Case report of a 23-year-old male patient with a pancreatic pseudocyst, initially was treated by the Interventional Radiology service by placing percutaneous drainage with poor evolution, abruptly presented abdominal pain, Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome and peritoneal irritation, so an urgent exploratory laparotomy was performed with a finding of rupture of the pancreatic pseudocyst into the abdominal cavity. He presented septic shock and died in the immediate postoperative period. Computerized Axial Tomography represents the ideal diagnostic method. Spontaneous rupture is extremely rare and requires urgent surgical intervention.

Objective: The objective is to compare a regular ovitrap versus an innovated larvitrap for monitoring Aedes spp. populations. Materials and Methods: A total of 20 regular ovitraps and 20 innovated larvitraps were placed in pairs in 20 houses from the 5 de Febrero neighborhood in Tapachula, Chiapas, Mexico. The innovation consisted in the incorporation of a valve in the lower part of a half tire to drain the contents in a 2 L collection container. The evaluation was carried out during five weeks, collecting eggs and larvae from the ovitraps and innovated larvitraps, respectively. Positivity indexes and insectary production of adult Aedes spp. mosquitoes were compared by collection type. Results: Average positivity index for the five weeks period were 60% for ovitraps and 91.25% for innovated larvitraps. During the five weeks, 4043 Ae. aegypti and 703 Ae. albopictus adult mosquitoes were produced in the insectary from the eggs collected from ovitraps, while from innovated larvitraps were 9014 Ae. aegypti, 1205 Ae. albopictus, and 15 Culex spp. Conclusion: Collection by the innovated larvitrap was more efficient, collecting 3.56 times more Ae. aegypti than with ovitraps, using approximately the same effort in time for replacing the filter paper from traditional 1 L ovitraps. Since the logistics for the storage and placement of larvitraps may still be a disadvantage in comparison with ovitraps, their use could be specifically intended in sentinel sites for mosquito population monitoring for entomological surveillance purposes.

AIM To summarize the current evidence on psychological issues in thoracic aortic disease(TAD) and infective endocarditis(IE) setting. METHODS We performed a narrative review about psychological issues in adults with IE and TAD. Through the electronic databases, Pub Med and Psyc INFO, we searched full manuscripts in English and published until September 1, 2014. RESULTS We found sixteen studies exploring psychological issues in patients with IE(six studies) and in TAD(ten papers). Psychological issues assessed were quality of life, depression, anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder. Quality of life was explored in IE(four papers) and in TAD(eight papers). Depression and anxiety were analyzed in TAD only(five papers). Post-traumatic stress disorder was assessed in IE(one study). Quality of life was found impaired in three of four studies about IE and in three of eight studies about TAD. Posttraumatic stress disorder was present in 11% and was associated with lower levels of quality of life in IE patients. In TAD patients, anxiety and depression levels after different invasive interventions did not differ. CONCLUSION Sixteen studies report about psychological issues in IE and TAD. Most of them explore quality of life and to a less extent anxiety and depression.

Early Detection of <i>Cercospora</i>Species in Soybean Plants: Immunologic and Molecular Methods

Late-cycle diseases (LCD) cause a significant deterioration in quality and reduce yields in soybean crops. In Argentina, in particular, leaf blight and purple seed stain, caused by the agent Cercospora kikuchii, and frog eye spot, caused by C. sojina, are the prevailing sources of diseases. The early, rapid and accurate detection of these phytopathogens becomes essential, and would contribute to preserving both the environment and the health of humans and animals by preventing the wasteful or improper use of chemicals such as pesticides. In order to detect Cercospora species in soybean plants at an early stage, immunochemical and molecular techniques were developed in this work. Strains from the NITE Biological Resource Center collection (Japan): Cercospora kikuchii NBRC 6711 and Cercospora sojina NBRC 6715 and regional isolates of C. kikuchii were used. To develop Dot-Blot and PCR techniques, experiments with plants undergoing different treatments were carried out: those experimentally inoculated with these fungi, those treated with sterile water and healthy plants as well. Both techniques allowed the detection, at early stages, of Cercospora species involved in two of the most frequent LCD in the country, when the cercosporin concentration produced by the fungus was higher than 3.93 ± 0.39 nmol·cyl-1 ±SD. The sensitivity between both techniques was very different. While Dot-Blot allowed the detection of the disease 4 days after inoculation, PCR detected it after 4 hours, even without visible symptoms of the disease.

The Evaluation of Refrigerated and Frozen Osteochondral Allografts in the Knee

Between 1998 and 2002, 25 patients who were treated with a refrigerated or frozen allograft were evaluated. The mean patient age was 48 years. The mean lesion size was 4.5 cm2. Validated outcome instruments [Knee Society Score, Western Ontario and McMaster University Score] were used. Clinical and radiographic evaluations were performed pre-operatively and at the most recent follow-up. Histological and electron microscopic analysis was performed on grafts prior to implantation. Clinical follow-up averaged 46 months (range 24 - 60 months). The Western Ontario and McMaster University Score improved from 46 + 24 to 66 + 22 (p = 0.003). The Knee Society Score improved from 104 + 43 to 132 + 42 (p = 0.01). No correlation was noted between graft type and histological or electron microscopy scoring. Post-operative mechanical alignment was not correlated with an improvement in Western Ontario and McMaster University Score (p = 0.19) or Knee Society Score (0.27). Six patients (24%), all refrigerated allografts, were failures and underwent knee arthroplasty. Seventy-six percent of implanted frozen and refrigerated osteochondral allografts are in place 4 years after surgery. Frozen allografts appear to be surviving as well as refrigerated grafts. The use of magnetic resonance imaging may enable the evaluation of graft incorporation and articular cartilage integrity.

Background: Despite the physical and chemical effort to control Aedes aegypti, the arboviruses transmission in the south of Mexico remains latent. Trying to improve the methods of entomological surveillance routinely used, whether the estimation of resistance to insecticides used for its control, as well as their enzyme mechanisms, were influenced by the phase in which the mosquitoes were collected through three different collection methods was investigated. Materials and Methods: Mosquito collections from the “5 de Febrero” neighborhood in Tapachula, Mexico were obtained by ovitraps, larvitraps, and a CDC backpack aspirator. Insecticide resistance of F1 females was determined by WHO diagnostic doses and resistance ratios (RR50), furthermore, levels of insecticide metabolism enzymes were determined by biochemical assays. Results: Overall, in mosquitoes collected by ovitraps, larvitraps, and CDC backpack aspirator respectively, the low mortalities obtained with the discriminant dose to Malathion (27.57%, 26.97%, and 26.91%), and to Bendiocarb (50.5%, 45.36%, and 54.97%) suggest resistance. However, LC50 for Malathion (0.922, 0.934, and 0.915) and for Bendiocarb (0.112, 0.109, and 0.107);and the low resistance ratios (RR50) for Malathion (3.34, 3.29, and 3.27) and for Bendiocarb (2.15, 2.1, and 2.06) does not suggest resistance. Although a slight numerical variation is observed between the three LC50 values, the overlap observed between their confidence intervals allows us to assume that there were no differences between the three methods. Retinal and optic nerve diseases are degenerative ocular pathologies which lead to irreversible visual loss. Since the advanced therapies availability, cell-based therapies offer a new all-encompassing approach. Advances in the knowledge of neuroprotection, immunomodulation and regenerative properties of mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs) have been obtained by several preclinical studies of various neurodegenerative diseases. It has provided the opportunity to perform the translation of this knowledge to prospective treatment approaches for clinical practice. Since 2008, several first steps projecting new treatment approaches, have been taken regarding the use of cell therapy in patients with neurodegenerative pathologies of optic nerve and retina. Most of the clinical trials using MSCs are in Ⅰ/Ⅱ phase, recruiting patients or ongoing, and they have as main objective the safety assessment of MSCs using various routes of administration. However, it is important to recognize that, there is still a long way to go to reach clinical trials phase Ⅲ-Ⅳ. Hence, it is necessary to continue preclinical and clinical studies to improve this new therapeutic tool. This paper reviews the latest progress of MSCs in human clinical trials for retinal and optic nerve diseases.
