GREEN BUILDING STRATEGIES FOR LEED cERTIFIED REcREATIONAL FAcILITIES

Student recreational facilities at higher education institutions are increasingly utilizing green building strategies to decrease their impact on the campus environment and to increase economic and social impacts on the *** nearly two decades of LEED building development,comparative studies of LEED strategies among buildings are not rare,but still in demand due to the lessons learned from other LEED certified *** paper presents case studies on the green building strategies utilized for six student recreational facilities certified by the *** Building council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system and examines favorable strategies that lead to the success of obtaining higher rating *** comparative analysis results showed that the energy and atmosphere and indoor environmental quality categories that utilized energy performance optimization and innovative architectural designs for better daylights and views were major components for higher rating levels apart from conventional design criteria such as location,climate,and *** recreational facilities having higher ratings were more favorable in obtaining credits using central plants,stormwater design,innovative wastewater technologies,and light *** findings not only provide specific green buildings strategies for student recreational facilities,but they also enhance the green initiatives for future education facilities on university campuses.

The role of phase impurities and lattice defects on the electron dynamics and photochemistry of cuFeO2 solar photocathodes

cuFeO2 is a promising photocathode for H2 evolution and cO2 reduction *** better understand the complex defect chemistry and role of impurity phases in this material and their effect on the photochemical performance,we employ visible light transient absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory(DFT)calculations to investigate the electron dynamics in electrochemically deposited cu-Fe oxide thin *** analysis of carrier lifetime shows a fast,sub-ps contribution to relaxation followed by persistence of a Iong-lived state to time delays greater than 2 *** amplitude of the Iong-lived state is shown to correlate with the rate of fast initial relaxation,and this is explained in terms of a competition between charge carrier trapping and charge *** separation in cuFeO2 occurs via hole thermalizati on from O 2p to cu 3d vale nee band states leadi ng to segregatio n of electr ons and holes across layers in the cuFeO2 *** between transient absorption measurements and DFT calculations suggest that cu vacancies enhanee photochemical performance by facilitating charge separation *** contrast,O interstitials are predicted to switch the relative positions of O 2p and cu 3d vale nee band states,which would in hibit charge separatio n by in ter-band hole thermal izatio *** ally,we find no evide nee for electron in jecti on from cuFeO2 to cuO suggest!ng that charge separati on at this heterostructure in terface does not play a role in the carrier lifetime or photochemical performance of the catalysts studied here.

The universality of the weak interactions can be tested in semileptonic b→c transitions,and in particular in the ratios R（D＊） ≡ Γ（B → D（＊）τν）/Γ（B → D＊lν）（where 1 = μ or e）.Due to the recent differences between the experimental measurements of these observables by Ba Bar,Belle and LHcb on the one hand and the Standard Model predicted values on the other hand,we study the predicted ratios R（D＊）=Γ（B→D＊τ＋＂missing＂）/Γ（B→D（＊）lν）in scenarios with an additional sterile heavy neutrino of mass ～1 Ge ***,we evaluate the newly defined ratio R（0）≡Γ（B→τ＋＂missing＂）/Γ（B→μν） in such scenarios,in view of the future possibilities of measuring the quantity at Belle-Ⅱ.

Search for heavy sterile neutrinos in trileptons at the LHc

We present a search strategy for both Dirac and Majorana sterile neutrinos from the purely leptonic decays of W^±→e^±e^±μ ν and μ^±^±e ν at the 14 TeV LHc. The discovery and exclusion limits for sterile neutrinos are shown using both the cut-and-count（cc） and Multi-Variate Analysis（MVA） methods. We also discriminate between Dirac and Majorana sterile neutrinos by exploiting a set of kinematic observables which differ between the Dirac and Majorana cases. We find that the MVA method, compared to the more common cc method, can greatly enhance the discovery and discrimination limits. Two benchmark points with sterile neutrino mass m N =20 GeV and 50 GeV are tested. For an integrated luminosity of 3000 fb^-1, sterile neutrinos can be found with 5σ significance if heavy-to-light neutrino mixings ｜U_（Ne）｜^2~｜U_（Nμ）｜^2~10^-6, while Majorana vs. Dirac discrimination can be reached if at least one of the mixings is of order 10^-5.

Evaluating the effects of granular and membrane filtrations on chlorine demand in drinking water

In this study, chlorine decay experiments were conducted for the raw water from Nakdong River that is treated by chllseo Water Treatment Plant （cWTP） situated in Haman, Korea as well as the effluents from sand and granular activated carbon （GAc） filters of cWTP and fitted using a chlorine decay model. The model estimated the fast and slow reacting nitrogenous as well as organic/inorganic compounds that were present in the water. It was found that the chlorine demand due to fast and slow reacting （FRA and SRA） organic/inorganic substances was not reduced significantly by sand as well as GAc filters. However, the treated effluents from those filters contained FRA and SRA that are less reactive and had small reaction rate constants. For the effluents from microfiltration, ultrafiltration, and nanofiltration the chlorine demand because FRA and SRA were further reduced but the reaction rate constants were larger compared to those of sand and GAc filter effluents. This has implications in the formation of disinfection by products （DBPs）. If DBPs are assumed to form due to the interactions between chlorine and SRA, then it is possible that the DBP formation potential in the effluents from membrane filtrations could be higher than that in the effluents from granular media filters.

Nitrogen mass balance in a constructed wetland treating piggery wastewater effluent

The nitrogen changes and the nitrogen mass balance in a free water surface flow constructed wetland （cW） using the four-year monitoring data from 2008 to 2012 were estimated. The cW was composed of six cells in series that include the first settling basin （cell 1）, aeration pond （cell 2）, deep marsh （cell 3）, shallow marsh （cell 4）, deep marsh （cell 5） and final settling basin （cell 6）. Analysis revealed that the NH4＋-N concentration decreased because of ammonification which was then followed by nitrification. The NO4＋-N and NO4＋-N were also further reduced by means of microbial activities and plant uptake during photosynthesis. The average nitrogen concentration at the influent was 37,819 kg/year and approximately 45% of that amount exited the cW in the effluent. The denitrification amounted to 34% of the net nitrogen input, whereas the accretion of sediment was only 7%. The biomass uptake of plants was able to retain only 1% of total nitrogen load. In order to improve the nutrient removal by plant uptake, plant coverage in four cells （i.e., cells 1, 3, 4 and 5） could be increased.

Numerical Simulation of Duct Flow with Fog Droplets

Evaporative cooling is a widely used air cooling technique. In this method, evaporation of a liquid in the surrounding air cools the air in contact with it. In the current investigation, numerical simulations are carded out to visualize the evaporation and dynamics of tiny water droplets of different diameters in a long air duct. The effect of initial droplet size on the temperature and relative humidity distribution of the air stream in the duct is investigated. Three different initial conditions of air are considered to verify the influence of ambient conditions. Droplet spray patterns are also analyzed to identify the suitable locations for the spray nozzles within the duct. The resuits obtained are displayed in a series of plots to provide a clear understanding of the evaporative cooling process as well as the droplet dynamics within the ducts.

Dynamic Mechanical Relaxation in Bulk Metallic Glasses:A Review

Metallic glasses have aroused considerable interest in the past decades because they exhibit fascinating properties. First, this article briefly outlines the mechanical, thermal properties and application of the metallic glasses. In addition, we focus on the dynamic mechanical relaxation behaviors, i.e. main （α） and secondary （β） relaxations, in metallic glasses. The mechanical relaxation behaviors are connected to the mechanical properties and physical properties in glassy materials. The main relaxation in glassy materials is related to the glass transition phenomenon and viscous flow. On the other hand, the β relaxation is linked to many fundamental issues in metallic glasses. In these materials relaxation processes are directly related to the plastic deformation mechanism. The mechanical relaxations, particularly, the β relaxation provides an excellent opportunity to design metallic glasses with desired physical and mechanical properties. We demonstrate the universal characteristics of main relaxation in metallic glasses. The phenomenological models and the physical theories are introduced to describe the main relaxation in metallic glasses. In parallel, we show the dependence of the α. and β relaxations on the thermal treatments in metallic glasses. Finally, we analyze the correlation between the atomic mobility and the thermo-mechanical treatments in metallic glasses. On the one hand, the atomic mobility in metallic glasses is reduced by physical aging or crystallization. On the other hand, the atomic mobility in metallic glass is enhanced by deformation （i.e. compression and cold rolling）. Importantly, to analyze the atomic mobility in amorphous materials, a physical theory is introduced. This model invokes the concept of quasi-point defects, which correspond to the density fluctuations in the glassy materials.
