Association between Subjective Evaluation of Skin Toxicities and Quality of Life in Patients with Lung Cancer Undergoing Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor-Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor Treatment: A Pilot Study for Developing Skin Toxicity Assessment

Purposes: Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) exert satisfactory therapeutic effects in lung cancer patients. However, the resultant skin toxicity can deteriorate patients’ quality of life (QoL). Differences exist in skin toxicity evaluation between patients and clinicians. We aimed to clarify the association between the subjective evaluation of skin toxicities and QoL in lung cancer patients and to establish a document of scale development in the subjective evaluation of skin toxicity. Methods: We used self-administered questionnaires to evaluate 12 lung cancer patients receiving EGFR-TKI treatment. Indices of QoL were generated using the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Lung and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and a subjective evaluation questionnaire concerning skin toxicity was completed. The data were collected immediately before treatment initiation and at 4 weeks post treatment. Results: In the subjective evaluation of skin toxicity, four patients (33.3%) were classified as ≥Grade 2 (painful group), experiencing painful pruritus at the emergence site of the skin rash or xerosis. In this group, the QoL scores of physical and emotional aspects declined after treatment. Conversely, patients in the painless group (Grade 0 - 1) demonstrated an improved emotional QoL following treatment (p = 0.028). Conclusions: Lung cancer patients suffering from painful skin toxicity tended to show a decline in the physical and emotional aspects of QoL following EGFR-TKI treatment. The skin toxicity questionnaire was useful from the point of view of a subjective evaluation and could be a powerful assessment tool in future clinical settings with further modification.

Ubiquitous expression of Sry induces embryonic lethality related to suppression of Tie2/Tek expression

Sry (sex-determining region on the Y chromosome) is a mammalian sex-determining gene on the Y chromosome. In mice, the transient expression of Sry in supporting cell precursor cells between 10.5 and 12.5 days post-coitus (dpc) triggers the differentiation of Sertoli cells from granulosa cells. The importance of the strict regulation of Sry expression remains unknown. Thus, we attempted to produce a Sry ubiquitous-expressing transgenic (Tg) mouse in which foreign Sry is driven by the CAG (cytomegalovirus immediate-early enhancer, chicken beta-actin promoter, and the fusion intron of chicken beta-actin and rabbit beta-globin)-Sry gene for ubiquitous expressing Sry. A low rate (2/127) of Tg pups was observed, whereas the rate of early-stage transgenic embryos before birth was 19.2% (5/26). The Sry ubiquitous-expressing embryos showed abnormal development. The results suggest that ubiquitous expression of Sry exerts a negative effect on embryonic development. One of the two adult Tg mice showed low levels of Sry expression. The other Tg mouse showed high Sry transgene expression, but was mosaic for the transgene. Developmental analysis of transgenic F1 embryos produced from the mosaic Tg mouse revealed that ubiquitous expression of Sry had a lethal effect on embryonic development around 12.5 dpc. The histological data indicated that ubiquitous expression of Sry induced abnormal cardiovascular development, resulting in embryonic death. Enhanced expression of Sry suppressed endogenous Tie2/Tek (tyrosine kinase with Ig and EGF homology domains 2/tunica interna endothelial cell kinase) expression in Sry-transfected primary cultured cells from wild type embryonic hearts. The results indicate that the tissue-specific and stage-specific expression of Sry is essential for normal embryogenesis.

The growth of prostate cancer is sensitive to androgen, and hormonal therapy has been used for treatment of ad-vanced cancer. About 80% of prostate cancers initially respond to hormonal therapy, howerver, more than half of the re-sponders gradually become resistant to this therapy. Changes in tumors from an androgen-responsive to an androgen-unre-sponsive state have been widely discussed. Since androgen action is mediated by androgen receptor (AR), abnormalitiesof AR is believed to play an important role of the loss of androgen responsiveness in prostate cancer. Surface Emitting THz Wave Parametrical Oscillator Using MgO：LiNbO3

Room-temperature operation terahertz （THz） wave source is demonstrated using three MgO：LiNbO3 crystals which have a noncollinear arrangement. The experimental results show that the THz wave can be tunable from 0.8 THz to 3.0 THz, and the peak energy output is 103 pJ/pulse at 1.5 THz. The noncoilinear cavity configuration makes the THz beam have Gaussian-like spatial distribution, small divergence angle, perpendicularly eradiated from the crystal surface. The beam quality factor M2 is measured to be Mx^2 = 1.15, Mx^2 = 1.25 for characterizing the THz wave beam. Experiments also show that the THz beam can be focused by using a polyethylene lens, and the focal spot size is close to the diffraction limit.

Precision flat surfaces finished by hand-scraping are extensively used in the sliding parts of precision positioning systems or the surface plates of precision measuring *** hand-scraped surfaces are employed to improve the flatness of the machined surfaces and the motion accuracy of the *** numerous depressions of micrometer-scale depth on a scraped surface are thought to prevent wringing and improve the lubrication properties by forming oil *** measurement of the micrometer-scale features of a hand-scraped surface is one of the reasonable methods for investigating its effect on the motion accuracy of the positioning systems or the lubrication properties of the sliding *** a hand-scraped surface is a rough surface composed of micrometric complex features,it is difficult to conduct precision measurement of the three-dimensional surface form using conventional measurement instruments,such as vertical-incident interferometers or stylus-type *** this study,an oblique-incident interferometer based on Abramson interferometry is introduced to measure the form of a rough surface produced by *** this technique can detect high-intensity reflected light on a rough surface,it allows the measurement of the form of the hand-scraped surface in noncontact *** order to shorten the measurement time,the form calculation based on a five-step phase shifting method was introduced.

Aortic stenosis(AS)is the most common valvular disease in the older adults'population,and its prevalence will likely continue to increase with the aging society.[1]Surgical aortic valve replacement(SAVR)for elderly patients is known as a high-risk procedure.[2-4]Transcatheter aortic valve implantation(TAVI)is a reasonable alternative to SAVR for older and inoperable patients with AS,and TAVI significantly improves outcomes in elderly patients with severe AS and serious comorbidities,[5,6]TAVI achieves a 20%relative reduction in mortality compared with SAVR.

Recent advances of high-pressure generation in a multianvil apparatus using sintered diamond anvils

The tried and tested multianvil apparatus has been widely used for high-pressure and hightemperature experimental studies in Earth science. As a result, many important results have been obtained for a better understanding of the components, structure and evolution of the Earth. Due to the strength limi- tation of materials, the attainable multianvil pressure is generally limited to about 30 GPa （corresponding to about 900 km of the depth in the Earth） when tungsten carbide cubes are adopted as second-stage anvils. Compared with tungsten carbide, the sintered diamond is a much harder material. The sintered diamond cubes were introduced as second-stage anvils in a 6--8 type multianvil apparatus in the 1980s, which largely enhanced the capacity of pressure generation in a large volume press. With the development of material synthesis and processing techniques, a large sintered diamond cube （14 ram） is now available. Recently, maximum attainable pressures reaching higher than 90 GPa （corresponding to about 2700 km of the depth in the Earth） have been generated at room temperature by adopting 14-mm sintered diamond anvils. Using this technique, a few researches have been carried out by the quenched method or combined with synchrotron radiation in situ observation. In this paper we review the properties of sintered diamond and the evolu- tion of pressure generation using sintered diamond anvils. As-yet unsolved problems and perspectives for uses in Earth Science are also discussed.
