Cadmium(Cd)and lead(Pb)in soil or water environment cause the ecological destruction and environmental deterioration when their contents exceed the natural background *** trace the concentrations of Cd(II)and Pb(II),a sensitive and selective electrode was developed using disposable screen-printed carbon electrode(SPE)immobilized with a composite film of reduced graphene oxide/carboxylation multi-walled carbon nanotubes/gold nanoparticle hybrid(RGO-mWNT-AuNP)throughπ-π*** highly conductive nano-composite layer,“RGO-mWNT-AuNP,”was characterized by scanning electron microscopy,UV-visible spectrometer,cyclic voltammetry,and electrochemical impedance *** wave stripping voltammetry was applied to RGO-mWNT-AuNP/SPE to electroplate bismuth film and monitor the Cd(II)and Pb(II)*** obtain high current responses,the detecting parameters were *** optimized conditions,the current responses showed a linear relationship with the concentrations of Cd(II)and Pb(II)in the range from 1.0 to 80.0μg/L with a lower detection limit of 0.7μg/L and 0.3μg/L(S/N=3),***,the prepared electrode was further employed to detect Cd(II)and Pb(II)in soil samples with good results.

Remediation of amide pesticide-polluted soils by combined solarization and ozonation treatment

Agriculture has a close relationship with nature,but it can also be the source of negative and permanent environmental *** use of pesticides in modern agriculture is a common practice,but their side effects on the environment cannot be *** this study,we evaluated a combination of solarization and ozonation techniques for the elimination of six amide pesticides(boscalid,chlorantraniliprole,cyflufenamid,fluopyram,napropamide,and propyzamide)in *** experiments were performed with four different soils to assess the efficiency of this methodology at different soil temperatures and ozone dosages under laboratory conditions,and then a greenhouse pot experiment was conducted under controlled conditions during *** days after the onset of the experiments,higher degradation percentages of amide pesticides were observed in ozonized soils than in other treated soils,particularly when ozone was applied at 10 cm soil *** results show that the utilization of ozonation,along with solarization,represents a valid method for degrading residues of the studied pesticides and suggest that this combined technology may be a promising tool for remediating pesticide-polluted soils.

The body mass index (BmI) as a public health tool to predict metabolic syndrome

Objective: To analyze the body mass index (BmI) as an indicator of metabolic alterations, including the metabolic syndrome (metS), at both individual level and public health level. method: We recruited 3683 undergraduate students (17 - 24 years old) from méxico City identifying metabolic alterations, including the metS, and comparing its prevalence by BmI ranges. We applied a sensitivity analysis to define BmI optimal cut-off point values. Results: We found 14.6% of metS prevalence with a BmI average of 24.2%, and 34.5% of overweight prevalence (BmI ≥ 25). A BmI cut-off point value of 22.5 is suggested as an upper limit of a normal weight condition, only for public health purpose;while at individual level the BmI cut-off point of 25 was corroborated as the upper limit for a normal weight condition. A public health tool to estimate the metS prevalence based on BmI percentages is proposed, and a study case is presented. Conclusion: BmI fails predicting at individual level both, healthy condition or metabolic alterations, when values are lower than 25. At population level, the BmI is a valuable public health tool to estimate metS prevalence: based on the prevalence of metS by BmI ranges of a sample of the population.

Gluten immunogenic peptide excretion detects dietary transgressions in treated celiac disease patients

BACKGROUND Life-long removal of gluten from the diet is currently the only way to manage celiac disease(CeD). Until now, no objective test has proven useful to objectively detect ingested gluten in clinical practice. Recently, tests that determine consumption of gluten by assessing excretion of gluten immunogenic peptides(GIP) in stool and urine have been developed. Their utility, in comparison with conventional dietary and analytical follow-up strategies, has not been fully *** To assess the performance of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) and point-of-care tests(PoCTs) for GIP excretion in CeD patients on gluten-free diet(GFD).mETHODS We conducted an observational, prospective, cross-sectional study in patients following a GFD for at least two years. Using the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale questionnaire, patients were classified at enrollment as asymptomatic or symptomatic. Gluten consumption was assessed twice by 3-d dietary recall and GIP excretion(by ELISA in stool and PoCTs(commercial kits for stool and urine) in two consecutive samples. These samples and dietary reports were obtained 10 day apart one from the other. Patients were encouraged to follow their usual GFD during the study *** Forty-four patients were enrolled, of which 19(43.2%) were symptomatic despite being on a GFD. Overall, 83 sets of stool and/or urine samples were *** out of 44 patients(25.0%) had at least one positive GIP test. The occurrence of at least one positive test was 32% in asymptomatic patients compared with 15.8% in symptomatic patients. GIP was concordant with dietary reports in 65.9% of cases(Cohen′s kappa: 0.317). PoCT detected dietary indiscretions. morphology and Chemical Phenotype of the Ovarian Intrinsic Neurons in Neonate and Sexually mature Reproductive Guinea Pig

Introduction: The existence of ovarian intrinsic neurons is well established. However, the morphology and chemical phenotype are not completely characterized and are even unknown for some species used in medical research. The purpose of this work was to determine the morphology and chemical phenotype of intrinsic neurons of the guinea pig ovary at two ages: neonates (0 days old) and sexually mature reproductive animals (90 days old). materials and methods: For the morphological analysis, we employed the modified Golgi-Cox impregnation technique. For the chemical phenotype, we used immunohistochemistry and the following antibodies;tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), transient receptor potential type 1 (TRPV1), neuron-specific nuclear protein (NeuN) and proto-oncogene product of the cFos gene (cFos). We also used enzyme histochemistry for NADPH-diaphorase detection. Results: The number of intrinsic neurons in the neonate ovary was low in comparison to the adult guinea pig ovary. The intrinsic neurons were located in the cortex and the ovarian medulla;some were isolated or clustered, forming ganglia, and others were interconnected and formed networks. The neurons were small, medium or large. In the cortex of neonate vs adult ovaries, the small and medium neurons comprised 23% vs 36% and 5.2% vs 11.6%, respectively. In the medulla, the percent of the same neurons was 10.1% vs 10.1% and 1.1% vs 2.2% in the neonate and adult, respectively. In both cortex and medulla m or multipolar. In the cortex, they were 12.7% vs 20.9%, 14.9% vs 24.2% and 1.1% vs 3.0%, respectively. Objective: metabolic Syndrome (metS) is the leading cause to develop type 2 diabetes worldwide. We examined associations of metS components early in life, and their use as risk factors of acquiring metS. method: We used an international definition of metS. Subjects were categorized into “Healthy”/“Not Healthy”, altered parameters are low HDL-cholesterol, large waist circumference (WC), hypertriacylglycerolemia, hypertension, and hyperglycemia, in 32 combinations (2^5) with two values (altered/not altered). metS was identified with three or more altered parameters. Results: A total of 3424 students (ages 17 - 24 years) participated in the survey, and 2475 were “Not Healthy” showing at least 1 parameter altered;from them 49.6% showed low blood HDL either alone or combined, 38.2% had altered waist circumference either alone or combined;while 18.1% showed hypertriacylglycero-lemia either alone or combined. Hypertension and hyperglycemia were the lowest in frequency. Conclusion: We propose that the binomium HDL/ Waist Circumference is the main prevalence factor to develop metS in the asymptomatic young population, followed by hypertriacylglycerolemia which together define metS;while hypertension and hyperglycemia seem to occur later in metS.

Effect of the Substitution of Sand by Rubber of Waste Tires on the mechanical Properties of Hydraulic Concrete and Exposure to Gamma Radiation

For a long time and until now, rubber is the most used material for the manufacture of tires for motor vehicles. Unfortunately, once the tire meets its life cycle, the remaining rubber cannot be recycled, so the tires are discarded in collection centers and often in clandestine dumps. This represents a serious environmental problem because, in one case, these waste tires become breeding grounds for insects and wildlife that is harmful to humans. In the second case, the tires are burned, releasing highly damaging gases into the atmosphere. On the other hand, concrete is worldwide the construction material par excellence. It is basically composed of cement, gravel and sand. mixing these three components in different proportions, their mechanical strength in compression can be increased. However, due to its fragile nature, concrete, once a crack is formed, it rapidly advances by fragmenting the material and producing its rapid collapse. In the present work, in order contribute to the care of the environment as well as to modify the fracture mode of the concrete, rubber particles obtained from waste tires were used as sand substitute in hydraulic concrete. In addition, rubber modified samples concrete were lately exposed to 70 kGy of gamma radiation in order to study the effects of this radiation on the mechanical deformation of concrete. The results showed a decrease in the mechanical properties of the concrete with rubber particles with respect to the traditional concrete itself. However, such decreases were offset by the fact that samples with rubber addition do not collapses as fast as the free rubber samples. The acquired data pave the way for research with great benefits, such as the use of recycled tires in concrete for its fracture mode modification in a beneficial way, as well as a possible decrease in the cost of concrete.

Breast cancer is the number one cause of can- cer deaths among Hispanic women in the United States, and in mexico, it recently became the primary cause of cancer deaths. This malign- nancy represents a poorly understood and un- derstudied disease in Hispanic women. The ELLA Binational Breast Cancer Study was es- tablished in 2006 as a multi-center study to as- sess patterns of breast tumor markers, clinical characteristics, and their risk factors in women of mexican descent. We describe the design and implementation of the ELLA Study and provide a risk factor comparison between women in the U.S. and those in mexico based on a sample of 765 patients (364 in the U.S. and 401 in mexico). Compared to women in mexico, U.S. women had significantly (p mean live births) and breastfeeding rates (57.5% vs. 80.5%), higher use of oral contraceptives (60.7% vs. 50.1%) and hormone replacement therapy (23.3% vs. 7.6%), and higher family history of breast cancer (15.7% vs. 9.0%). Re- sults show that differences in breast cancer risk factor patterns exist between mexico and U.S. women. We provide lessons learned from the conduct of our study. Binational studies are an important step in understanding disease pat- terns and etiology for women in both countries.
