In Brazil,schistosomiasis occurrence is related to the presence of the etiological agent Schistosoma *** presence of mollusks for Biomphalaria genus is a necessary condition for development of the parasite *** Parástate,the species ***,***,*** and *** have already been identified,with reports of the last two occurring in Belé*** aim of this study was to determine the spatial distribution of Biomphalaria species in Belém,Pará,Brazil,identifying risk areas for schistosomiasis *** malacological surveys were carried out between September 2013 and October 2017 in 35 neighborhoods of Belé*** collection points were georeferenced using a Global Positioning System(GPS)receiver and the Kernel Density Estimation(KDE)was used to the spatial *** mollusks,after measurement,were exposed to light to verify the presence of *** ***,mollusks were sacrificed and fixed for dissection and morphological identification of *** surveys resulted in a total of 10,803 mollusks collected,of which 9,367(86.70%)specimens were *** the analyzed mollusks,5,820(62.14%)were identified as *** and 3,547(37.86%)as *** presence of the parasite was observed in 208(2.22%)specimens,all *** mollusks were found in six neighborhoods:Guamá(51 mollusks/24.5%),Sacramenta(47 mollusks/22.6%),Telégrafo(47 mollusks/22.6%),Terra Firme(36 mollusks/17.3%),Condor(20 mollusks/9.6%)and Barreiro(7 mollusks/3.4%).This study confirms that *** species actively participates as intermediate host in the disease maintenance in Belé*** KDE allowed to analyze the spatial distribution of collection sites and consequently to determine possible risk areas of schistosomiasis transmission in *** development of maps identifying sites with schistosomiasis positive snails may support efforts of this municipality by directing activities related to endemic disease control.

Association between IGF-2 gene and fat-free mass in response to resistance training

BACKGROUND: It is well established that the human aging process is associated with a significant decline in neuromuscular function and performance. Twin studies demonstrate that genetic factors partially explain the inter-individual variation of fat-free mass (FFm) and muscle strength. PURPOSE: To examine the association between the polymorphism of the gene IGF-2 with phenotypes strength and muscle mass of elderly women pre and post resistance training. mETHODS: 76 elderly women participated in this analysis. These volunteers, who should be sedentary for at least 6 months before the study, were assigned four groups in relation to allele GAGG, AA, GAAA and GG. The first analysis compared 60 elderly women with GG and GA allele (GAGG) versus 16 elderly women with AA allele. The second analysis compared 54 elderly women with GA and AA (GAAA) versus 22 elderly women GG allele. The Body mass index, fat free mass, fat mass and Isokinetic muscle Peak Torque were measured. All volunteers were participating in the Resistance Training program. The DNA was extracted from peripheral venous blood leukocytes using a salting out protocol. The primer for IGF-II gene exon 9 was 5’-GTCCCTGAACCAGCAAAGAG-3’ 0.5 μm (0.625 μl) Primer R-5’-TGATGGAAAAGGGAGTGAGG-3’ 0.5 μm (0.625 μl), Taq DNA Polimerase enzime 0.5 U (0.1 μl), água milli-Q (3.8 μl) 5 hg de DNA (3 μl). PCR amplification was performed in a programmable thermal cycler GeneAmp? PCR System 9700. RESULTS: The results of the first analysis GAGG × AA versus the group AA showed the relative increase in knee extensor peak torque relative and also in the fat-free mass and showed a decrease in the fat mass percentage in the GAGG group. The second analysis considered the group GAAA versus group GG showed decreases in the fat-free mass percentage in the GAAA group, also showed the relative increase in the fat-free mass in the GG group and decrease in the fat mass percentage in the GG group. Standardization of Sampling for Isolation of Exosome-Like Small-Extracellular Vesicles from Peripheral Blood from Reproductive-Aged Women

Exosome-like small-extracellular vesicles (sEVs) are extracellular vesicles that act in intercellular communication and are involved in several biologic and pathologic processes. While sEVs increase the stability of their cargo molecules, there is still a need for standardization of sampling and isolation of these microvesicles. We aimed to determine the best sampling method for isolation of sEVs from peripheral blood from reproductive-aged women. material and methods: We included samples of plasma from our biobank collected in 2014 by venipuncture in heparin tubes and stored at -80°C. We also included blood samples collected in heparin tubes and Ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) tubes and stored at -80°C for one to two weeks prior processing. All blood samples were collected from the same nine reproductive-aged female volunteers. sEVs were isolated from plasma by ultracentrifugation and filtration and indirectly quantified using Pierce BCA Protein Assay kit. Transmission electron microscopy (TEm) and Nano Tracking Analysis (NTA) were performed to confirm the isolation of sEVs. Results and Discussion: TEm and NTA confirmed the isolation of sEVs. Protein concentration of short-time stored heparin samples was not statistically different from long-time stored heparin samples (1847.2 ± 651.4 vs. 2363.2 ± 1025.1, p = 0.14). There was no difference between heparin and EDTA plasma samples recently collected (2363.2 ± 1025.1 vs. 2044.8 ± 653.2, p = 0.44). In conclusion, blood samples may be collected using heparin or EDTA for isolation of sEVs. Long-time stored plasma samples maintain sEVs integrity and may be used, especially in comparative studies.

The angiotensin receptors type 1 (AT1) have affinity by Losartan?, low affinity to non-peptides antagonists and similar effect as Angiotensin-convert-enzyme inhibitors. It have been reported that natural and synthetic products might reduce the genotoxic and cytotoxic effects related to stannous chloride (SnCl2). SnCl2 is used in nuclear medicine as a reducing agent to obtain technetium-99 m-radiopharmaceuticals. The aim of this work was to evaluate the cellular effects produced by a solution of Losartan? (25 mg/ml) on the survival of Escherichia coli AB1157 in the presence and absence of SnCl2, and on the osmotic fragility of erythrocytes of the blood of Wistar rats. Briefly, blood sample was withdrawn by Wistar rats with heparinized syringe and incubated with Losartan? solution. Saline (NaCL 0.9%) was used as a control. The samples were gently mixed with hypotonic solutions of NaCl. After that it was centrifuged and the supernadant isolated for optical determination of the hemoglobin present. E. coli AB1157 cultures (exponential growth phase) were collected by centrifugation, washed and resuspended in 0.9%NaCl. Samples were incubated in water bath shaker with: (a) SnCl2 (25 μg/ml), (b) Losartan? (25 mg/ml) and (c) SnCl2 (25 μg/ml) + Losartan? (25 mg/ml). Incubation with 0.9% NaCl was also carried out (control). At 60 min intervals, aliquots were withdrawn, diluted, spread onto Petri dishes with solid LB medium and incubated overnight. The colonies formed were counted and the survival fractions calculated. Statistical analysis was performed. The results showed that there was a significantly increase (P motic fragility of the blood cells treated with Losartan?. moreover, Losartan? was also able to protect the E. coli cultures against the lesive action of SnCl2. The study investigates the effect of spatial and temporal tree-fall gaps structure on spiders’ assemblage in an Atlantic forest fragmented area in Brazil. It was conducted in the michelin Ecological Preserve-REm (Bahia), 190 ha forest remnant. Samples were collected on leaf-litter (50 × 50 cm) at five tree-fall gaps formations (2), within five adjacent primary forest and five inner edge parcels. Siting Study of Solar Thermoelectric Plants in the State of minas Gerais

The generation of heliothermal electricity has received increasing attention throughout the world in countries such as Spain, the USA, Germany and many others. In Brazil, this type of energy generation in the form of large projects (above 80 mW) remains unexplored. However, it is known that in the country, there are extensive areas of normal direct irradiation with high intensity and a low seasonality factor, especially in the semiarid regions in Brazil, mainly the North and Northeast of minas Gerais. moreover, these minas Gerais regions have other significant characteristics for the installation of these plants: proximity to transmission lines, flatness, the fact that the respective vegetation is not endangered, a suitable land use profile (availability of land not used in agriculture), low wind speed, low population density, and, most recently, an increase in the demand for local electric energy due to the economic growth above the Brazilian average rate. Furthermore, the introduction of solar plants in that region, due to its distributed nature, will bring development and growth to the region (normally poor) by generating employment and income. This article presents a study of the optimal location of thermoelectric plants in the semiarid regions of minas Gerais, conducted with Geographical Information System (GIS) technology. GIS consists of a set of specialised resources that allow the manipulation of spatial data, bringing efficiency and agility in the identification of suitable places for the installation of solar plants, while simultaneously enabling the consideration of future scenarios for energy planning, with its respective impact, costs and benefits. The study has identified very promising solar irradiation levels for the electric generation by solar energy, whether thermoelectric or photovoltaic, reaching an annual solar irradiation of 2700 kWh/m2 in the summer and in the range of 2200 - 2400 kWh/m2 on an annual basis. The present study reports a physicochemical comparison of shade-grown and sun-grown coffee beans, under unripe, rip and roasted-ripe conditions, using electrical conductivity measurements, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). moreover, the assessed physicochemical parameters were compared with organoleptic evaluations based on the Coffee Quality Institute protocol. The values found for electrical conductivity, leached potassium, and stable free radicals were respectively 29%, 31%, and 350% higher for shade-grown coffee beans, whereas polyphenol oxidase enzymatic activity was 23% lower. By contrast, FTIR and HPLC measurements identified higher chlorogenic acid and lipid contents in sun-grown coffee beans. Importantly, the sensorial grade attributed to roasted-ripe grains was 12% higher for sun-grown coffee. Our findings suggest that shade-grown coffee beans have undergone microorganismal activity and undesired fermentation during cultivation, which resulted in lower coffee quality. A correlation between a set of selected physicochemical properties and organoleptic properties was robustly established and could be used in the development of future coffee bean quality control protocols.

Characterization of the Biological Potential of the Essential Oils from Five Species of medicinal Plants

Essential oils from mentha piperita, Cymbopogon citratus, Rosmarinus officinalis, Peumus boldus and Foeniculum vulgare were extracted by hydrodistillation, chemically characterized and quantified by GC/mS and GC/FID. The principal componentes in the essential oil of m. piperita (carvone and limonene), C. citratus (geranial, neral and myrcene), R. officinalis (1,8-cineole, camphor and α-pinene), P. boldus (α-terpinyl formate, p-cymene and 1,8-cineole) and F. vulgare (methyl chavicol, limonene and fenchone) were identified. The oils were tested for antioxidant activity employing the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl) radical-capture method, the oxidation of the β-carotene/linoleic acid system, and the ABTS radical-capture method. The essential oils were not effective. The antioxidant activities of the oils were determined by the hydroxyl method, and the highest activity (62.80%) was observed with the essential oil from m. piperita. Activities of 1.54 and 1.82 μg μg-1, respectively, were observed for the essential oils from C. citratus and P. Boldus using the phosphomolybdenum method. No activity was observed with respect to reducing power. The essential oil from C. citratus was effective in inhibiting the growth of L. monocytogenes (15.63 mg·L-1), S. choleraesuis (15.63 mg·L-1) and E. coli (31.25 mg·L-1), and the essential oil from P. boldus inhibited the growth of S. aureus (62.5 mg·L-1). No essential oil inhibited the growth of P. aeruginosa. A low antioxidant activity and a promising antibacterial activity were observed for these essential oils.

The study of earth masses requires numerical methods that provide the quantification of the safety factor without requiring detrimental assumptions. For that, equilibrium analysis can perform fast computations but require assumptions that limit its potentiality. Limit analysis does not require detrimental assumptions but are numerically demanding. This work provides a new approach that combines the advantage of both the equilibrium method and the limit analysis. The defined hybrid model allows probabilistic analysis and optimization approaches without the assumption of interslice forces. It is compared with a published case and used to perform probabilistic studies in both a homogeneous and a layered foundation. Analyses show that the shape of the density probability functions is highly relevant when computing the probability of failure, and soil elasticity hardly affects the safety of factor of the earth mass.
