths,which emphasized the importance of the stratum *** findings provide new insights for improved understanding of subsurface gas transport to ensure mine safety.

Magnetic sensorless sensing experiments of the plasma horizontal positionhave been carried out in the superconducting tokamak HT-7. The horizontal position is calculatedfrom the vertical field coil current and voltage without using signals of magnetic probes placednearby a plasma. The calculations are focused on the ripple frequency component of the power *** is no drift problem with the time integration of magnetic probe signals. The error of thederived plasma position is lower than 2% of the plasma minor radius.

Clinical efficacy of the Ankle Spacer for the treatment of multiple secondary osteochondral lesions of the talus

BACKGROUND The Ankle Spacer was developed as a joint-sparing alternative to invasive endstage ***,there are no clinical studies on the Ankle *** To describe the operative technique and the clinical efficacy of the Ankle Spacer for the treatment of multiple,cystic osteochondral lesions of the talus in patients with failed prior operative *** This is a prospective study during which patients were assessed preoperatively,at 2-and 6 wk,and at 3,6,12 and 24 mo *** with multiple,cystic or large(≥15 mm)osteochondral lesions of the talus after failed prior surgery were *** primary outcome measure was the numeric rating scale(NRS)for pain during walking at 2 years *** outcome measures included the NRS in rest and during stair climbing,the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society Hindfoot Score,the Foot and Ankle Outcome Score,the Short-Form 36 physical and mental component scale,and the Range of Motion(ROM).Radiographic evaluations were conducted to evaluate prosthetic loosening and *** rates and complications were also *** Two patients underwent an Ankle Spacer implantation on the *** NRS during walking improved from 6 and 7 preoperatively to 2 and 2 points postoperatively at 2 years,in patient 1 and 2,*** other patient-reported outcome measures also improved *** were no re-operations nor *** imaging showed no loosening of the implant and no change of implant *** The Ankle Spacer showed clinically relevant pain reduction during walking,improvement in clinical outcomes as assessed with pROMs,and no complications or *** treatment option may evolve as a joint-sparing alternative to invasive end-stage surgeries.

Improvement in Hurst exponent estimation and its application to financial markets

This research aims to improve the efficiency in estimating the Hurst exponent in financial time series.A new procedure is developed based on equality in distribution and is applicable to the estimation methods of the Hurst *** show how to use this new procedure with three of the most popular algorithms(generalized Hurst exponet,total triangles area,and fractal dimension)in the *** show that this new approach improves the accuracy of the original methods,mainly for longer *** second contribution of this study is that we show how to use this methodology to test whether the series is self-similar,constructing a confidence interval for the Hurst exponent for which the series satisfies this ***,we present an empirical application of this new procedure to stocks of the S&p500 *** to previous contributions,we consider this to be relevant to financial literature,as it helps to avoid inappropriate interpretations of market efficiency that can lead to erroneous decisions not only by market participants but also by policymakers.

Efficient Calculation of Absorption Spectra in Solution:Approaches for Selecting Representative Solvent Configurations and for Reducing the Number of Explicit Solvent Molecules

Dye-sensitized solar cells(DSSCs) are one of the most promising renewable energy technologies. Charge transfer and charge transport are pivotal processes in DSSCs, which govern solar energy capture and conversion. These processes can be probed using modern electronic structure methods. Because of the heterogeneity and complexity of the local environment of a chromophore in DSSCs(such as solvatochromism and chromophore aggregation), a part of the solvation environment should be treated explicitly during the calculation. However, because of the high computational cost and unfavorable scaling with the number of electrons of high-level quantum mechanical methods, approaches to explicitly treat the local environment need careful consideration. Two problems must be tackled to reduce computational cost. First, the number of configurations representing the solvent distribution should be limited as much as possible. Second, the size of the explicit region should be kept relatively small. The purpose of this study is to develop efficient computational approaches to select representative configurations and to limit the explicit solvent region to reduce the computational cost for later(higher-level) quantum mechanical calculations. For this purpose, an ensemble of solvent configurations around a 1-methyl-8-oxyquinolinium betaine(QB) dye molecule was generated using Monte Carlo simulations and molecular mechanics force fields. Then, a fitness function was developed using data from inexpensive electronic structure calculations to reduce the number of configurations. Specific solvent molecules were also selected for explicit treatment based on a distance criterion, and those not selected were treated as background charges. The configurations and solvent molecules selected proved to be good representatives of the entire ensemble; thus, expensive electronic structure calculations need to be performed only on this subset of the system, which significantly reduces the computational co
