Higgs boson searches at the Tevatron

This article reviews the Higgs searches at the Tevatron, as presented over the summer of 2012; both standard model （SM） and beyond the standard model （bSM） results are discussed as detailed （arXiv： 1207.0449; Phys. Rev. Lett., 2012, 109： 071804; Phys. Rev. D, 2012, 85： 032005）. We discuss the combination of searches by the CDF and DO Collaborations for the standard model Higgs boson in the mass range 100-200 GeV/c2 produced in the the gg →H, WH, ZH, tfH, and vector boson fusion production modes, and decaying in the H → bb, H → W＋W-, H → ZZ, H →π＋π-, and H →γγ modes. The data, collected at the Fermilab Tevatron collider in p/5 collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV, correspond to integrated luminosities of up to 10 fb^-1. In the absence of signal, we expect to exclude the regions 100 〈 mH 〈 120 GeV/c2 and 139 〈 mH 〈 184 GeV/c2. We exclude, at the 95% C.L., two regions： 100 〈 mH 〈 103 GeV/c2, and 147 〈 mH 〈 180 GeV/c2. We observe a significant excess of events in the mass range between 115 and 140 GeV/c2. The local significance corresponds to 3.0 standard deviations at mH = 120 GeV/ce; the global significance （incorporating the lookelsewhere effect） for such an excess anywhere in the full mass range investigated is approximately 2.5 standard deviations. Furthermore, we separately combine searches for H→ bb-, H → W＋W- and H →γγ. We find that the excess is concentrated in the H →bb channel, appearing in the searches over a broad range of raN; the maximum local significance of 3.3 standard deviations corresponds to a global significance of approximately 3.1 standard deviations. The observed signal strengths in all channels are consistent with the expectation for a standard model Higgs boson at mH = 125 GeV/c2. The production of neutral Higgs bosons in association with b-quarks can be significantly enhanced in various beyond the standard model scenarios, including Supersymmetry. The recent combination of such searches from the two collaborations is discussed.

Mitogen-activated protein kinases mediate the oxidative burst and saponin synthesis induced by chitosan in cell cultures of Panax ginseng

Chitosan (CHN) specially induced the activities of 39 kD and 42 kD protein kinases in ginseng cells, which could be suppressed by an inhibitor of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway, PD98059. The immunoprecipitation (IP) using MAPK antibody or kinase assay in vitro also showed that CHN-induced 42 kD and 39 kD protein kinases belonged to the MAPK family. PD98059 suppressed CHN-induced transcriptions of ginseng squalene synthase and ginseng squalene epoxidase genes (gss and gse), CHN-induced accumulation of β-Amyrin synthase (β-AS) and synthesis of saponin. These results showed that CHN-induced activities of MAPKs were necessary for the CHN-induced saponin synthesis. EGTA and LaCl3 suppressed CHN-induced 39 kD and 42 kD MAPK activities. Ruthenium red (RR) could suppress CHN-induced 39 kD activity. All of them suppressed CHN-induced saponin synthesis. These results indicated that CHN-induced increment of cytosolic calcium was necessary for CHN-induced saponin synthesis. PD98059 also suppressed CHN-induced oxidative burst (including the increment of activity of plasma membrane NADPH oxidase and production of H2O2), but diphenylene iodonium (DPI), dimethylthiourea (DMTU) and 2,5-dihydroxycinnamic acid methyl ester (DHC) could not suppress CHN-induced MAPK activities, which indicated that MAPK was possibly function upstream of CHN-induced oxidative burst. Toll-like receptors （TLRs） recognize distinct microbial components to initiate the innate and adaptive immune responses. TLR activation culminates in the expression of appropriate pro-inflammatory and immunomodulatory factors to meet pathogenic challenges. The transcription factor NF-kb is the master regulator of all TLR-induced responses and its activation is the pivotal event in TLR-mediated activation of the innate immune response. Many of the key molecular events required for TLR-induced NF-r.b activation have been elucidated. However, much remain to be learned about the ability of TLRs to generate pathogen-specific responses using a limited number of transcription factors. This review will focus on our current understanding of NF-kb activation by TLRs and potential mechanisms for achieving a signal-specific response through NF-kb. Similarity measure is an essential tool to compare and determine the degree of similarity between intuitionistic fuzzy sets (IFSs). In this paper, a new similarity measure between intuitionistic fuzzy sets based on the mid points of transformed triangular fuzzy numbers is proposed. The proposed similarity measure provides reasonable results not only for the sets available in the literature but also gives very reasonable results, especially for fuzzy sets as well as for most intuitionistic fuzzy sets. To provide supportive evidence, the proposed similarity measure is tested on certain sets available in literature and is also applied to pattern recognition and medical diagnosis problems. It is observed that the proposed similarity measure provides a very intuitive quantification.

Tracking moving magnetic features in the photosphere

This research aims for an obj.ctive identification, tracking, and a statistical analysis of the Moving Magnetic Features (MMFs) around sunspots using SOHO/MDI high-resolution magnetograms. To this end, we develop a computerized tracking program and study the motion and magnetism of the outflows of MMFs around 26 sunspots. Our method locates 4-27 MMFs per hour, with higher counts for large sunspots. We differentiate MMFs into type α that have a polarity opposite to the parent sunspots, and type β that share the sunspot's polarity. These sunspots' MMF subsets exhibit a wide range of central tendencies which have distinctive correlations with the sunspots. In general, α-MMFs emerge farther from the sunspot, carry less flux, and move faster than β-MMFs. The typical α/β-MMFs emerge at 2.2 - 8.1/0.1 - 3.2 Mm outside the penumbra limb, with lifetimes of 1.1 - 3.1/1.3 - 2.0 h. They are 1.1 - 6.6/1.4 - 3.6 Mm2 in area and carry 1.4 - 12.5/4.8 - 11.4 ×1018 Mx of flux. They travel a distance of 2.7 - 5.9/2.8 - 3.6 Mm with the speed of 0.5 - 0.9/0.4 - 0.7 km/s. Compared to the α-MMFs produced by large sunspots, those of small spots are smaller. They emerge closer to sunspot, move farther, live longer, and carry less flux. β-MMFs show much less correlation with the sunspots. The flux outflow carried by the MMFs ranges from 0.2 to 8.3 × 1019Mx· h-1 and does not show obvious correlation with the sunspots' evolution. The frequency distributions of the MMFs' distance traveled, area, and flux are exponential. This suggests the existence of numerous small, weak, and short-timescale magnetic obj.cts which might contribute to the sunspot flux outflow.

Scalar resonant frequencies and Hawking effect of an f(R) global monopole

Massive scalar fields are considered in with a global monopole in f（R） gravity. The exact background is obtained and is given in terms of the Heun functions to study the Hawking radiation and the gravitational field produced by a Schwarzschild black hole solution of the radial part of the Klein-Gordon equation in this general Heun functions. We apply the properties of the general the resonant frequencies of scalar particles.

This short review deals with soils as an important source of the greenhouse gas N2O. The production and consumption of N2O in soils mainly involve biotic processes: the anaerobic process of denitrification and the aerobic process of nitrification. The factors that significantly influence agricultural N2O emissions mainly concern the agricultural practices (N application rate, crop type, fertilizer type) and soil conditions (soil moisture, soil organic C content, soil pH and texture). Large variability of N2O fluxes is known to occur both at different spatial and temporal scales. Currently new techniques could help to improve the capture of the spatial variability. Continuous measurement systems with automatic chambers could also help to capture temporal variability and consequently to improve quantification of N2O emissions by soils. Some attempts for mitigating soil N2O emissions, either by modifying agricultural practices or by managing soil microbial functioning taking into account the origin of the soil N2O emission variability, are reviewed.

Experimental and Numerical Investigation on Impact Performance of Carbon Reinforced Aluminum Laminates

It is known that fiber metal laminates （FML） as one of hybrid materials with thin metal sheets and fiber/epoxy layers have the characteristics of the excellent damage tolerance, fatigue and impact properties with a relatively low density. Therefore, the mechanical components using FML can contribute the enhanced safety level of the sound construction toward the whole body. In this study, the impact performance of carbon reinforced aluminum laminates （CARAL） is investigated by experiments and numerical simulations. Drop weight tests are carried out with the weight of 4.7 kg at the speed of 1 and 2 m/s, respectively. Dynamic non-linear transient analyses are also accomplished using a finite element analysis software, AbAQUS. The experiment results and numerical results are compared with impact load-time histories. Also, energy-time histories are applied to investigate the impact performance of CARAL.

Interfacial bonding mechanism in Al/coated steel dissimilar refill friction stir spot welds

Defect-free dissimilar Al/zinc coated steel and Al/AlSi coated steel welds were successfully fabricated by refill friction stir spot welding. However, Al alloy and uncoated steel could not be welded under the same welding condition. Al-Zn eutectic layer formed at the Al/zinc coated steel interface showed nonuniformity in thickness and nanoscale intermetallic(IMC) produced was discontinuous. The bonding formation between the Al-Zn layer and the surrounding materials was attributed to a liquid/solid reaction mechanism. bonding formation at Al alloy and AlSi coated steel interface was attributed to a solid/solid reaction mechanism, as the j.ining process did not involve with melting of base metals or AlSi coating materials. Kissing bond formed at the weld boundary acted as a crack initiation and propagation site,and the present study showed that weld strength of Al 5754/AlSi coated steel was greatly influenced by properties of original IMC layer.
