Coesite inclusions, together with omphacite, jadeite, garnet and phengite inclusions, were identified in zircons separates from almost all gneissic core samples of pre-pilot drillhole CCSD-PP2 by the Laser Raman spectros-copy and the cathodoluminescence method. These data indicate that gneissic rocks consisting of paragneisses and or-thogneisses ubiquitously experienced UHP metamorphism. This research may be of great significance for an in-depth study of the subduction-exhumation mechanism of the Sulu UHP metamorphic belt and selecting the drilling site for the Chinese Continental Scientific Drilling Project.

Tracing the boundary between UHP and HP metamorphic belts in the southwestern Sulu terrane, eastern China: Evidence from mineral inclusions in zircons from metamorphic rocks

＜正＞ Laser Raman spectroscopy and cathodoluminescence （CL） images reveal that most zircons separated from paragneiss and orthogneiss in drillhole CCSD-PP2 at Donghai, southwestern Sulu terrane retain low-P mineral-bearing inherited cores, ultrahigh-pressure （UHP） mineral-bearing mantles and low-P mineral-bearing （e. g. quartz） rims. SHRIMP U-Pb analyses of these zoned zircons identify three discrete and meaningful age groups: Proterozoic protolith ages （＞ 680 Ma） are recorded in the inherited cores, the UHP metamorphic event in the coesite-bearing mantles occurred at 231 ±4 Ma, and the late amphibolite-facies retrogressive overprint in the quartz-bearing rims was at 211 ±4 Ma. Thus, Neopoterozoic supracrustal protoliths of the Sulu UHP rocks were subducted to mantle depths in the Middle Triassic, and exhumed to mid-crustal levels in the Late Triassic. The exhumation rate deduced from the SHRIMP data and metamorphic P-T conditions is 5.0 km/Ma. Exhumation of the Sulu UHP terrane may have resulted from buoyancy forces after slab break-off at mantle depths.

Zircon SHRIMP dating of granite from Qaidamshan,NW China

＜正＞ The southwestern Sulu terrane, eastern China is divided into four fault-bounded lithological units. From northwest to southeast, they are: （1） orthogneiss unit （Unit Ⅰ）, （2） supracrustal rock unit （Unit Ⅱ）, （3） kyanite-bearing quartzite - marble unit （Unit Ⅲ） and （4） paragneiss - schist unit （Unit Ⅳ）. Inclusions of index minerals in zircon separates from more than 90 samples from these units were identified using laser Raman spectroscopy and electron microprobe analysis. Coesite and coesite-bearing ultrahigh-pressure （UHP） mineral assemblages occur in zircon separates from vadous amphibolite-facies metamorphic rocks in Units Ⅰand Ⅱ. Whereas aragonite- and phengite-bearing high-pressure （HP） mineral assemblages are preserved in zircons from many amphibolite- to greenschist-facies metamorphic rocks in Units Ⅲand Ⅳ. These together with previous studies yield P-T estimates of peak metamorphic recrystallization at 723℃- 852℃, and P＞2.8 gPa for UHP rocks, and 500℃- 600℃, and P = 1.2 - 2.5 gPa for HP rocks. The spatial distribution of these P-T estimates and recent surface mapping result constrain an exact boundary between UHP and HP belts in the southern Sulu terrane along a ductile shear zones in the Donghai region.

Zircon SHRIMP dating from Qaidamshan granite shows that the granite age is 446 Ma, similar to that of eclogite in the UHP belt. We think that both granite and eclogite may be formed at different stages during tectonic evolution of this area. Together with other studies we suggested that the collision of ocean and continent plates may occur at the early Caledonian in this area, forming the eclogite, and the collision of continent and continent plates at the late Caledonian, forming the Qaidanishan granite with the zircon SHRIMP age of 446 Ma.

The Qinling-Dabie accretionary fold belt in east-central China represents the E-W trending suture zone between the Sino-Korean and Yangtze cratons. A portion of the accretionary complex exposed in northern Hubei Province contains a high-pressure / low-temperature metamorphic sequence progressively metamorphosed from the blueschist through greenschist to epidote-amphibolite / eclogite facies. The Hongan metamorphic belt can be divided into three metamorphic zones,based on progressive changes in mineral assemblages: Zone Ⅰ,in the south,is characterized by transitional blueschist-greenschist facies; ZoneⅡis characterized by greenschist facies; ZoneⅢ,in the northern most portion of the belt,is characterized by eclogite and epidote-amphibolite facies sequences. Changes in amphibole compositions from south to north as well as the appearance of increasingly higher pressure mineral assemblages toward the north document differences in metamorphic P-T conditions during formation of this belt. Preliminary P-T estimates for Zone I metamorphism are 5 ~ 7 kbar,350 ~ 450℃; estimates for Zone III eclogites are 10 ~ 22 kbar,500 ±50℃. The petrographic,chemical and structural characteristics of this metamorphic belt indicate its evolutionin a northward-dipping subduction zone and subsequent uplift prior to and during the final collisionbetween the Sino-Korean and Yangtze cratons.

The Kokchetav Massif of northern Kazakhstan is a typelocality of occurrence of microdiamonds in ultrahighpressure metamorphic" rocks. It records continental subduction and exhumation from depths greater than 120 km and provides unparalleled insights into mantle dynamics, global material recycling and the processes responsible for the genesis and destruction of continent. Through the support of a US Civilian Development and Research Fund, a group of Russian, US, Taiwan Residents and Kazakhstan geologists visited the reconstructed 800-m underground gallery to conduct field survey and sample collections. This gallery provides a useful geologic laboratory for international community to undertake similar geotectonic or different ecological and environmental studies.

In the Triassic suture between the Sino-Korean and Yangtze cratons,the Qinling-Dabie metamorphic complex includes three tectonic units: a northern migmatitic terrane（ P g eclogite belt（20;40 kb）,and a southern HP blueschist-eclogite belt（5;12 kb）. Protoliths include continental basement of late Archean to Proterozoic granitic gneiss complexes,and mid-to late Proterozoic bimodal volcanics,platform carbonates,and turbidite sequences including peraluminous sediments. Some early Paleozoic rocks are included as protoliths in the HP belt. The metamorphic complex is segmented into several large blocks by NE-SW trending faults. Three（ Dabie,Hongan and Wudan） occur in central China,and an eastern extension,the Su-Lu block is displaced to the north by the Tanlu fault. The UHP rocks are best exposed in the Dabie and Su-Lu blocks,whereas HP blueschists occur throughout the Hongan and Wudan blocks. Widespread occurrence of conjugate faults in the metamorphic complex suggests differential doming after tectonic juxtaposition of the UHP and HP units at shallow crustal levels. Eclogites of the UHP belt occur as blocks in ultramafic rocks,marble and gneiss and as thin layers interbedded with gneiss; some contain coesite and coesite pseudomorphs in garnet,omphacite,kyanite and epidote. Microdiamond inclusions in garnet have been reported. C-type glaucophane-bearing eclogites are restricted to the Hongan HP belt and contain paragonite instead of kyanite. The coherent HP terrane displays progressive zonation from transitional blueschist / greenschist,through greenschist and epidote amphibolite to eclogite assemblages. The UHP and HP belts possess similar metamorphic trends,deformation features and record clockwise P-T paths. Disposition of the UHP belt to the north of the HP belt,the northward increase in metamorphic grade,and the southward vergence of structures suggest formation during northward underflow of a microcontinent beneath the
