AIM To investigate recruitment, retention, and estimatesfor effects of formula supplementation withLactobacillus rhamnosus GG （LGG） on inflammatorybiomarkers and fecal microbial community in infants ***： A prospective, double-blind, placebocontrolledtrial was conducted in otherwise healthyinfants with colic. We screened 74 infants and randomizedand analyzed results in 20 infants [9 receivingLGG （LGG＋） and 11 not receiving LGG （LGG-）]. LGG wasincorporated in the formula （Nutramigen？）（minimum of3 × 10^7 CFU/d） in the LGG＋ group. Fecal microbiota andinflammatory biomarkers, including fecal calprotectin（FC）, plasma cytokines, circulating regulatory T cells（Tregs）, and crying ＋ fussing time were analyzed todetermine optimal time points and effect sizes for alarger ***： Recruitment in this population was slow, withabout 66% of eligible infants willing to enroll; subjectretention was better （75%）. Characterization of the tribologically relevant cover layers formed on copper in oxygen and oxygen-free conditions

Engineering in vacuum or under a protective atmosphere permits the production of materials, wherever the absence of oxygen is an essential demand for a successful processing. However, very few studies have provided quantitative evidence of the effect of oxidized surfaces to tribological properties. In the current study on 99.99% pure copper, it is revealed that tribo-oxidation and the resulting increased abrasive wear can be suppressed by processing in an extreme high vacuum (XHV) adequate environment. The XHV adequate atmosphere was realized by using a silane-doped shielding gas (1.5 vol% SiH4 in argon). To analyse the influence of the ambient atmosphere on the tribological and mechanical properties, a ball–disk tribometer and a nanoindenter were used in air, argon, and silane-doped argon atmosphere for temperatures up to 800 ℃. Resistance measurements of the resulting coatings were carried out. To characterize the microstructures and the chemical compositions of the samples, the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used. The investigations have revealed a formation of η-Cu3Si in silane-doped atmosphere at 300 ℃, as well as various intermediate stages of copper silicides. At temperatures above 300 ℃, the formation of γ-Cu5Si were detected. The formation was linked to an increase in hardness from 1.95 to 5.44 GPa, while the Young’s modulus increased by 46% to 178 GPa, with the significant reduction of the wear volume by a factor of 4.5 and the suppression of further oxidation and susceptibility of chemical wear. In addition, the relevant diffusion processes were identified using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations.

Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt vs conservative treatment for recurrent ascites:A propensity score matched comparison

BACKGROUND Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt(TIPS) placement is an effective intervention for recurrent tense ascites. Some studies show an increased risk of acute on chronic liver failure(ACLF) associated with TIPS placement. It is not clear whether ACLF in this context is a consequence of TIPS or of the pre-existing liver *** To better understand the risks of TIPS in this challenging setting and to compare them with those of conservative *** Two hundred and fourteen patients undergoing their first TIPS placement for recurrent tense ascites at our tertiary-care center between 2007 and 2017 were identified(TIPS group). Three hundred and ninety-eight patients of the same time interval with liver cirrhosis and recurrent tense ascites not undergoing TIPS placement(No TIPS group) were analyzed as a control group. TIPS indication,diagnosis of recurrent ascites, further diagnoses and clinical findings were obtained from a database search and patient records. The in-hospital mortality and ACLF incidence of both groups were compared using 1:1 propensity score matching and multivariate logistic *** After propensity score matching, the TIPS and No TIPS groups were comparable in terms of laboratory values and ACLF incidence at hospital admission. There was no detectable difference in mortality(TIPS: 11/214, No TIPS 13/214). During the hospital stay, ACLF occurred more frequently in the TIPS group than in the No TIPS group(TIPS: 70/214, No TIPS: 57/214, P = 0.04). This effect was confined to patients with severely impaired liver function at hospital admission as indicated by a significant interaction term of Child score and TIPS placement in multivariate logistic regression. The TIPS group had a lower ACLF incidence at Child scores < 8 points and a higher ACLF incidence at ≥ 11 points. Solving the Dyson-Schwinger equation around its first singularities in the Borel plane

The Dyson-Schwinger equation of the massless Wess-Zumino model is written as an equation over the anomalous dimension of the theory. Its asymptotic behavior is derived and the procedure to compute the perturbations of this asymptotic behavior is detailed. This procedure uses ill-defined objects. To solve this, the Dyson-Schwinger equation is rewritten for the Borel plane. It is shown that the ill- defined procedure in the physical plane can be applied in the Borel plane. Other results obtained in the Borel plane are stated and the proof for one result is described.

Diatom-inspired Plastic Deformation Elements for Energy Absorption in Automobiles

We report on a biomimetic approach for the construction of a deformation element in vehicles which absorbs energy in the case of lateral collisions. We aim at simultaneously maximising the energy absorption capacity of the component and mini- mising its weight. The examined deformation element, a crash-pad is inspired by the structure of a diatom which is known for its structural stability. As the natural counterpart, our crash pad is characterized by an undulated shape. The three undulations of the crash pad are of different height and provide for a sequential absorption of the impact energy. Compression tests were performed on the prototypes of the crash pad that were produced from different materials, namely a conventional talc reinforced poly- propylene and a natural fibre reinforced plastic. Compression tests revealed that the bioinspired crash pads performed better or equal than their technical counterpart. As required, the bioinspired components deformed continuously with the increase in deformation force. Since the differences in the properties of the used materials were small, the increased energy absorption properties were predominantly due to the structure of the biomimetic deformation element.
