Influence of Particle Size Distribution of Bimodal Reactive Alumina on Properties of LCC Refractory Castables

The effect of particle size distribution of alumina has been investigated for silica-free tabular alumina low cement castables（ LCC）. Three different combinations of alumina have been included in the matrix formulation of the castables. All the three combinations are composed of a bimodal reactive alumina and a fine ground monomodal reactive alumina. The first A1 and second A2 combinations are respectively composed of bimodal and monomodal aluminas from Alteo,with a different fine /coarse particles ratio for the bimodal alumina. The two Alteo combinations have been compared with a third combination C composed of a bimodal commercially available grade and a monomodal commercially available grade. Optimization of particle size packing has been performed for the three different formulations using the Dinger and Funk model. With this optimization,the two formulations based on Alteo material（ PFR,PBR and PFR40） achieve the same level of performance in applicative tests（ flowability,cold physical properties,mechanical resistance,crystalline phases,thermal shocks and corrosion） as reference solutions on the market.

The synthesis of mixed alcohols (C1-C5) from syngas has been studied at 6. 0 MPa over modified Co/CuLaZr catalysts. The molybdenum addition enhanced greatly the activity and the selectivity to alcohols. The improvement of hydrogenation capacity of the system via a reversible spillover effect of hydrogen could explain this effect, together with a great capacity of CO insertion, illustrated by the effect of C2H4 addition as a probe to syngas. Under our experimental conditions, a mixed alcohol production of 147.1g/kg. cat/h containing a proportion of 33. 1% of higher alcohols (C2+OH) was obtained with a selectivity to ROH of 52. 8%.

ZrO2 in different structures and CexZr4-xO8 solid solutions have been prepared by a sol-gel related method with propionic acid as the solvent. The results of their characterization and CO hydro-genation performance evaluation show that t-ZrO2 has better catalytic performance for CO hydrogenation to hydrocarbon than m-ZrO2. Cerium (Ⅲ) acetate and zirconium (Ⅳ) acetylacetonate have been chosen as the most suitable starting materials for CexZr4-xO8 solid solution preparation. Ce-Zr reducibility properties are increased by the incorporation of zirconium oxide in the ceria structure. Ce2Zr2O8 exhibits a higher activity, lower methane selectivity and higher iso-C4 selectivity than tetragonal ZrO2. This implies that the formation mechanism of C4 hydrocarbons, especially that for the iso-C4 fraction is different over Ce2Zr2O8 and t-ZrO2.

The CO + H2reaction was studied under a pressure or 6MPa overCo/CuLaZr catalysts prepared by impregnation method. The C2+OH formationincreased with the cobalt percentage, caused probably by the augmentation ofthe number of the Co-Cu bisites, and the C2+HC formation increased simulta-neously, explained by common reactional intermediates. It was indicated thatthere was an interaction between CuO and CoOxwithin the Co/CuLaZr cata-lyst. The results of C2H4addition to syngas show that the addition of Co ontoCuLaZr leads to an augmentation of CO insertion and a diminution of the hy-drogenation capacity of the system.

Hydrogenation of carbon monoxide has been studied under 15 MPaon modified Co-Cu-Y catalysts. Molybdenium was very effective for promotingcatalytic activity, and the synergistic presence of Co, Cu and Mo was necessaryfor the good catalytic performance in the synthesis of higher alcohols C2+*** our experimental conditions, a yield of 175 g/kg cat/h of mixed alcohols（C1-C5） was obtained with a C2+OH proportion of 45％ in weight. A stronginteraction between CuO, CoOyand MoOxin the modified catalyst was ob-served. The presence of MoOxstabilized the Y2O3structure of the catalyst duringthe syngas reaction under high pressure illustrated by the X-ray diffractiontests.
