AIM: To determine if gene-specific DnA methylation in prospectively collected blood samples is associated with later development of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).METHODS: Comparing genome-wide DnA methylation profiles using Illumina Human methylation 450 K arrays, we previously identified a list of loci that were differentially methylated between tumor and adjacent nontumor tissues. To examine if dysregulation of DnAmethylation patterns observed in tumor tissues can be detected in white blood cell(WBC) DnA, we conducted a prospective case-control study nested within a community-based cancer screening cohort in Taiwan with 16 years of follow up. We measured methylation levels in ninety-six loci that were aberrant in DnA methylation in HCC tumor tissues compared to adjacent tissues. Baseline WBC DnA from 159 HCC cases and 312 matched controls were bisulfite treated and assayed by Illumina Bead Array. We used the χ2 test for categorical variables and student's t-test for continuous variables to assess the difference in selected characteristics between cases and controls. To estimate associations with HCC risk, we used conditional logistic regression models stratified on the matching factors to calculate odds ratios(OR) and 95%CI. RESULTS: We found that high methylation level in cg10272601 in WnK2 was associated with increased risk of HCC, with an OR of 1.91(95%CI: 1.27-2.86). High methylation levels in both cg12680131 in TPO and cg22511877 in MYT1 L, however, were associated with decreased risk. The ORs(95%CI) were 0.59(0.39-0.87) and 0.50(0.33-0.77), respectively, for those with methylation levels of cg12680131 and cg22511877 above the median compared with those with levels below the median. These associations were still statistically significant in multivariable conditional logistic regression models after adjusting for hepatitis B virus infection and alcohol consumption. Sulfonylurea receptor(SUR) belongs to the adenosine 5′-triphosphate(ATP)-binding cassette(ABC) transporter family;however,SUR is associated with ion channels and acts as a regulatory subunit determining the opening or closing of the ***8 and Abcc9 genes code for the proteins SUR1 and SUR2,*** SUR1 transcript encodes a protein of 1582 amino acids with a mass around 140–177 k Da expressed in the pancreas,brain,heart,and other *** is well known that SUR1 assembles with Kir6.2 and TRPM4 to establish K_(ATP) channels and non-selective cation channels,***8 and 9 are alternatively spliced,and the resulting transcripts encode different isoforms of SUR1 and SUR2,which have been detected by different experimental ***,the use of binding assays to sulfonylureas and Western blotting has allowed the detection of shorter forms of SUR(-65 k Da).Identity of the SUR1 variants has not been clarified,and some authors have suggested that the shorter forms are ***,immunoprecipitation assays have shown that SUR2 short forms are part of a functional channel even coexisting with the typical forms of the receptor in the *** evidence confirms that the structure of the short forms of the SURs is fully functional and does not lose the ability to interact with the *** structural changes in short forms of SUR modify its affinity to ATP,regulation of its expression might represent an advantage in pathologies where ATP concentrations decrease and a therapeutic target to induce ***,the expression of SUR1 variants might be induced by conditions associated to the decrease of energetic substrates in the brain(*** stroke and epilepsy).In this review,we want to contribute to the knowledge of SUR1 complexity by analyzing evidence that shows the existence of short SUR1 variants and its possible implications in brain function.

Leaching kinetics in cyanide media of Ag contained in the industrial mining-metallurgical wastes in the state of Hidalgo, Mexico

The leaching kinetics in cyanide media of the silver contained in the Dos Carlos waste tailings at the City of Pachuca de Soto, Hidalgo State, Mexico were carried out. The used material contained the following chemical composition: 56 10-6of Ag, 0.6 10 6of Au and 70.43%(by weight) of SiO2; 7.032%(by weight) of Al2O3; 2.69%(by weight) of Fe; 0.46%(by weight) of Mn; 3.98%(by weight) of K2O; 3.34%(by weight) of CaO; 2.50%(by weight) of na2O; 0.04%(by weight) of Zn; 0.026%(by weight) of Pb. The mineralogical phases present were the following: Silica, albite, argentite, berlinite, orthoclase, potassium jarosite, and natrojarosite. In the leaching kinetics in cyanide media, and under the studied conditions,the effect of the Cn concentration on the reaction rate has no effect on the whole process of alkaline cyanidation, of which the reaction order is n 0. Temperature has an effect on the cyanidation rate of the reaction, with an activation energy of 47.9 KJ/mol. At the same time, when the particle size decreases there is an increase in the reaction rate, which is inversely proportional to the particle diameter; when increasing the naOH concentration there is an increase in the reaction rate Kexp, with a reaction order(n) of 0.215 under the studied ranges.

A new variant of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma(iCCA)has been recognized in recent years presenting predominantly as a large hepatic mass in young woman with the characteristic expression of inhibin by *** variant iCCA was originally termed as cholangioblastic variant of iCCA,and subsequently proposed to be renamed as inhibin-positive hepatic carcinoma or solid-tubulocystic variant of iCCA to better reflect its immunohistochemical profile or morphologic *** tumor histologically is composed of small to medium sized cells with scant to moderate amount of eosinophilic cytoplasm heterogeneously organized in solid,tubular,and cystic growth *** tumor cells are positive for biliary markers,inhibin and albumin,and have a novel recurrent gene fusion,nIPBL::*** of this new iCCA variant and its clinicopathologic features will aid in the diagnostic work-up and avoid confusion with other primary and metastatic hepatic neoplasms.

Use of δ^(18)O, δ^(13)C and nO_(3)^(-) to identify hydrogeochemical processes related to contamination in an aquifer located in central Mexico

In this work,an isotopic analysis of δ^(18)O,δ^(13)C,and nO_(3)^(-) concentrations was carried out to identify the origin and the processes related to the contamination of an aquifer located in the state of Guanajuato,*** research identified the possible sources of δ^(13)C in *** groundwater flow,CO_(2) participates in different hydrogeochemical reactions in which the dissolution of carbonates or biochemical processes related to biodegradation stand *** data of δ^(13)C,δ^(18)O,and the hydrogeochemical behavior of nO_(3)^(-) and HCO_(3)^(-) in water,in addition to isotopic data and the chemical composition of limestones in the study area,were determined to establish the isotopic signature and the processes undergone by the *** isotopic signature of rock and water samples indicated that metamorphic limestones contributed with carbon dioxide to deep groundwater,while in the upper aquifer,bacterial metabolic reactions during nitrification–denitrification could modify the isotopic signature of δ^(13)C in some wells,although atmospheric contribution also plays a *** modification of the carbon isotopic component is related to the precipitation of calcite in specific regions of the study area,input of atmospheric CO_(2),and soil(*** possible participation of C4-type plants in the assimilation-release of carbon).This process is not confirmed or completely ruled out in this study since agriculture is excessively developed throughout the *** joint interpretation of isotopic values and the hydrogeochemical behavior of major and conservative elements help in identifying possible pollution processes in which different carbon sources are related.

Compelling shreds of evidence derived from both clinical and experimental research have demonstrated the crucial contribution of receptor for advanced glycation end products(RAGE)axis activation in the development of neoplasms,including gastric cancer(GC).This new actor in tumor biology plays an important role in the onset of a crucial and long-lasting inflammatory milieu,not only by supporting phenotypic changes favoring growth and dissemination of tumor cells,but also by functioning as a pattern-recognition receptor in the inflammatory response to Helicobacter pylori *** the present review,we aim to highlight how the overexpression and activation of the RAGE axis contributes to the proliferation and survival of GC cells as and their acquisition of more invasive phenotypes that promote dissemination and ***,the contribution of some single nucleotide polymorphisms in the RAGE gene as susceptibility or poor prognosis factors is also discussed.

Altitudinal seasonality as a potential driver of morphological diversification in rear-edge bird populations

Populations at the low latitude limits of a species range(rear-edge populations)are often considered more vulnerable to climate ***,their ability to track different environmental settings at a regional scale has been widely overlooked,although this may be relevant to accurately assess their adaptive capacity to cope with ongoing *** we tested whether the endemic African Chaffinch(Fringilla coelebs africana)tracks environmental changes(*** temperatures,snow cover)by rearranging their numbers between seasons(spring ***)along the altitude gradients of its northwestern African *** additionally tested whether these seasonal changes in abundance were paralleled by morphological variation,suggesting a process of population *** assessed African Chaffinch abundance in tree covered farmland and woodland sites distributed along an altitude gradient in spring and *** addition,we captured and measured chaffinches within the study gradient to explore the patterns of morphological *** results showed that chaffinches shifted to lowlands from snow covered highlands during *** addition,highland individuals showed longer and more concave wings than their lowland *** morphological traits are usually related to flight efficiency in migratory birds,which suggest the presence of altitudinal movements aimed to track the environmental seasonality caused by *** results suggest a potential role of altitudinal seasonality as a driver of regional diversification within the African Chaffinch populations,which could be occurring in other north African avian species giv.n their relatively high endemicity in the *** evolutionary and conservation implications of these displacements have been often overlooked despite they can shape the adaptive capacity of rear-edge bird populations to face the ongoing environmental changes in this peripheral area of the Palearctic.
