Ecological Niche modeling uses the geographic coordinates of species presence records as the primary input to estimate potential geographic *** is little known whether carrying out rigorous data pre-processing is necessary before building niche models to be transferred to different time *** we compared the current,past,and future potential distributions projected by niche models built from two different databases,an open-access database and a database compiled ad hoc,for Handleyomys chapmani,a rodent closely associated with montane cloud forests in *** models predicted different spatial patterns of climatic suitability for the three periods *** on our current knowledge of cloud forest species in mexico,the distributions predicted by the model built from the ad hoc database are more ecologically realistic than those obtained from the open-access *** models built using the open-access database were particularly inaccurate at the limits of the geographic range,predicting larger,more diffuse distributions for the three *** conclude that pre-processing occurrence data is crucial for mountain species,as the number of localities and even minor inaccuracies in the geographic coordinates can translate into very different climatic conditions due to abrupt altitudinal ***,the predicted shifts in the potential distribution of *** over time indicate that this species is highly susceptible to climate change.

The present study describes the selection, analysis and risk assessment of genotoxic and carcinogenic ingredients of botanicals and botanical preparations which can be found in food and plant food supplements (PFS). First an inventory was made of botanical ingredients that are of possible concern for human health because of their genotoxic and/or carcinogenic properties. In total, 30 botanical ingredients were selected and subsequently judged for their actual genotoxic and/or carcinogenic potential. Among the 30 compounds considered, 18 compounds were judged to be both genotoxic and carcinogenic. Interestingly, the majority of these compounds belong to the group of alkenylbenzenes or unsaturated pyrrolizidine alkaloids. Subsequently, based on available carcinogenicity data and estimated daily human exposure that was determined focusing on the intake from PFS, the margin of Exposure (mOE) was calculated for the alkenylbenzenes estragole, methyleugenol, safrole and β-asarone. calculating the mOEs for intake estimates of these alkenylbenzenes from PFS resulted in mOE values that were generally lower than 10,000 and often lower than 100. In some cases the mOE was even below 10 meaning that the estimated daily intake is in the range of dose levels causing malignant tumors in experimental animals. This result indicates that the use of PFS containing the genotoxic carcinogens estragole, methyleugenol, safrole or β-asarone might raise a potential concern for human health and would be of high priority for risk management.

metabolic diseases are highly prevalent worldwide and have been associated with adverse clinical outcomes,including mortality,in patients developing coronavirus disease(cOVID-19).Because of the close relationship between metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity and the presence of metabolicassociated fatty liver disease(mAFLD),a high number of cases of patients affected by both mAFLD and cOVID-19 would be expected,especially in highrisk *** studies have shown an increased risk of adverse clinical outcomes,viral shedding,and deep vein thrombosis,especially in patients with mAFLD-related liver *** predisposition to poor outcomes and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection in patients with mAFLD could be secondary to mechanisms common to both,including preexisting systemic chronic inflammation,endothelial dysfunction,and involvement of the renin-angiotensin *** of the increased risk of adverse outcomes,mAFLD should be screened in all patients admitted for *** computed tomography scans could be of help,assessment of liver fibrosis is also recommended,favoring noninvasive methods to limit the exposure of healthcare *** involvement in this population ranges from abnormalities in liver chemistry to hepatic steatosis in postmortem ***,preventive measures should be strongly advocated in patients already known to have mAFLD,including the use of telemedicine and vaccination in addition to general measures.

Individualized cancer treatment(*** therapy) based on molecular alterations has emerged as an important strategy to improve the current standardof-care chemotherapy.A large number of studies have demonstrated the importance of biomarkers not only in predicting prognosis but more importantly in predicting the response towards *** example,amplification or mutation status of the two biomarkers HER2(human epidermal growth factor 2) and BRcA(breast cancer) can be used to decide on a specific targeted therapy in breast ***,no biomarkers with a similar clinical impact have been identified in pancreatic ductal *** many genome-wide and proteome-based high-throughput studies have identified candidate genes or proteins as promising biomarkers,none of them were eventually transferred into the clinical ***,the most reliable markers for predicting prognosis are still the tumor stage and grade and biomarkers for therapy response remain *** reason lies in the lack of systemic approaches to analyze the complexity of dominating cancer pathways and the impact of such signal complexity on prognosis and therapy response.

Introduction: Human immunodeficiency virus infec- tion is associated with several different types of peripheral neuropathy: distal predominantly sensory axonal polyneuropathy, like Guillain Barre syndrome. case presentation: A 55-year-old caucasian woman with Human immunodeficiency virus infection, diag- nosed with Guillain Barre syndrome was studied. Serum and cSF immunoglobulin G and Albumin levels were quantified by using an immunodiffusion technique. She had preceding viral symptoms. The clinical diagnosis of the illness in this patient was pa-resthesias or sensory loss, tendon reflexes. It was also observed cranial nerves abnormalities, acute mo- tor and sensory axonal neuropathy and ophthalmoplegia. The mean cD4 count was 367/mm3, cSF white blood cell 25 wbc/mm3. The serum sodium concentration was significantly low (133 mmol/L). She had a respiratory compromise as a result of their neuropa- thy and developed congestive heart failure and hy- potension and died of a cardiac arrest. The neuro-immunological response described by our patient was a blood/cSF barrier dysfunction without IgG intra-thecal synthesis. conclusion: There is no doubt that this study is of great importance because will help clinicians increase their knowledge of the immune response in patients with this autoimmune disorder on the basis of this case report, in which, for first time, could be seen the neuroimmunological response through the reibergram in a patient with HIV- asso-ciated Guillain-Barre syndrome.

Investigating amyloid nanofibril self-assembly, with an emphasis on the electromechanical property of amyloid peptides, namely, piezoelectricity, may have several important implications: 1) the self-assembly process can hinder the biological stability and give rise to the formation of amyloid structures associated with neurodegenerative diseases;2) investigations in this field may lead to an improved understanding of high-performance, functional biological nanomaterials, 3) new technologies could be established based on peptide self-assembly and the resultant functional properties, e.g., in the creation of a piezoelectric device formed with vertical diphenylalanine peptide tubes as a piezoelectric biosensor, and 4) new knowledge can be generated about neurodegenerative disorders, potentially yielding new therapies. Therefore, in this review, we will present the current investigations associated with self-assembly of amyloid-beta, the mechanisms that generate new structures, as well as theoretical calculations exploring the functionality of the structures under physiological pressure and electric field.

cannabidiol (cBD), one of the most studied phytocannabinoids, is non-psychotropic and can induce protective effects on the central nervous system against acute and chronic brain injury. Interestingly, cBD inhibits processes relating to amyloid beta (Aβ)-induced neurotoxicity in mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease, though the detailed molecular mechanism underlying the cBD neurotoxicity modulation is not fully understood. In this study, using atomic force microscopy, we find that cBD promotes the aggregation of Aβ peptides, enhancing the formation of Aβ oligomers, also known as Aβ-derived diffusible ligands (ADDLs). The cBD-mediated sequestration of Aβ monomers in soluble ADDLs could reduce neurotoxicity. This study highlights a possible role of cBD in modulating the formation of ADDL aggregates and provides insight into potentially neuroprotective properties of cBD in Alzheimer’s disease.

Skeletons of 3D Surfaces Based on the Laplace-Beltrami Operator Eigenfunctions

In this work we describe the algorithms to construct the skeletons, simplified 1D representations for a 3D surface depicted by a mesh of points, given the respective eigenfunctions of the Discrete Laplace-Beltrami Operator (LBO). These functions are isometry invariant, so they are independent of the object’s representation including parameterization, spatial position and orientation. Several works have shown that these eigenfunctions provide topological and geometrical information of the surfaces of interest [1] [2]. We propose to make use of that information for the construction of a set of skeletons, associated to each eigenfunction, which can be used as a fingerprint for the surface of interest. The main goal is to develop a classification system based on these skeletons, instead of the surfaces, for the analysis of medical images, for instance.
