Background'.Central arterial stiffness is a cardiovascular risk factor that can be readily affected through engagement in physical exercise training,with resistance and aerobic exercise having disparate affects.Despite the growing popularity of high-intensity cross-training(HICT),little is currently known about the effects of this mixed modality exercise stimulus on arterial stiffness.Therefore,the purpose of this study was to characterize the arterial stiffness of habitual HICT participants vs.aerobically active and sedentary controls using a cross-sectional design.Methods'.A total of 30 participants were recruited:10 middle-aged long-term participants of HICT(CrossFit)and 20 age,sex,and height matched controls(10 recreationally active,10 sedentary).Central and peripheral pulse wave velocities were measured for the carotid-femoral and femoral-dorsalis pedis arterial segments.Aerobic fitness(maximal oxygen uptake,VChmax)was measured and typical exercise participation rates were self-reported for each group.Results'.HICT participants manifested central pulse wave velocity(PWV)(5.3±1.0 m/s,mean±SD)and VChmax(43±6 mL/kg/min)values nearly identical to active controls.Both active groups had significantly better values than sedentary controls(7.1±1.0 m/s,p≤0.001;and 32±7 mL/kg/min,p=0.01).No differences were observed in peripheral PWV between groups.Conclusion'.Habitual participation in HICT exercise was not associated with increased central nor peripheral arterial stiffness.Long-term HICT participants presented with similar fitness and arterial stiffness as compared with participants who practiced traditional aerobic exercise.Compared to sedentary living,HICT may offer musculoskeletal and cardiovascular health benefits without negatively impacting arterial stiffness.

To limit global warming and mitigate climate change,the global economy needs to decarbonize and reduce emissions to net-zero by mid-century.The asymmetries of the global energy system necessitate the deployment of a suite of decarbonization technologies and an all-of-the-above approach to deliver the steep CO_(2)-emissions reductions necessary.Carbon capture and storage(CCS)technologies that capture CO_(2) from industrial and power-plant point sources as well as the ambient air and store them underground are largely seen as needed to address both the flow of emissions being released and the stock of CO_(2) already in the atmosphere.Despite the pressing need to commercialize the technologies,their large-scale deployment has been slow.Initial deployment,however,could lead to near-term cost reduction and technology proliferation,and lowering of the overall system cost of decarbonization.As of November 2019,more than half of global large-scale CCS facilities are in the USA,thanks to a history of sustained government support for the technologies.Recently,the USA has seen a raft of new developments on the policy and project side signaling a reinvigorated push to commercialize the technology.Analysing these recent developments using a policy-priorities framework for CCS commercialization developed by the Global CCS Institute,the paper assesses the USA’s position to lead large-scale deployment of CCS technologies to commercialization.It concludes that the USA is in a prime position due to the political economic characteristics of its energy economy,resource wealth and innovation-driven manufacturing sector.

Growth kinetics of the most stable polymorph of calcium carbonate,calcite,has been studied in seeded stirred batch experiments in MEG-water solutions at 40 ℃ and 70 ℃,conditions relevant for the processing of natural gas.It was found that MEG changes the growth order from two in pure water to one in solvent mixtures of MEG and water.Assuming parabolic growth (growth order is equal to two),it could be shown that MEG decreases the growth rate constant for calcite from 0.52 nm/s to 0.11 nm/s (70 ℃) when the MEG-content is increased from 0 wt% MEG to 65 wt% MEG.Decreasing the temperature from 70 ℃ to 40 ℃ has a similar effect on the growth rate constant as raising the level of MEG to 65 wt%.

Short bowel syndrome (SBS) refers to the malabsorption of nutrients, water, and essential vitamins as a result of disease or surgical removal of parts of the small intestine. The most common reasons for removing part of the small intestine are due to surgical intervention for the treatment of either Crohn's disease or necrotizing enterocolitis. Intestinal adaptation following resection may take weeks to months to be achieved, thus nutritional support requires a variety of therapeutic measures, which include parenterai nutrition. Improper nutrition management can leave the SBS patient malnourished and/or dehydrated, which can be life threatening. The development of therapeutic strategies that reduce both the complications and medical costs associated with SBS/long-term parenterai nutrition while enhancing the intestinal adaptive response would be valuable. Currently, therapeutic options available for the treatment of SBS are limited. There are many potential stimulators of intestinal adaptation including peptide hormones, growth factors, and neuronally-derived components. Glucagon-like peptide-2 (GLP-2) is one potential treatment for gastrointestinal disorders associated with insufficient mucosal function. A significant body of evidence demonstrates that GLP-2 is a trophic hormone that plays an important role in controlling intestinal adaptation. Recent data from clinical trials demonstrate that GLP-2 is safe, well-tolerated, and promotes intestinal growth in SBS patients. However, the mechanism of action and the localization of the glucagon-like peptide-2 receptor (GLP-2R) remains an enigma. This review summarizes the role of a number of mucosal-derived factors that might be involved with intestinal adaptation processes; however, this discussion primarily examines the physiology, mechanism of action, and utility of GLP-2 in the regulation of intestinal mucosal growth.

The present focus of the CBELSA/TAPS experiment is on meson-photoproduction off the nucleon using polarized photons and polarized targets. Here first preliminary results on the reactions γp → pπ and γp → pπ for both circularly and linearly polarized photons and a longitudinally polarized target are presented. Preliminary results for the beam asymmetry ∑ and the double polarization observable G have been extracted for both reactions using the linear polarization data. From the circular polarization data the observable E has been determined. Due to the near 4π angular coverage of the detector system these results cover almost the full solid angle.

Bartter syndrome is a group of autosomal recessive renal tubular disorders;it has two types of presentation:antenatal and classic.The antenatal type presents as severe unexplained polyhydramnios in the second trimester.This is due to fetal urinary losses of sodium,chloride,and potassium,leading to fetal polyuria.The classic type presents in the late neonatal or infancy stage,with dehydration,dyselectrolytemia,failure to thrive,and nephrocalcinosis.Antenatal scans are normal in such cases.Type I and II Bartter syndrome presents in the antenatal period,whereas type IV has a classic presentation.We describe an unusual case of type IVa Bartter syndrome presenting in the antenatal period,with severe polyhydramnios.The initial diagnosis was made based on amniotic fluid chloride levels and later confirmed by performing a genetic test.Genetic testing is important for confirming diagnosis and prognostication regarding the condition.

Hydrologic performance of bioretention systems is significantly influenced by the media composition and underdrain configuration. This research measured hydrologic performance of column-scale bioretention systems during a synthetic design storm of 25.9 mm, assuming a system area：catchment area ratio of 5%. The laboratory experiments involved two different engineered media and two different drainage configurations. Results show that the two engineered mediawith different sand aggregates were able to retain about 36% of the inflow volume with tree drainage conlaguratlon. However, the medium with marine sand is better at delaying the occurrence of drainage than the one with pumice sand, denoting the better detention ability of the former. For both engineered media, an underdrain configuration with internal water storage （IWS） zone lowered drainage volume and peak drainage rate as well as delayed the occurrence of drainage and peak drainage rate, as compared to a free drainage configuration. The USEPA SWMM v5.1.11 model was applied for the tree drainage configuration case, and there is a reasonable fit between observed and modeled drainag.e-rates when media-specific characteristics are available. For the IWS drainage configuration case, air entrapment was observed to occur in the engineered medium with manne sand. F^lhng ot an IWS zone is most likely to be influenced by many factors, such as the structure of the bioretention system, medium physical and hydraulic properties, and inflow characteristics. More research is needed on the analysis and modeling of hydrologic process in bioretention with IWS drainage configuration.
