Acoustic Measurements for Determination of the Materials Damping Using A Sound Source Localisation System

Noise measurements are especially a problem when the obj.ct under investigation is largely dimensioned and can only be measured from the distance. To obtain information about the location of noise generation, a measurement technique which makes sound visible in order to introduce further specific technical measures is advantageous. The question is if the time dependence of the signal got from such a non touching and non destructive acoustic method has the potential to calculate the materials damping from. Using a small sound source localization system （Microflown^TM probe）, specimens of magnesium alloys with different grain sizes obtained by hydrostatic extrusion were investigated. It has been demonstrated that the fine grained microstructure led to a lower damping and its dependence on the strain was reduced. In this context, acoustic measurements by a sound source localisation system which makes materials characterization possible could be used as a quality tool to detect changes in highly stressed components. This approach allows to promote a selective substitution of conventional materials by more innovative ones. The offshore sector is considered to be a field of application： Wind turbines produce noise emission which stems mainly from turbulences at the tips of the rotor blades and vibrations of components inside the nacelle （e.9. gearbox, generator, ...）. If the vibration amplitudes are too high, microcracks of components can lead to failure over the long term. The monitoring of microstructural changes using a larger type of a sound source localisation system is considered as an innovative technical approach with respect to maintenance activities.

The effect of isochronal heat treatments for 1h on variation of damping, hardness and microstructural change of the magnesium wrought alloy AZ61 was investigated. Damping and hardness behaviour could be attributed to the evolution of precipitation process. The influence of precipitation on damping behaviour was explained in the framework of the dislocation string model of granato and Lücke.

Identifying suitable areas for plenter forest management

Plenter forests, also known as uneven-aged or continuous cover forests enhance forest resilience and resistance against disturbances compared to even-aged forests. They are considered as an adaptation option to mitigate climate change effects. In this study, we present a conceptual approach to determine the potentially suitable area for plenter forest management within central European mixed species forests and apply our approach to the case study area in Styria, the south-eastern Province of Austria. The concept is based on ecological and technical-economic constraints and considers expected future climate conditions and its impact on plenter forest management. For each 1 ha forest pixel, we assess the ecological conditions for plenter forest management according to the autecological growth conditions of silver fir, and at least one additional shade tolerant tree species. The technical-economic constraints are defined by slope (g. The results show that under current climate conditions 28.1% or 305,349 ha of the forests in Styria are potentially suitable for plenter forest management. For the years 2071-2100 and under the climate change scenario RCP 4.5, the potential area decreases to 286,098 ha (26.3% of the total forest area) and for the scenario RCP 8.5 to 208,421 ha (19.1% of the total forest area). The main reason for these changes is the unfavourable growing conditions for silver fir in the lowlands, while in the higher elevations silver fir is likely to expand. Our results may serve forest managers to identify areas suitable for plenter forests and assist in the transformation of even-aged pure forests to uneven-aged forests to increase resistance, resilience, and biodiversity under climate change.

The Influence of Visible Light on the Consumption Rate of Expanded Polystyrene by Zophobas morio Larvae

The process of disposing of expanded polystyrene (EPS) is by burning it in municipal incinerators. This process gives off EPS microplastics, which can find their way into water, food, blood, and maj.r organ systems. Zophobas morio larvae are capable of consuming and breaking down EPS within their digestive tracts by minimizing the spread of microplastics. Studies of the consumption of EPS by Z. morio larvae are typically conducted under white or no visible light treatments. This study tested whether the color of visible light influenced the consumption rate of EPS by Z. morio larvae. If Z. morio larvae consume EPS under visible light, then visible light will influence the amount of EPS consumed. If results suggest that the consumption rate is influenced by visible light colors, then Z. morio larvae could be a solution for recycling EPS. This study’s procedure placed Z. morio larvae into 25 j.rs under one of six visible light treatments of red, yellow, green, blue, white, and no visible light. Each j.r contained a pre-weighed block of EPS and six Z. morio larvae. After two weeks, the Z. morio larvae were removed from the j.rs, and the difference between each pre-weighed EPS block and the weight of the same partially consumed block was recorded in three trials. The data indicates that green and blue visible light treatments resulted in the greatest amount of EPS consumed by Z. morio larvae while the red and yellow had the least amount of EPS consumed by the Z. morio larvae. In conclusion, results indicate that green and blue visible light, compared to the no visible light treatment, could be used to influence the Z. morio larvae to consume more EPS. green and blue visible light and Z. morio larvae could make the recycling process of EPS more environmentally friendly when used in households or by local environmental organizations.

Thoughts Concerning the Origin of Our Fractal Universe

During the past few decades, it has become clear that the distribution, sizes, and masses of cosmic structures are best described as fractal rather than homogeneous. This means that an entirely different formalism is needed to replace the standard perturbation model of structure formation. Recently, we have been developing a model of cosmology that accounts for a large number of the observed properties of the universe. A key component of this model is that fractal structures that later regulated the creation of both matter and radiation came into existence during the initial Planck-era inflation. Initially, the vacuum was the only existence and since time, distance, and energy were uncertain, its only property, the curvature (or energy), was most likely distributed randomly. Everything that happened after the Planck era can be described by the known laws of physics so the remaining fundamental problem is to discover how such a random beginning could organize itself into the hierarchy of highly non-random self-similar structures on all length scales that are necessary to explain the existence of all cosmic structures. In this paper, we present a variation of the standard sandpile model that points to a solution. Incidental to our review of the distributions of cosmic structures, we discovered that the apparent transition from a fractal to a homogeneous distribution of structures at a distance of about 150 Mpc is a consequence of the finite size of the universe rather than a change in the underlying statistics of the distributions.

Analysis of convective-radiative heat transfer in dovetail longitudinal fins with shape-dependent hybrid nanofluids: a study using the Hermite wavelet method

A distinguished category of operational fluids, known as hybrid nanofluids,occupies a prominent role among various fluid types owing to its superior heat transfer properties. By employing a dovetail fin profile, this work investigates the thermal reaction of a dynamic fin system to a hybrid nanofluid with shape-based properties, flowing uniformly at a velocity U. The analysis focuses on four distinct types of nanoparticles,i.e., Al2O3, Ag, carbon nanotube (CNT), and graphene. Specifically, two of these particles exhibit a spherical shape, one possesses a cylindrical form, and the final type adopts a platelet morphology. The investigation delves into the pairing of these *** examination employs a combined approach to assess the constructional and thermal exchange characteristics of the hybrid nanofluid. The fin design, under the specified circumstances, gives rise to the derivation of a differential equation. The given equation is then transformed into a dimensionless form. Notably, the Hermite wavelet method is introduced for the first time to address the challenge posed by a moving fin submerged in a hybrid nanofluid with shape-dependent features. To validate the credibility of this research, the results obtained in this study are systematically compared with the numerical simulations. The examination discloses that the highest heat flux is achieved when combining nanoparticles with spherical and platelet shapes.

Telomeres: The Promise of New Cancer Therapies

Telomeres have been a subj.ct of genetic research since the 1930s. They play a crucial role in cancer biology, as they influence both cellular senescence and genomic stability. In cancer cells, dysfunctional telomeres can lead to chromosomal fusions and, through deregulation of telomerase, allow replication of mutated chromosomes that might otherwise lead to apoptosis. Research is now focused on improving telomere-based cancer cell detection and developing potential therapies that inhibit telomerase activity in cancerous cells. Telomere research is crucial in understanding the molecular mechanisms influencing tumor growth and invasiveness because of the central role played by telomeres in various cancer types. Several telomerase inhibitors and immunotherapy treatments are in pre-clinical or clinical development. Research on the role of telomeres in oncogenesis has made significant strides, but obstacles remain, including a lack of high-resolution structural understanding, inadequate preclinical models, and concern over potential side effects. Even so, the current path of telomere research holds promise.
