Expression of tissue factor in pancreatic adenocarcinoma is associated with activation of coagulation

AIM： To study expression of tissue factor （TF） in pancreatic cancer and its role in the development of thromboembolism.METHODS： TF expression was studied in eight human pancreatic carcinoma cell lines by Northern blot and indirect immunofluorescence. Expression of alternatively spliced TF （asTF） was assessed by RT-PCR. In addition, TF expression was determined by immunofluorescence in pancreatic tissues of 19 patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma （PCa）, 9 patients with chronic pancreatitis （CP） and 20 normal controls. Plasma samples （30 PCa-patients, 13 CP-patients and 20 controls） were investigated for soluble TF levels and coagulation activation markers [thrombin-antithrombin Ⅲ complex （TAT）, prothrombin fragment 1 ＋ 2 （F1 ＋ 2）]. RESULTS： All pancreatic carcinoma cell lines expressed TF （8/8） and most of them expressed asTF （6/8）. TF expression at the protein level did not correlate with the differentiation of the carcinoma cell line. All but two pancreatic cancer tissue samples stained positive for TF （17/19）. In all samples of CP weak staining was restricted to pancreatic duct cells, whereas only a few subendothelial cells were positive in 9/20 of normal controls. TF and TAT levels in PCa patients were significantly elevated compared to controls whereas elevated F1 ＋ 2 levels did not reach statistical significance compared to controls. In CP patients TAT and F1 ＋ 2 levels proved to be significantly elevated compared to controls, although TAT elevation was less pronounced than in PCa patients. CONCLUSION： We conclude that in addition to the upregulated expression of TF on the cell membrane, soluble TF might contribute to activation of the coagulation system in pancreatic cancer.

The representations of the Dynkin quivers and the corresponding Euclidean quivers are treated in many books. These notes provide three building blocks for dealing with representations of Dynkin （and Euclidean） quivers. Commercial Technologies for Advanced Light Control in Smart Building Energy Management Systems: A Comparative Study

This work investigates the economic, social, and environmental impact of adopting different smart lighting architectures for home automation in two geographical and regulatory regions: Algiers, Algeria, and Stuttgart, Germany. Lighting consumes a considerable amount of energy, and devices for smart lighting solutions are among the most purchased smart home devices. As commercialized solutions come with variant features, we empirically evaluate through this study the impact of each one of the energy-related features and provide insights on those that have higher energy saving contribution. The study started by investigating the state-of-the-art of commercialized ICT-based light control solutions, which allowed the extraction of the energy-related features. Based on the outcomes of this study, we generated simulation scenarios and selected evaluations metrics to evaluate the impact of dimming, daylight harvesting, scheduling, and motion detection. The simulation study has been conducted using EnergyPlussimulation tool, which?enables fine-grained realistic evaluation. The results show that adopting smart lighting technologies have a payback period of few years and that the use of these technologies has positive economic and societal impacts, as well as on the environment by considerably reducing gas emissions. However, this positive contribution is highly sensitive to the geographical location, energy prices, and the occupancy profile.

Multimodal Imaging to Delineate Tumor Heterogeneity in Cerebral Gliomas

Purpose: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the gold standard in visualizing brain tumors and their effects on adjacent structures. However, no reliable information concerning different tumor components and borders between perifocal edema and infiltration areas can be received. The aim of the study was to establish and evaluate a multimodal imaging concept, in order to differentiate different biological tumor components and to determine tumor borders. Materials and Methods: 12 patients with cerebral gliomas (four low and eight high grade) received a “morphological” MRI, a 3D MR spectroscopy and a T2* MR perfusion examination prior to surgery. Data was evaluated by defining different tumor components, which were entitled based upon their multimodal characteristics and histological data. Results: In high grade gliomas different components can be differentiated, which were described as: “true edema”, “cellular proliferation”, “vascular proliferation”, “cellular infiltration”, “tumor” and “necrosis”. In low grade gliomas, four different tumor components were found: “true edema”, “cellular infiltration”, “cellular proliferation” and “tumor”. Conclusion: With the applied multimodal imaging and a novel evaluation concept, it was possible to detect different tumor components, which could be helpful in detecting the optimal sites for tumor biopsy. Especially in morphological “edema appearing” sites, this knowledge could be important for the adaption of tumor resection borders and the planning of radiation therapy. Further studies with more patients and histological correlation are needed.
