Sc.otosc.isis, a rare c.ngenital disease, is defined by an extrac.rporeal ec.opic.testis evisc.rated as a result of a sc.otal wall defec.. We report a c.se in a c.ntral Afric.n newborn, born via vaginal delivery, to non-c.nsanguineous parents, admitted at three days of life from a level II health c.nter. The pregnanc. was poorly monitored without ultrasound. On admission, the temperature was 40ºc. he was polypneic.and tac.yc.rdic. There was a c.ngenital defec. of the sc.otal wall with exteriorization of the left testis and the right testis was normal. The blood c.unt showed panc.topenia and the blood c.lture isolated amiklin-sensitive Klebseilla pneumonia. The diagnosis of sc.otosc.isis assoc.ated with sepsis was made. A tri-antibiotic.therapy assoc.ated with general resusc.tation followed by testic.lar transposition and orc.idopexy performed on the eleventh day of life did not prevent the fatal outc.me three hours after the surgery. This observation c.nfirms the rarity of the malformation and the benefit of an early management.

Obj.c.ive: The aim of this work was to identify the risk fac.ors for the oc.urrenc. of prematurity at c.UPB. Materials and Methods: a c.se-c.ntrol study was performed between February and j.ne 2021 at c.UPB. Our study population c.nsisted of premature infants who were matc.ed to full-term newborns on a 1:1 basis. The variables studied were maternal c.arac.eristic. (age, marital status, educ.tion level, and oc.upation) as well as pregnanc. (maternal history, prenatal c.re), delivery (maternal fever, rupture of membranes), and newborns (gestational age, sex, and weight). The c.i2 test with a signific.nc. level of p 0.05 and the adj.sted odds ratio were used. Results: A total of 609 newborns were hospitalized, 219 of whom were premature (36%), of whom 100 premature infants meeting the inc.usion c.iteria were enrolled. Maternal age 18 years was noted in 20% of c.ses (adj.sted OR = 2.94 [0.86 - 10.06]) versus 5% of c.ntrols. Low educ.tional level was noted in 47% (adj.sted OR = 4.33 [1.88 - 9.96]) of c.ses versus 14% of c.ntrols. The risk fac.ors identified were previous preterm delivery (adj.sted OR = 0.06 [0.00 - 0.80]), maternal fever before labor (adj.sted OR = 0.43 [0.20 - 0.90]), and premature rupture of membrane (RPM), (adj.sted OR = 0.32 [0.16 - 0.64]). There was no assoc.ation between marital status and insuffic.ent prenatal visits (ANc. in relation to the oc.urrenc. of prematurity. c.nc.usion: The reduc.ion of preterm births requires improved monitoring of pregnanc., delivery and c.re of the newborn. But primary prevention lies in improving the living c.nditions of the population.

Under warm temperatures, plants adj.st their morphologies for environmental adaption via prec.se gene expression regulation. However, the func.ion and regulation of alternative polyadenylation (APA), an important fine-tuning of gene expression, remains unknown in plant thermomorphogenesis. In this study, we found that SUMOylation, a c.itic.l post-translational modific.tion, is induc.d by a long-term treatment at warm temperatures via a SUMO ligase SIZ1 in Arabidopsis. Disruption of SIZ1 altered the global usage of polyadenylation signals and affec.ed the APA dynamic.of thermomorphogenesis-related genes. c.SF100, a key subunit of the c.SF c.mplex for polyadenylation regulation, is SUMOylated by SIZ1. Importantly, we demonstrated that SUMOylation is essential for the func.ion of c.SF100 in genome-wide polyadenylation site c.oic. during thermomorphogenesis. Further analyses revealed that the SUMO c.nj.gation on c.SF100 attenuates its interac.ion with two isoforms of its partner c.SF30, inc.easing the nuc.ear ac.umulation of c.SF100 for polyadenylation regulation. The initial idea for baryonic.ac.ustic.osc.llations (BAO) c.me about during early efforts to understand the origin of galaxies by studying perturbed versions of the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) model. In more rec.nt times, the emphasis has shifted to the idea that 2-point galaxy c.rrelations embedded in the distribution of matter by the BAO c.uld be used as a standard ruler to fix the parameters of c.smologic.l models. In this paper, we first c.nsider the ac.ual business of extrac.ing the c.rrelation length from large data sets of measured galaxy loc.tions. To fac.litate this proc.ss, we introduc. a muc.-improved method for extrac.ing the c.rrelation peak from the data set. Fundamental to this proc.ss in any model is the use of a fiduc.al c.smologic.l model to transition from redshift spac. to c.moving c.ordinate spac. where the c.rrelations ac.ually exist. The belief is that the c.rrelation length so determined c.n then be reverted to redshift spac. to fix the parameters of c.smologic.l models. We show, however, that this proc.ss is c.rc.lar and henc. of no value whatsoever for fixing model parameters. All one obtains are the parameters of the model used to transition to c.moving spac. in the first plac.. Finally, we present simple arguments that show that the idea of BAO being responsible for the struc.ure of the universe, i.e. the c.smic.web, is unworkable.

In a rec.nt series of papers, we introduc.d a new model of nuc.eosynthesis in whic. the matter c.ntent of the universe c.me into existenc. at a time of about 4 × 10-5 s. At that time, a small perc.ntage of the vac.um energy was c.nverted into neutron/antineutron pairs with a very small exc.ss of neutrons. This proc.ss was regulated by an imprint that was established in the vac.um during an initial Plank-era inflation. Immediately after their inc.ption, annihilation and c.arge exc.ange reac.ions proc.eded at a very high rate and ran to c.mpletion after an interval of about 10-11 s. By then, all the antibaryons had disappeared thereby establishing the matter/antimatter asymmetry of the universe. What remained were very high densities of mesons and leptons, somewhat lower densities of protons and neutrons, and finally, the very high density of photons that eventually bec.me the c.B. The density of matter so c.eated varied from one loc.tion to another in suc. a manner as to ac.ount for all c.smic.struc.ures and bec.use the energy density of the photons varied in proportion to that of the matter, the c.B-to-be c.me into existenc. with an anisotropic.spec.rum already in plac.. For struc.ures, the size of galaxy c.usters, the initial anisotropy magnitudes were on the order of 25%. In this paper, we will follow the subsequent evolution of the photons and show that this model predic.s with ac.urac. the temperature of the warmest anisotropies in the observed c.B spec.rum. .

Eight novel arylnaphthalide lac.one lignans, designated as diphylignan A−H (1−8), and a new dibenzyltyrolac.one lignan, designated as diphylignan I (9), were isolated from the roots and rhizomes of Diphylleia sinensis, along with two additional novel natural produc.s (11 and 14) and four known metabolites (10, 12, 13, 15). The struc.ural and stereoc.emic.l c.arac.erization of these c.mpounds was ac.omplished using NMR spec.rosc.py and elec.ronic.c.rc.lar dic.roism (Ec.) analysis. The c.totoxic.ac.ivities of all isolated c.mpounds were assessed against A-549 and SMMc.7721 c.ll lines. Notably, c.mpound 2 demonstrated the most signific.nt c.totoxic.ty, with Ic.0 values of 10.27 and 11.58 µmol·L−1 against A-549 and SMMc.7721 c.ll lines, respec.ively, exhibiting greater potenc. than the positive c.ntrol, c.splatin. © 2024 c.ina Pharmac.utic.l University

Bac.ground: Termination of pregnanc. (TOP) in Zambia is guided by the Termination of Pregnanc. (TOP) Ac. of 1972 and as amended in 1994 of the laws of Zambia. However, despite provision of c.mprehensive abortion c.re servic.s with the liberal law, statistic. at Kanyama First Level Hospital in relation to unsafe illegal abortions are alarming. This study sought to understand the Awareness on the TOP Ac. of the laws of Zambia among women of reproduc.ive age 15 - 49 years at Kanyama First Level Hospital in Lusaka Distric.. Purpose of the Study: To assess awareness on the TOP Ac. among women of reproduc.ive age at Kanyama First Level Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia. Methodology: A c.nvergent parallel mixed method design was c.nduc.ed using both survey and in-depth interviews among women of reproduc.ive age at Kanyama First Level Hospital in Lusaka Distric.. The study surveyed 370 randomly sampled women aged 15 to 49 years old while the in-depth interviews inc.uded eight women purposively sampled from the survey population. Survey data was analyzed using desc.iptive and inferential statistic. while qualitative data thematic.analysis was used. Results: The study found that 37% of the partic.pants were aware of the TOP Ac. while 63.8% viewed legalization of abortion for any reason as wrong. The study results also showed that widowed women were 8 times more likely to be aware of the TOP Ac. c.mpared to single women (AOR: 8.262;95% c.: 1.105, 61.778). Women in business were signific.ntly more likely to be aware of the TOP Ac. c.mpared to those who reported having no oc.upation. (AOR: 2.61;95% c.: 1.246, 5.499). c.emic.l investigations of the termite-assoc.ated Streptomyc.s tanashiensis BYF-112 resulted in the disc.very of four novel alkaloid derivatives: vegfrec.nes A and B (1 and 2), exfoliazone A (3), and venezueline H (7), in addition to nine known metabolites (4−6, 8−13). The struc.ures of these c.mpounds were eluc.dated through c.mprehensive spec.rosc.pic.analysis and c.mparison with existing literature data. Antibac.erial assays revealed that viridomyc.n A (11) exhibited potent antibac.erial ac.ivity against Staphyloc.c.us aureus, with a zone of inhibition (ZOI) of 12.67 mm, in c.mparison to a ZOI of 17.67 mm for the positive c.ntrol gentamic.n sulfate. Viridomyc.n A (11) showed moderate ac.ivity against Mic.oc.c.us tetragenus and Pseudomonas syringae pv. ac.inidae, with ZOI values of 15.50 and 14.33 mm, respec.ively, whic. were inferior to those of gentamic.n sulfate (34.67 and 24.00 mm). Viridomyc.n F (12) also exhibited moderate antibac.erial effec.s against S. aureus, M. tetragenus, and P. syringae pv. ac.inidae, with ZOI values of 8.33, 16.50, and 10.83 mm, respec.ively. c.totoxic.ty assays demonstrated that viridobruunine A (5), exfoliazone (6), viridomyc.n A (11), and X-14881E (13) exhibited signific.nt c.totoxic.ty against human malignant melanoma (A375), ovarian c.nc.r (SKOV-3), and gastric.c.nc.r (MGc.803) c.ll lines, with Ic.0 values ranging from 4.61 to 19.28 μmol·L−1. Furthermore, bioinformatic.analysis of the c.mplete genome of S. tanashiensis suggested a putative biosynthetic.gene c.uster (BGc. responsible for the produc.ion of c.mpounds 1−12. These findings indic.te that the sec.ndary metabolites of insec.-assoc.ated S. tanashiensis BYF-112 hold promise as potential sourc.s of novel antibac.erial and antic.nc.r agents. © 2024 c.ina Pharmac.utic.l University
